New Bad Ray UK: "Hunt"

New dance/house tune with some actual transients (you're welcome, Phillip!). Went easier on the compression as the material lent itself to a lighter touch.
Different flavor than the last one.
Hunt

My high school spanish teacher would be proud of me...
Thoughts, comments, brickbats: all welcome.

Very impressive... I liked the guitar strum loop...
The mix is really bright and shiny, with lots of punch…
    Well done...

NOW, that was different. I have two daughters, a 3 and 6 year old dancing all over the house to this tune. I give it a +1 on the mix very clean a clear tones. My daughters give it a 10, cause its easy to dance too. GREAT JOB!

    Habanero!

There is no mistake about the flavor here! Sounds good!
The mix is nice and bright, but being dance music I think I'd bring up a bit more low end punch in the kick sample.

    James,

incredible job. i really enjoyed the textures and colors and interwinding variations on theme/rhythm/melody.
My fave was at 3:05-3:32. That disonance was sweet. Mix is amazing. I'm so jealous.

    James,

This is a wild ride man! There's a mix of salsa, disco, and flamenco within this overall electronica dance club mix. This would get some play in DC clubs.

Love that disco bass line starting around 1:25 - that's cool.

    Cheers,
    Doug

cool tune. This could be mega with some really kid-friendly lyrics - i'm thinking of like the chacha song type stuff, you know 'jump to the left - to the right' - get something catchy, some pretty chicks dancing a routine - you're going platinum!

This piece has a lot of flavor in it. The only difference between what you do and I do is the instrumentation.

    Very nice

    James,

Nice colors you have going on. Would you care to share your instrumentation ( Sampled guitar? ) / output bus effects / mastering choices? I would find it interesting to see how you approached this song from the floor to the ceiling. Wait the ceilings coming off, 'cause J'Yo is in the house.

    Keep up the good work.

Thanks to all for your kind words. I should have finished the next one, "The Return Of The Bad", in a few days, so I hope you'll check that one out as well.

    Boom:

The secret to any good mix is a good mastering plug. I use Ozone 3, and it is truly the bees' knees; best $150 I think I just about ever spent. Its multi-band compressor keeps all the spectrum hot spots in check, and the exciter gives a nice shine. I use parts of Ozone usually on every bus, and of course the master. There the Loudness maximizer is fully controllable, so you can draw envelopes to keep the music kickin.

Really really good. I like the movement in the song and the small changes going on all the time. Only thing I don't quite like is the electric bass-sound but that might only be a personal thing. Maybe if you layered it with a smooth sub-sine? Also I think the snare could stay a little louder or snappier after approx 2:30 it feels to me personally that they disapear a little to much but on the other hand it makes for a great impact when they return.

    Spectacular mix.

    Thanks.

If you are talking about the disco bass at the chorus, is it that it don't "move the air" enough? Cuz a mix for a club is going to be muuuuuuch different than this one, which is meant for pc speakers.
As for the 2:30 mark, the reduction in the drum volume is due to a totally different loop, and I liked the heavy kick coming back after a few measures. Which again is not something that I would do in a real club mix.

In that case I totally agree on the bass. I to think the impact of the original loop reentering is worth the "sacrifice" of having an a little bit maybe to smooth of a sound (for my personal taste) for a few seconds as it adds to the songs macrodynamics. I really like this song
