New Bechstein Grand from ... Bechstein
But you gotta come back October 1st. "Today the manufacturer of the highly acclaimed Bechstein Pianos C. Bechstein Pianofortefabrik AG announce the establishement of C. Bechstein Digital GmbH and availability of their first DAW oriented Instrument, the C. Bechstein Digital Grand from Oct.1st, 2016. ( C. Bechstein Digital) Why a sampled Bechstein Piano?Starting the design process by questioning the concept of a sampled Grand Piano. Apart from the fact that to date a lot of sampled pianos are available to the modern musicians - but no real, authentic Bechstein yet - the concept behind the C. Bechstein Digital Grand represents a completely new and modern approach to the DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) oriented digital grand piano. All the existing solutions and concepts on the market have been completely put to the test and questioned before only the first note was recorded. This resulted in a kind of reversed process, as between the DAW and the classical grand piano the developers did not start their product design with the actual instrument, they started with analyzing what the modern music producer and musician expects from a professional grand piano for his DAW based music productions. The C. Bechstein Digital Grand user experience and its user interface now are optimized for both, the enthusiast musician and also the sound design expert. Providing easiest possible access to the C. Bechstein sound, its touch and access to the innovative Instrument parameters. Capturing that C. Bechstein Sound “In mid-19th century young C. Bechstein visited a Liszt Piano recital and witnessed the furor of the pianist breaking the grand piano gradually into pieces. From then on it was the young piano maker’s ultimate goal to create instruments that handle the full range of lyrical and dramatic melodies. It was the beginning of a fairytale like success story.” Source: The Becchsteins - A family story The acoustic role model for the software incarnation of a C. Bechstein grand is a carefully selected C. Bechstein D 282 – a concert grand that is already setting standards in terms of dynamic development and powerful sound per se. With its ability to highlight and emphasize even the most subtle melody lines through its unparalleled richness of tone colors, the D 282 belongs to the best modern concert grand pianos in the world. To extract the tonal personality of this piano a completely new recording process and workflow was needed and created. The studioBechstein spent over 3 weeks in the acclaimed Teldex Recording studio in Berlin that continues the great tradition and history of Telefunken and later Teldec Classics and their recording teams. Since its modernization in 2003 Teldex Studio Berlin is one of the biggest private recording studios in the world. The famous recording hall, the state of the art equipment - including a unique collection of vintage microphones - and the experience of the Grammy-awarded producers and engineers ensure first class productions, no matter what style of music. ( Teldex Studio Berlin) Under supervision of 3 time Grammy winning recording-engineer Tobias Lehmann each and every note of the D 282 piano was recorded in numerous variations, articulations and under perfect acoustic conditions – also utilising for the first time the M/S microphone technique, the sound engineers’ and sound designers’ method of choice for capturing acoustic instruments. Due to the different recording techniques, the software instrument excels in all kinds of musical styles. Classic arrangers will appreciate the fine, extremely nuanced recording quality of the samples. Jazz and pop musicians will like the innovative sound tools of the Digital Grand. C. Bechstein is known for their non-compromise attitude when it comes to the touch and tone experience of the acoustic instrument. Therefore, with the same effort, more than 10,000 carefully selected sample-zones were voiced individually! Both, software developers and piano makers worked hand in hand to create a large variety of presets for the Digital Grand to provide an impressive range and a natural sound for each sound setting. For this purpose, the controller ranges of the innovative GUI were programmed in a way that possible sound modulations always value “the original” - the unique character of a C. Bechstein concert grand piano remaining recognizable at all times. A different approach to sampling a grand pianoIn contrast to the common approach recording a grand piano for sampling the C. Bechstein team preferred a rather minimalistic method. Instead of recording dozens of microphone signals, which usually are mixed together at the postproduction stage much later in the process, they decided to focus on recording from just 3 classic listening positions. These were captured with only 5 microphones (24 bit/ 192 kHZ, Swiss Made Merging Technologies converters, Merging Technologies | Hapi Mic Pre & AD/DA Converter with RAVENNA AES67). An additional stereo signal capturing the direct and close “aura” of the grand piano also can be dialed in fully in phase from the software instrument. “As the focus of the instrument is the use within a DAW we decided to create this instrument with the least possible room reflexions or even reverb. This makes the C. Bechstein Digital Grand incredibly flexible for any kind of productions as the users are able to choose freely the room or reverb that suits their music and arrangements best in the mixing stage of the creation process!” Oliver Hutz, MD C. Bechstein Digital GmbH states. The sonic performance of the software instrument speaks for itself: playing with high polyphony throughout all registers, even in pianissimo each note remains clearly defined within the arrangement. Especially the M/S signal shines in detail making the individual notes tangible through the entire dynamic range. System requirementsThe C. Bechstein Digital Grand relies on Native Instruments’ proven KONTAKT sample player (available for macOS and Windows PC) as technological basis. Thus, the C. Bechstein Digital Grand is ready for use on all modern DAW systems. It also supports the Native KONTROL Standard (NKS) including Native Instruments’ innovative Light Guide technology for visualizing string-based sound shaping. AvailabilityThe C. Bechstein Digital Grand is available worldwide as of October 1st, 2016 as a download product for Windows and macOS for the price of EUR 249,-. In addition, the Digital Grand is also available on a “ready to play“ USB SSD flash drive at the price of EUR 349,-. Delivery to most countries without additional shipping costs." http://www.bechstein-digital.com

Well, looks like I'm out for now. It requires Kontakt version 5.6 and I refuse to install it until NI gets some changes made.

I wrote to them back in Sept to inquire if it did require K5.6. The reply was that it currently did, but they were going to make it compatible with K5.5.2 on the next update and they would email me when it is available. As of yet, I have not received anything back from them. I've also searched for some user reviews and I see very little about it. It does have some features I think could be very useful like separate EQ settings for different registers but it is a little pricey and the lack of user reviews leaves me skeptical. Currently, I am just happy with what I already have too much of. Also, the credit card is starting to turn from Red to Gold again. If you get it, Please report your thoughts back here.

Got it and dearly loving it, Rick. I'm on K5.6 mind you. The sound is simply marvelous. Way better than EastWest's Bechstein of course. Also love its tweakability, particularly String EQ. Some people compare this library to the omnipotent VSL grand but I simply adore that idiosyncratic Bechstein sound, for Bach, but also for rock, pop and ballads. As in Elton John, Rick Wright, Freddie Mercury and The Beatles (Hey Jude).

Thanks Rick! Tax seems to be included indeed. Bechstein Digital is like having a real one with added tweakability. Amazing sound design. And Mercury is simply the sweetest Fazioli I ever played. Freddie sitting next to you. Kudos to Wavesfactory. These are good times for sampled grands indeed. Also have a look at ImpactSoundworks Pearl for that typical Yamaha sound with very nice presets.

"Until some genius comes up with the solution for having the other 87 strings vibrating in sympathetic harmonic resonance when you strike a single key, then all we will have is yet another beautifully sampled piano, discrete, dry and disconnected from the cornucopia of musical vibration that is .... a piano." - thehightenor (Gearslutz) What I tried so uneloquently to say. In spite the flat plastiky sound prevalent in all sampled pianos, this one probably sounds the best to me. The Grand Atmo demo almost fools you, but it's probably the atmo part that's doing it. I hate over processed demos that make an instrument sound better than it really does or that hide it. Looks like it can be used with Kontakt player so you don't need to buy kontakt. However, does the player limit your kontrol of the Bechstein in a way that would make you want to buy the full kontakt version?

A testimony to keeping it simple. Over thought, over miked, over sampled pianos sound too sterile to me. How many mics do they put on a piano when recording a song?!

Interesting quote from Keyboards mag review: “First and foremost, it achieves a direct first place against all its followers (…) To-date, I wasn’t a big fan of sample libraries. That has just changed with the publication of the Bechstein “Digital Grand Library” for Kontakt. It all sounds really splendid and can also be played very authentically.“ (reviewer: Gerald Nahrgang)

Yeah. Forget win7, (see above) I finally got my win10 laptop up 'n runnin' with X1 thru SPlat 32 & 64 bit. Kontakt 5 went smoothly too so I may try this thing out. Edit: Beware 24GB download is taking 5 1/2 hrs @1.16 MB/sec. (from Germany) You'll also need to download the manual and quick start guide separately as the one in the download is German.

Very Nice! But I notice the short spread between soft and hard key strikes is rather unnerving. Is there a way to adjust key velocity in Kontakt? I'm using a non weighted synth to play it. Probably "hardwired" into the samples but the Velocity Histogram reveals this issue. I put a series of midi notes in Piano View with velocity values of 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 127. The histogram and my ears reveal a sharp rise between 100 and 110 where it almost flat lines thru 127. When playing in real time it's hard to hit a key between 100 and 110 without giving you a sharp volume increase. This is the normal playing range. Weighted keys may make a difference but I don't have such a controller to compare. [EDIT] Here's what I get: LEVEL METER RANGE 80 -32.2 4 90 -28.2 4.1 100 -24.1 5.1 <- big jump 110 -19.0 0.7 <- baby steps from here on 120 -18.3 0.2 127 -18.1

Inspite the velocity issue the sound is most likely the best out there. It easily trashes EZKeys which I just bought before this. }:-( At least it was on sale.

We'll see. Just shot 'em a note from their web page today. As they mention in the manual, there's a lot of interface overload fizzles and scratches. You really gotta play with the settings to keep 'em at bay. I also notice it works best in 44.1 mode so I'm guessing that's the sample format as well. Otherwise this thing is really awesome, ain't it? Never thought I'd say that about a piano sample. Right now I'm adding layers (string pad and "Mystic"). Total ear candy. Did they record the samples in stereo? You can hear the keys pan left to right from the players point of view when playing up the scale.
