Need help to set Kontakt to output on multiple audio channels
Hey there. I am using Kontakt with like 5 instruments instances in this project. In the past, I used to insert new Kontakt instance for each instrument, which would work as separate VST, so when I freeze, it would create one audio track. Now I have 5 instruments in one Kontakt window, I manually created MIDI tracks (so 5 MIDI tracks) on different MIDI channels and instruments receive on different MIDI channels, so I have different sounds. It playing great but I am ready to convert it to audio tracks. Kontakt outputs have only one St1 output option, so everything outs to one track. Obviously I have only one Instrument track. My understanding that if I click "Freeze", it will freeze all 5 instruments to one audio track? I need them to output on different audio tracks (hoping for 5 audio tracks). I cant remember which polugin did it, but I saw some plugin creating audio tracks automatically when freezing. Probably not Kontakt. So how do I do different outs from Kontakt? If I click on instrument output it offers either St.1 or "Create separate Output channel" options. What is the procedure to make audio tracks in Sonar from Kontakt instruments? Thank you.

OK - up at the top of your Kontakt UI window, there is a button for Output Section. Click it, and it will display the output channel defaults Kontakt sets up for you. By default, Kontakt will route each loaded instrument to the same ST1 output, as you know. What I do is to get all the desired instruments (4-5 is around the max I will put into a single Kontakt instance), into an instance of Kontakt, then I will go down to the Output Section, and there are some Batch Functions with a drop down, and one of those is to Clear all outputs and create one stereo output channel for each loaded instrument. Click on that batch function, and it will do just that. Now, while this next bit is purely for my own desire, as you see, the default is to cram parts of the Instrument Name into the name at the top of each channel, and it looks like crap to me. SOOO, I double click on each Channel Name in the output section, and rename things more sensibly, like Piano, Bass, Organ, Strings, Lead, etc.... Once the above is done, it is time to set the routing assignments for midi tracks and audio tracks to pick up the right pairings for each loaded instrument in the Kontakt instance. So, for each given instrument from the Kontakt instance, assign the Input to a stereo audio track (or pair of mono) to pick up the appropriate OUTPUT for that given instrument from the Kontakt instance. Then, make sure the associated midi track for that instrument is also pointing to the correct Kontakt instance, AND (this is important), you will need to set the Midi Output Channel for that midi track, to match the midi channel for that loaded instrument in the Kontakt instance. (Kontakt will auto-increment midi channels starting from 1, for each loaded instrument, so if you have Piano, Organ, Strings, Lead, and Bass, those will receive on midi channels 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectfully). For the midi track, you will find the parameter for setting Midi Output Channel on the channel strip for that midi track, just under the FX Bin. Completing the above for each instrument and each instance of Kontakt will have it all rocking and rolling. If you leave each midi track's midi INPUT set to omni, you will still hear the appropriate sound when you play, because as long as you have the desired instrument's midi track in focus, and the midi input set to omni, the setting of the Midi Output Channel will result in you sending the correct midi channel to the Kontakt instance, and the desired instrument will see midi data on its midi channel and produce sound, which gets sent back through the appropriate audio tracks for one big hootenanny. I hope the above helps, please let me know if you need me to take another stab at it. Bob Bone

I was thinking about you, Bob, when I was posting as you once attempted to explain it to me, but I was not ready to try. I will try your instructions later tonight, thanks. Also I am confused: when loading MULTY in Kontakt, does it require separate instance? It looks like no instruments in traditional way can be loaded when MULTY is loaded as every instrument becomes part of MULTY and not loading as instrument. Right? Thanks.

Hi Bob. I have recently become a big fan of Kontakt. Can I ask the reason that you limit the number of instruments to 4 per instance? Thanks mate:)

Because it is hard to see what is where and what is playing when and what controls what. Easier when there less instruments and you can see them few at a time.

Hi Bob, I don't know if you retyped all that info, but I have a doc in my Onedrive/Public/Sonar folder which is a copy of your Kontakt in Sonar tutorial.

vladasyn - this question comes up kind of periodically. Seth, one our former Sonar forum hosts, put a very useful step by step tutorial on YouTube. It's very helpful to answer this question. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1u6dWL-32jI

Ok, got it. It works, thank you. Also it only has 8 outs, so it only let me use 4 instruments. Didn't you say- there were different versions of Kontakt? I always open the first on my list. I have 3: c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\Kontakt 5 8out.dll c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\Kontakt 5 16out.dll c:\program files\cakewalk\vstplugins\Kontakt 5 So what is the 3rd one? Thank you.

I usually rename each of the 3 flavors of Kontakt in Plugin Manager, so that I know which one has how many outputs, when I see them presented in the list to insert to the synth rack. The reason I happen to limit my number of loaded instruments into a single Kontakt instance, is that once you get past around 6 or 7, the list of outputs during the input assignment for audio tracks starts to get jazzed up, so I just limit a single instance to around 4-6 instruments. One reason to use 1 Kontakt instance for each instrument is that you can't freeze individual instruments if they all go through the same synth (in this case, Kontakt). Sometimes I want to freeze some instruments while I'm still working on others, so one instance per instrument seems the best workflow for me.

I have 32 GB of memory so I don't have a need to freeze, but whatever works for the situation makes sense. Bob Bone
