It would cost more to make the mechanics to allow a single tuning key to be moved to different machine heads, and if you lost the key....

Or you could have a square drive like on drums, then steal the drummers key when you lost yours.

Either way, it's simpler just to have tuning keys as they are.

Karyn, I respect your views however, mine are completely different.
I believe "cost" is an unknown factor to us so without that information...
Yes losing a key would mean you best have a spare battery.

I don't know about which is simpler, there isn't one like I imagine that I know of so neither
of can know for sure but I believe from what I know that my idea is not harder.

At any rate when I saw the machines two thoughts immediately came to mind.
The first was location - If they didn't have the keys the motors could easily be
mounted at either end of the guitar. Should one fail the master key could be
    used until battery change.
I imagine the battery should last a long time as surely they work on command....after
all if one bends a note....don't need that guitar trying to put back in tune.

Not only could they be mounted at either end but the "pattern" of placement could
radically change due to not having to be placed for operation of the key(s).
Which leads to head design, or no head at all.

Should one be able to use the motors for original design it would be very easy to
control the string angle leaving the bridge and also the nut.
Point being- With simple design modifications of the motors Gibson would have a part
that wouldn't be limited to one design thus creating a market to sell the motorized machines to many and many design options.
The main concern when I thought of the possibilities was the size as they appear to be
    rather large.

More than likely variations of that feature will be marketed. I'll be glad when that happens
if it hasn't already. Kind of surprised Roland hasn't already to work with the GK hexapups.

When ever I tune my Psaltry or my buddy's Hammer Dulcimer, or my niece's Harp I have to move the tuning key around.

Come to think of it I have to do it on drums to.

When will someone invent robot drum tuning hardware that responds to iPhone input from FOH?

That could actually be very useful   :-)

    best regards,

Not as useful as 17 rolls of gaffer tape pre-emptively applied I wouldn't have thought.
