Neosoul and Smooth jazz

So on a serious note... WHAT is it that differentiates smooth jazz from what's being called "neo-soul"? The way I see it, smooth jazz progressions tend to cycle wway more tightly around a tonal center whereas "neo-soul" might have a whole different key/scale PER-CHORD, like some subgenres of jazz. But the chords, voicings, instrumentations, and overall sound impressions/sonic imprints can oftentimes be exactly the same making them nearly indistinguishable.

What gives?

I think it's just a "labeling" term to market a genre. There are more genre's out now than there ever was and seems like everyone's just trying to be "unique". Not much different than cooking recipe's, all you have to do is add a lil' summin', and BAM you're a new Emeril.

Smooth jazz is late eighties early nineties poofy hair oversized suit jackets in solid colors like magenta and peacock blue and the crowd overclaps for everything especially the  cheap sounding korg  M1 synth solos

Neosoul is exactly the same with better synth pads and dressed down clothes made to look street and the crowd checks their phones 50% of the time and wants to the rest

<note to self> need to drop the oversized (neon blue) suit jacket as well as my orange MC Hammer pants, and put on my hipster pants/lumberjack shirt before sitting at the DAW.
