Need some help setting up Sonar X1c to record vocals...!!!

I configured my interface and condensor mic and did some recording tests for the first time on X1c today. However, I ran across some problems:

1) When I record vocals in stereo, only the left records and the right is silent.

2) When I record in mono with the left, it records very loudly compared to when I record in stereo.

3) When I record in mono with the right, it does not record at all - I get silence.

Can someone help me figure out how to set up my system so that I can record normally?

Note: I am recording vocals, not instruments.

A mic is mono- unless it is a stereo mic, which from what you say, Im sure is not.

You need to record on the left or right, according to what channel you are plugged into.

It is silent on one side because your mic is not plugged into that input.

If you want stereo vocals, you should record 2 takes and pan them.

FYI, it is not common practice to record one vocal take  in stereo, but to each their own. That being said, to do so, you would need a stereo mic or 2 microphones plugged into separate inputs.

For some reason, my mic won't record on the right.. only the left. So should I just keep it on the left and record it like that in mono?

To add to what Lance has replied, if you are getting a hot signal when you record the Left mono, turn down the input for that channel (usually the input is adjusted with a knob on your interface or using it's software mixer.)

You are not getting a signal when you record right mono because your mic is mono and that means it outputs to just one channel, and since you get a recorded signal when you select mono left, that means you have the mic connected to a left channel input on your audio interface. If you want to record right mono, move (connect) your mic to the right input on your audio interface. For example, if you are using inputs 1 and 2 of an audio interface, input one would be left and input 2 would be right. Inputs and outputs are usually in pairs, sucha as 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6.

    Hope this helps.

    EDIT:

Oh yeah. Vocals are typically recorded in mono.

Your mic is mono - as stated above.  You don't give the interface, etc., so we have to guess what is going on.  But:

the mic has a mono signal going into whatever interface you are using.  This signal goes straight through to the stereo output which SONAR sees.  The signal from the mic comes into the left input of SONAR where it is recorded.  I'm not sure how you are doing it, but if you are recording in stereo the same signal seems to be divided between the two tracks used, which would drop the recording level of each channel by -3 to -6 dB. Hence the lower volume recorded on each channel.  When you switch to left channel only, it bumps up.

Solution.  Record a mono signal on a mono track (there is a selection for that) and get the best signal to noise you can.  Turn down the interface hardware or software mixer if the signal is too hot.  When you output the mono signal it will come out of the stereo output in both channels.

    ditto, what interface and mic?

If you set your input ont he track to just one side (left) instead of stereo, you will get a mono recording, which you will wan instead of a stereo recording .wav form with audio only on one side.
