New Beginnings
Hi, It's been a while since I was around to post - I've had a hellish time with work commitments - but here's some new music from the Purple Rhapsody one man band! The track is called New Beginnings, some of you may recognise the 2 minutes as they were previously posted as "A Dramatic Idea" - it's a bit longer now and the music is all finished. It still needs proper mastering but that'll be when the rest of the album is finished (only 2 tracks complete so far)! This is a bit of a departure from my usual style - more drama and less melody - but I hope you enjoy it! https://soundcloud.com/pu..rhapsody/new-beginnings All crits welcome - I need the sound to be as big as the arrangement! Cheers, Terry.

Terry, your playing and engineering skills are awesome, as always. This song sounds huge and epic, and you may have to write a movie to go with it. Cheers to you, and have a happy New Year!!

Love how the piano opening riff plays with the percussion. WOW. . . 1:32 nice how it becomes thick and fills the full stereo spectrum. GREAT JOB! Kev

Very dramatic stuff Terry. This sounds as though it would work really well in a film setting. The orchrestration is particularly well done. Excellent arrangement. Nice work.

Gotta bring that piano arpeggio up, Terry. Its way too quiet. I think this is a dramatic and very epic piece. I find myself saying the same thing twice tonight and that is the instrumentation is not doing it justice. I think you need a much more realistic orchestral plugin to take this to the next level. Brilliant otherwise.

Great piece! I agree with Shad that the piano arp needs to come way up. The drums also seem to be burried by the loud orchestra....perhaps tone down the orch part? I dunno...it's all subjective.

Fantastic track Terry, love the tension and release at 1:30. Beautifully arranged strings. I agree with the comments about the piano, it does get lost quite quickly.

Great choice of instruments, just the right amount, not too layered, but extremely moving piece. Love it. Daryl

Hi, Thanks to everyone for listening and commenting. Lynn - writing a film to fit the music? That's definitely the way it should be :-) Thanks for the compliments! Kev, Ken, John (blipp) - Thanks! Shad, Scott - I've had some trouble with the mix. If I push the piano up in the mix then the orchestra doesn't sound as impressive but I like the piano so it should be pulsing it's way through the whole track... I guess I need a combination of better (i.e. more expensive!) virtual instruments and more engineering/production experience. Herb, James, Daniel, Daryl - thanks! Cheers, Terry.

Surely somebody here can help you with the libs... why spend money if you do not need to?

foxwolfen Surely somebody here can help you with the libs... why spend money if you do not need to? Actually I think what I really need is to spend time properly using the CC11 subtleties in EWQL Symphonic Orchestra... anyone got some spare hours in the day they can loan me ;-) ?

This is fantastic, Terry! When you said more drama and less melody, I didn't know what to expect. But this didn't suffer at all from 'less melody.' It's so dramatic and so well arranged (well, take that from someone who doesn't really know what she's doing.) :) And yes, EWQL will do the job just fine...those darn CC11 edits and everything else it takes to make 'em sound real. Ugh. Anyway, that didn't take away from this at all for me...it's brilliant and definitely movie material. I agree with pulling the piano up in the first part. I think you can make it happen, but I don't really know how. I've seen them do it live enough that I know it can be done. Anyway, this next CD is gonna be amazing if you can ever find the time to finish it. You continue to inspire me and I enjoy your music immensely. (oh, and the timing is perfect. )

Thanks Rik and Janet. I guess the overall opinion is that it's pretty good but for it to be even better the piano needs to be more apparent in the mix. And I'll need to get my keyboard with the mod wheel out so that I can do the CC11 'live' rather than drawing it in (that never works for me). Hopefully in the process I won't completely ruin it! Thanks again, Terry.
