New Computer re build and need some advice

Win 7, I7 intel 32 gigs DDR3, one 250 Gig SSD C drive, Two 1 terabyte sata drives configured as RAID 0, One Two terabyte sata for backup and several USB backup Drives.
I need to re install Sonar Platinum and many extra things from Cakewalk.

What files do I put on the SSD? And best method to download? Also what do you think is the best driver? Asio4all? other?

Thanks,

Billy

Where you put stuff depends on how much room you need and access speed. I would not have run raid 0 unless I had a humongous set of samples that had to be streamed from the drive in real time. I would probably have put programs on a small system/software drive, audio/projects data on a dedicated drive and the aforesaid samples on a third drive. I would not use an SSD, the cost/benefit for audio is not favorable. With 32G of memory you will rarely be accessing the drive real time.

As for drivers, use the ASIO driver provided by your audio interface manufacturer. If you spent money on 32G of memory, and do not have a capable audio interface, that was your biggest mistake.

I have Sonar on my 250Gb SSD C drive.  Use ASIO and NOT ASIO4ALL.  No need for RAID either.

Thanks for the feed back. I have the machine back up and running with everything working really well. This is a new world for me and I am not much of a computer guy. I will post a sample of some of the first new recordings soon.

I have an M-Audio Pro Fire 2626 and also a two channel M-Audio Fast Track Pro. The driver question was based on issues I was having getting a 32 bit on line almost real time software call ohm studio to recognize the interface. The software is still in development and has it's share of bugs. I used the M-audio driver and had a hell of a time getting it to work with ohm. As for all the other software I own like Sonar or Reaper I have never had any issues.

The Pro Fire 2626 runs on fire wire and I have had it for some time. It is for sure not a high end piece of gear but does the job for what I do.

It has always been my take that if a piece of music is really important to me I am going to a high quality professional studio and have professional engineers do the recording in any event.

Sonar Platinum is fun to work with for me and very useful to generate music on. I just don't know enough to do anything serious on my own. I have less than perhaps four or five thousand dollars invested in this system. That amount of money will not even get you one high quality microphone...lol

Use the devices native ASIO driver and uninstall asio4all completely from your computer.

Thanks for the feed back guys.

I  have a M-Audio Pro Fire 2626 as my main interface. I am using the native driver on this new re build. I used ASIO4all on the last build with less issues but had the idea the sound quality was not as good as the native driver would provide.

I do have issues with the audio driver from time to time. I really do not have the skill set to understand what causes the problems.

I generally have no issues if I am just using Sonar. If I forget to close Sonar and open another software program conflicts some time happen. I remember somewhere there was a setting having to do with how to let other programs use this driver but do not remember how to get to that screen. The program that causes the most problems is something called ohm studio which is not really stable yet. It is a near real time DAW for colabs.

As far as the RAID 0 issue I have been pretty happy with the results. Music is not the only thing I do on this computer.

Perhaps I will do another post just about drivers.

Thanks,

Billy

asio4all is a band aid intended for non ASIO driven devices (i.e. onboard Realtek sound cards).

Dump it like a hot potato.
