New Audio Interface Suggestions

Hey everyone,

So for the LONGEST time I've been running everything through an M-Audio Ozonic, which for those that don't remember it, is a midi keyboard with 2 built in inputs and outputs. It's done great for me all these years, but I'd like to get a bigger keyboard, and as such unless I want to leave the Ozonic sitting there plugged in (which I don't) I'm gonna need a new audio interface too, so I was hoping to maybe get some suggestions.

I will never need more than 2 ins. A microphone and a guitar. I will also never need more than the outs for my monitors and 1 or 2 pairs of headphones. I don't record bands, I don't really play many live instruments, and I do almost everything in software. Speaking of which... I do probably 99% of everything I do in software... So I don't need any external features really at all. I don't adjust levels by hardware or anything. Basically one master volume is all I need. I'm not gonna touch a single other button for as long as I have it, I can almost with 100% certainty guarantee that.

SO... with that in mind, and the fact that I'm a PC guy and Sonar X3 is of course the center of everything I do... any suggestions for what would be good for me? Again I'm gonna be hooking in a midi keyboard, a guitar, and a mic, and I'm not gonna touch any hardware controls...

I've been doing a little of my own research too of course, but I figured it would be cool to get some suggestions from you guys too :-)

Thanks.

I am getting the new Steinberg UR-44 this next Tuesday.  I researched Focusrite and Presonus too.  The UR-44 has 6 in and 4 out.  The mic pres are very good.  It has 2 headphone outs that support two difference headphone mixes.  I works on PC, Macs, and iPad.  Check it out carefully against the competition.  I think this one is going to be a winner.

The Steinberg is the latest hot item.  It looks really good spec wise and is actually (unless Steiny has changed things)  a Yamaha interface - good stuff.  The focusrite is popular here for SONAR.

A sleeper is the TC konnekt - if you can use FW.  Great sound, good drivers now (tho not the lowest latency), one preamp, one line in, 2 outs, no midi.  $200.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I had a friend suggest Focusrite, and Steinberg is probably at the top of my list so far... I'll check out that TC Konnekt too. I do have one firewire port (which my Ozonic is currently using).

Any other suggestions are welcome :-)

The Steinberg listed by RimShot has Class Compliant mode which means it will also work with Linux Ubuntu Studio which can be handy.

I make some videos. This one shows how to do a physical loopback on the RME UCX to get many more equalizer nodes.

That's pretty cool. I doubt I'll use anything like that any time soon, but I always thought it would be cool one day once Chromebooks get powerful enough to dual boot one with a form of Linux to have a little portable studio option. I love Chrome OS.

I don't dual boot. I just have a USB hard drive that I use with other computers that aren't mine. I boot them up, plug in my class compliant interface and I'm recording. It's hand to be able to bring a hard drive instead of a whole PC. It also means you don't have to buy your own laptop if you have access to other peoples laptops.

Yea I was originally thinking of just going USB this time around. I don't think there's anything Firewire actually does for me any differently than a USB2.0/3.0 interface would do. But really I'm open to either way, doesn't matter.

Did you the UR-44 video of the Richton London?  I thought that was well done.  This unit is also going to work great with S1 as well as Auria on iPad.  It is so great to have 1 unit that does so many things!

I did. It's really cool, but honestly I don't do any of that stuff haha. Like I said I'm like 90+% software based in what I do. So I just need one that works and works good. But it's definitely towards the top of my list right now...

Polar,  I forgot to mention the desktop Konnekt 6 has a big-as.... ole volume knob in the middle of it.  I have the 48 w/ the remote and it works very well.  Read the SOS review on the 6 for the sound quality.  A bit old now, but it certainly hasn't gotten worse.

For a few more dollars get the 6i6. I paid $230 Can. It has a lot more going for it,  read my review.

Remember that the Scarlett 6i6 has only 2 mic inputs if that matters.

Thanks Rimshot, I'll take a look at your review... For the small amount of extra money it COULD be worth going bigger just to be safe, but honestly i don't do any live recording so I highly doubt I'd need the extra inputs. 2 is perfect for me.

I love this unit. I needed an audio interface with 2 mics/2 line in audio inputs and midi I/O. For the price and quality the 2i4 offers, this was an easy buy for me. Also, the drivers and support at Focusrite is outstanding......never had any dropouts, hums, buzzing etc....with their Win8 drivers.

But like I say, make a list of your projected needs!
If your going to buy a mixer then 2x2 is possibly not enough. You'll want rear panel line ins too.
the 2i4 doesn't have SPDIF which is super important if you find yourself with a good pre amp or even monitors with that option. I repeat- For a few extra bucks the 6i6 has way more going for it than the 2i4. The mix control software is worth the extra $30 alone.

I run 2 mixers, one analog and one digital.
I use the 3/4  in and outs to the analog mixer used for my old MIDI gear.
I use the SPDIF in/out for my digital mixer which gives me another 16 mike inputs, monitoring control and DSP efxs and compression for both monitoring and printing to tape.
I also need the MIDI ports.
And as I said a lot of people report issues with buss powered interfaces introducing noise into the system.
Make a list trust me.

Thanks Cactus, but like I said a couple times, including in the original post, I do everything 100% in software. I don't use any external hardware except a midi keyboard and on occasion, a single mic and/or a single guitar. That's why I'm looking for simplicity. And believe it or not, I won't even touch the mix control software! Haha. I work 100% in Sonar and using various VSTs every step of the way from simple idea to a fully completed, mixed and mastered song.

I actually wish I could just get an 88 key M-Audio Ozonic and keep my audio interface built into my keyboard! Haha. They just unfortunately don't make such a thing (and I understand why, an all in one is a niche thing to begin with, and I'm sure the vast majority of people with such simple needs are looking for on the go recording solutions, not a big 88 key keyboard).

There's no law against having more than one keyboard.  I sometimes find it convenient to set my 2 keyboards to different midi channels for triggering 2 instruments eliminating the need to switch back and forth.

Yea I just don't know if I could realistically fit it on my desk, even with the new big desk i'm gonna get, and I know me... If it's not on my desk directly in front of me, I'm not gonna touch it. Technically I own like 4 keyboards and I haven't touched the other 3 since I got the current one haha.

Hey polarbear,
I had a chance to check out my new UR-44 last night.  Need to keep testing it but here is the first pass bullet list:

1.  Easy to install.
2.  Mic pres are outstanding.  There is a huge difference between this and my old Zoom R24.  They are clean and quiet.
3.  dsp interface:  This controls the UR-44 inputs and outputs for live monitoring to get 0 latency.  Works very well but had an issue where the audio for the included Yamaga guitar sim became thin and high-ended for some reason.  Had to close and reopen the dsp to reset.
4.  The UR-44 worked great for DAWS and it also sounds great in Auria with my iPad.
5.  The dual headphone outs sound great but if you turn them up to 9-10, I hear white noise.  I think that is the headphone amps.
6.  Camtasia audio:  This is the first time I have been able to record video and audio from my desktop for making videos.

I have yet to test multi-mic input.

So far very happy with it.

You can always look at an online place like Sweetwater and see what is in the market place - does not mean you have to buy from there, since there may be a local store or a different on-line place also.

And firewire is not going to be as common as usb 2 or 3 anymore because no such connections on a lot of computers and USB 2 can handle 50 channels in and out for a unit or at least 48 channels type mixer, board, whatever.
