Need to free up C Drive space

...and it looks like Command Center Downloads folder is huge.  Any reason why I couldn't move the content to another drive and delete the contents?

And what about old Sonar versions.  I'm at Platinum.  Is it safe to delete X3, X2, etc.?  I don't want to uninstall old "stuff" that came with them, though, in case I may be still using them.

Any advice?

You may either delete or move the installers. You can also configure the Command Center to use an alternate location to store/retrieve installers in the "Download Path" entry on the Paths tab on the settings page. Click the gear on the Command Center UI to access the settings page.

Removing old versions of SONAR will not return much disk space, most of the disk space used by SONAR is shared by all versions. You can get back some space by deleting the tutorials from "Cakewalk Content." Some even relocate the entire "Cakewalk Content" folder either using mklink to create a directory junction or update the registry.

yeah, I would like to thin it out, but I like VVocal..was that in X1??? there were other enhancements that apparently won't show up in Platinum if you delete the X1, X2, X3.  That would be nice to know or have listed in a forum post for future reference...
ie,
Version            Item          Is Included as part of Platinum Install?
 X1                  VVocal      no

There is a list of plug-ins bundled with SONAR going back to SONAR 8 here http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3217211

V-Vocal is unique in that it requires a minimal install of SONAR. All the other plug-ins either have their own installer (like Beatscape) or can be installed individually using the custom pick list provided by advanced install option.

BTW, if you are curious about the disk usage of a typical X series Producer installation, here is a post I made about it a while back http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3179366. I did not look at the plug-ins because they are the shared part most want to keep intact.

You'll find lists of which addons come with which Sonar version here and here.

Ah, I THOUGHT there was something like the mentioned "mklink" command.

Thanks for all the advice, and especially that--I'll research "mklink" and maybe that will work with some of the other items currently on my C drive.

Re: Need to free up C Drive space 2015/11/23 15:15:45 (permalink)
The short lesson is
1) move the folder from C to some other drive
2) Run cmd.exe as administrator and issue the command
mklink /j originalPath newPath

I have yet to find an app which does not work with it.

If you want the syntax for a specific case, ask. For example
move the "Cakewalk Content' from C: to D: then from the command line issue the command
mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content" "D:\Cakewalk Content"

Has anyone successfully been able to do this (change the path from one drive to another)?

I tried this (even opened a thread on it), but I keep getting:

---------------------------
Path Validation Error
----------------------------
Please correct the following errors:
Copying content failed, verify that you have selected a valid path and there is adequate disk space. Previous setting has been restored.
----------------------------

The drive I want the Cakewalk Content to be on has 1 TB of free space and is, of course a valid path.

The Command Center download path has nothing to do with Cakewalk Content. You may be confusing it with the the "Content Path." I have not tested changing the Content Path. Is the path you are to use on a local drive?

Yes, it's on a local/internal drive.

C: OS/Software
D: Samples
E: Sonar Projects

I'd like to have the Cakewalk Content folder (loops/sounds etc..) redirected from the C: drive to the D: drive.

(of note, the CCC download path goes correctly to the D: drive as I instructed it to)

As I mentioned above, I have not tested the Command Center entry but I did use the directory junction solution on previous hardware and it always worked.

Hi. I have my setup (via CCC and SONAR Preferences) installed to two separate SSD' s. I have done this for the best part of last year (X3). I have not used a single Windows command to make it happen (not too windows savvy, I must say)... I have not had a single crash / error with regards to placement (samples or likewise) in ages.
All the best.

I have my Cakewalk Content path on drive D.  I did NOT use mklink or hack the registry ... but I don't remember what I did do.

I'll investigate and post back.

I also remember the first time I ran CCC, it automatically discovered and populated Content Path to D:\Cakewalk Content

I thought this really should be a straight forward procedure in redirecting the file path, but this part of the CCC doesn't seem to be functioning properly.

So far, I've only tried to redirect it to my D: drive........I'll test and see if I get the same error message with my E: drive.

scook, I tried this but CMD says can not do this when file already exists...

This is true. In order for mklink to work the "C:\Cakewalk Content" must be moved not just copied to the new location before issuing the command.

C: OS/Software
D: Samples
E: Sonar Projects

As posted above, That is the right way to set up a system. This was how PC audio labs did it when I purchased a system from them.
