Need some helping setting up an Audio Interface with Sonar X1
Hey guys, I was told that using my computer's native Realtek drivers was no good, so I got a hold of the M-Audio Fast Track interface. Now, I don't know anything about setting up audio hardware, so can someone guide me through the process, or lead me to a place that has instructions? I'm hoping this interface will give me some better quality sounds than my Realtek. I'm runnig Windows 7, everything 64-bit. I would prefer not to use Asio of possible, since it only permits you to use one device at a time (which can become annoying). P.S. Is there a way to save the settings that I currently have with my Realtek drivers for when I run Sonar without this interface attached? It took me a long time of tweaking to get the settings for the MME just right. Thanks in advance everyone

Honestly, once you go ASIO, you won't want to go back to MME. Are you doing lots of audio recording, using soft synths, all, none? How you are using Sonar will have lots of meaning for best set-up. Brian

I just prefer to use something else other than ASIO because I don't want to be limited to just one device. Sorry for the confusion I will basically be doing all MIDI/softsynths and voice recording. Little or no instrument recording. Almost no MIDI recording (i.e. via a keyboard). I make my MIDI songs using a seperate midi composer programs, the patch them up with samplers and synths. Like all the sample rates, driver settings, latency, etc...?

Can't you run everything through the interface and just use it's ASIO driver? J

Yes well I'm just not sure how to configure some of the driver settings, such as sampling rate, buffer size, etc in order to get rid of any stuttering and skipping during playback.

I also use the Fast track "on the road". It is very simple to configure and has enough quality to do very decent work with it. You can just leave the sample rate at 44.1 in Sonar (at least - that's enough for CD quality recordings etc.), and adjust the buffer size until you do not hear any artifacts. Somewhere between 128 to 256 should work. If you still have crackles or stuttering you can increase the buffer size. Try to keep the buffer size as low as possible to keep your latency low, but high enough to avoid crackles and/or stuttering.

But do you have to use ASIO, or can you use WDM or WASAPI? And while we're on the topic, let me ask you another question if I may. For someone who has different interfaces and switches between them (as I assume you do) is there a way to avoid having to change the settings each time you change interfaces? Or is there some way around that?

I don't think you'll hear a difference in the sound between Realtek and M-Audio if you're using soft synths. It's not primarily the sound quality that makes the internal chips bad, it's other things. Why would you need to use several soundcards at the same time? ASIO is the best driver for DAW work, WDM can be equally good. And why would you need to use different soundcards at all? Do you expect to get some differences sound-wise or what? Why make thing complicated if nothing is gained? Have you done the tutorials? It would be very recommendable, and also study the reference manual in all peace, so that you at least know where a feature/function can be found. Also, having many questions, you really should put your gear and software specs in you signature.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Well from what I've gathered, with ASIO you can't listen to music from other programs (i.e. YouTube, Windows Media Player, iTunes etc) while using Sonar. Which is why I wanted to use WDM or Wasapi. If this is not the case, I would not have a problem using ASIO... And I want to use different sound cards because I was told that using Realtek with Sonar is like tying down a race horse with shackles. I will be doing sound vocal recording later on, which is the main reason for the M-Audio Fast Track. But for now, I was thinking using the better sound card will help me get better quality over all from its drivers instead of using the MME 32-bit? And I have added the info onto my sig, thanks for the suggestion.

You can hear audio from other programs with ASIO. I do it all the time. It is hardware/driver dependent, what device are you using? I have an RME RayDAT and its drivers are excellent in that they allow this sort of thing with ease. I also have a Frontier Design Dakota and it doesn't allow this. If an ASIO app is playing through this device, nothing else will be able to play anything.
