Neil Young cover

I've been in such a creative funk for the last year or so, one of our friends in the Coffee House Forum suggested I cover a favorite song to try to get the music machine started.
So I thought about which Neil Young song to do that hasn't been done to death and came up with "Don't Let It Bring You Down".
A quick project (and it sounds like it, too) and my singing will make Neil seem like Caruso in comparison, but it's on my web site:

www.gregfieldsmusic.embarqspace.com

The BGV is Vocaloid Miriam. I'm stll having a fit with trying to make those girls sound real.

Comments, suggestions and cash to make me stop torturing you are welcome.

You got NY's voice pretty close......  I like the guitar tone.... listening on computer speakers it's hard to clearly hear the BGV..... I can tell they are there......the overall mix sounds a bit dry and the drums sound stiff (programmed) ....aside from that, Thumbs up from me.

Good tune....... I like Neil ( I guess you can tell at times) .... my wife thinks I'm crazy for liking him.....she don't think he can sing or play...... I disagree and also think he is a prolific writer.

I like this song. Good job.

nice job Greg, those are some mean high vocals! sound isn't bad for a quick production, a little more work to make it sound a bit warmer would be handy, but has it worked? got any creative juices flowing? listening to the second song on your player now, and this is awesome! loving the guitaar work and the retro-synth is also brill! you clearly have plenty of talent!

    Greg ....
One of my favorites as well.  Done just as Neil like's it! Sounds like you've got Neil down pretty well and I'm impressed!
( I listened to your other tunes as well )

One of my first multitrack recordings were Neils "Tell Me Why" and "When you Dance". I used to sing "Southern Man", "Down by the River", "Cow Girl in the Sand", "Cinnamon Girl" and "Like a Hurricane"

    Really Nice Greg!!!

    Thanks for listening.
Yeah, Herb, the drums are programmed, and there's not much to them.

MGH, I want to record some more, was all ready to try to finish a 12-string track today, and the g-octave string broke! Again! I'm just going to have to stop being a cheapskate and start buying more than 1 set at a time from now on. Thanks!

I'm glad you liked it, ChinChen. Lorry, must be his Canadian roots peeking out.

Thanks, Tap, I think I've played most of those songs as well.
By the way, folks, American Stars And Bars is one of the best albums you'll ever hear, imo.

Hey Greg, its been a while, it seems I was waiting for this light to change........I love Neil Young and you have got the voice and the feel down so don't be afraid to punch up the vox cuz you sound cool doin' it. Good vibes all around on this one.  Just a couple tom/snare pickups here and there and it will be sweet.  I'm listening through headphones on my laptop and can't hear the BGV.  This tune takes me back to the day.....good job...........finish it up and let's hear it again..................Ron

Thanks, Ron, but I thought it was done! Seriously, I did it quick and kept the drums pretty much as it was on Neil's original, and the BGV were so synthy-sounding, even to me, that I lowered the volume so all they did was thicken that chorus a bit. Still working on humanizing that synth.

Thanks, Janet. I have something in mind for you. Want to try some Fusion?

Overall, I liked it, Greg. But I would EQ the whole thing a little brighter. It sounds a little muddy to me. Roll off some lows and bring up the mids and highs. But the instrumentation and vox are great.

Light to Change is a solid tune too, well done.

    OK.  So it's sharp?

I hope so. Just a little thing I started last week. Needs a 'real' piano player.
I should be done with it around August,
    2011.

    Thanks, Mark.
In an earlier post, someone said it could use some "warmth", so I put in the Warmth plug-in (tape sim) and there was an unnoticed check box, something like LF boost. I may re-post the first edition after some more tweaking.
    I appreciate everyone's comments.

    Hey Greg,

I din't think Neil's slightly detuned falsetto vocal style to be closely mimic'ed, but you did a very good job. Mix sounds pretty good on my speakers. Bravo and very well done!

Also, I enjoyed "On the Beach" quite a bit.
