New Build - Tweaking input?

Have an Antec case already, so - gutting my old machine (an Athlon 2600 XP) and going bonkers. I use Sonar 7 (presently) w/softsynths, Protoshop CS3, Illustrator Also have a Q6600 build I was playing with, very similar - but for $175 more, I get the i7 with this config. I am not even multitracking anymore, so this beast is very very much overkill...just not sure exactly where.

I mean, hey. I've been limping along with this Athlon :) And I am most definitely a fan of XP Pro.

i7 920: $288
Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920

Raptor 74GB boot/program drive: $99
Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10000 RPM SATA 1.5Gb/s Hard Drive

Two 500GB Seagate 7200.12 (1 samples/illustrator and 1 audio): $119.98 (for 2)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R (TI FW): $199
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

3GB Dominator DDR3 1600: $82
CORSAIR DOMINATOR 3GB (3 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit

OCZ 700W PS: $89
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

$880

Tweaks? Changes? Better HDs/RAM or setup? Suggested cost cutting? WD Raptor really make that much of a difference? Some abhorrent stupidity I've overlooked? Or things I can add? Fans/heatsinks? Case fans? etc etc.

Also looking for the proper vid card for this - no gaming, dual display. Figured I'd check in before I click anything that I can't take back :)

Thanks guys!!!

Additional options on RAM - can get to 6GB around the same price (future proofing? Only got four slots, but yet the board only supports triple channel?....uh. Been a while since I've made a build, but. Don't get it.)

    6GB OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600, reportedly 7-7-7-24 $104 (+$20 mail-in, who knows)

And, just in case...reportedly DDR3 1600 will work with the i7 920/940, supposedly just gotta BIOS tweak it.

I went with a passively cooled ASUS EN8500GT video card which seems to be working well thus far.

On the mobo, I went with the same Gigabyte you are thinking about, knowing that I could only go 6GB RAM if I wanted to stay 3 channel mode and I also went with the Dominator RAM. You can go up to 16 GB in dual channel mode. I'm never short on RAM for the stuff I do and the system is working well for me with only 3 GB.

I came out the same as you're thinking relative to the Q6600 and thought for a bit more cash, I get a whole lot more capability.

    Right on :) Hmm...mmm. dominator...or 6GB. hmmm. That's gonna plague me for a few.

Ok, so. NVIDIA seems the way everybody goes...was eyeballing ATI for the first time in ages.

I couldn't find an 8500GT with dual DVI on NewEgg, and want to keep it all in the same order, so. Going dual monitors. For a couple bucks more, this Zotac 9800 GT got fantastic reviews. Any reason to avoid?

    Zotac 9800 GT 512MB ($124 -20 mail-in)

I have 74gb WD Raptor ...two versions.

The older one is a Raptor GD(i thought of raid-system, but theres no more GD-version) ...i love it, it works for years now, between 10.000-12.000 hours in action(s.m.a.r.t.).

The other one is a Raptor ADFD near the same hours run. Its the newer version but much louder(outstanding). I use it for games now.
I wouldnt buy it again atm...cause there are 7200rpm WD Element HDDs that dont have a worser data-rate.
They are much cheaper and u get 320 or 500 gb between 42 and 45 Euro. Raptor ADFD costs the double of it.(89Euro here)

All the WD Elements I see are external? I'm looking for a program/boot drive, hence the Raptor. Not sure if it's the 16MB cache or the 10K RPM that people are happy about, but very good to know that the new ones aren't as good.

Alternately, if it really doesn't make a stunning difference, an 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache Sata3.0 Seagate is $34.

Final build looks like it's going to be:

    i7 920
    Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R (TI fw)
6GB OCZ Platinum DDR3 1600 (was an extra $30 for future proofing)
    3xSeagate 500GB drives (1 prog/boot, 1 data/samples, 1 audio)
    OCZ StealthXStream 700W PS
Zoltac 9800GT 512Mb Vid (dual DVI)

Any final input, could use :)

...cakewalk has a section: How to build a DAW . It says u need a 7200rpm...nothing of 10.000. Also i didnt see any 10.000rpm hdd other than Raptore. No one needs the 10.000 rpm. Look that u have enough Ram. Good CPU. ( just saw ur 6gb...nice1 What operating system do u use?? 32bit 64bit? )

...maybe its just my ADFD that is so loud....but the price is soo high.

Sorry i made a mistake: I meant not WD "Elements". Element is external.

Caviar Blue(AAKS ending- i call it the Kalashnikov ;) ) it was with 500gb, 16mb Cache: 45Euro. (8,9/16/7200) its good...

XP Pro 32 - know I won't need the extra RAM, but future proofing, may go 64 in the future.

Benchmarked the Seagates very specifically, they're really sexy. Probably gonna put the order in tomorrow.

Tigerdirect has the Nvidia 9600GSO for $79.00 plus a $10.00 mail-in rebate. 784mb of DDR2 RAM, dual DVI(dual link)...I picked up two, one for the new net machine and one for the DAW/Graphics machine. I should really go with a Quadro Fx for the DAW/Graphics machine but I don't have the extra couple thousand for the card ;)

hrrrrr....oo. Mmmrm. ugh. Nicer price on the gso :) I'll check it out benchmark side - really liking the GDDR3 and the 700Mhz clock on the 9800GT tho.

    Thanks!
