New DAW- calculated risk

Well, I just ordered a new DAW and took a calculated risk with a motherboard with VIA FW chipset.
Today I use an ECHO Audiofire firewire card, and it has been working great with my laptop setup (TI chipset).

My backup plan (if the VIA chipset gives me trouble) is to replace the motherboard or the firewire interface with a USB interface.
My question is: How are USB interfaces working with SONAR X1?
I've noticed that USB is getting more common (eg.v-studio-100) so they can't be that bad? or what?

My question is: How are USB interfaces working with SONAR X1?
That depends entirely on the quality of the interface and it's drivers. I would say that this is something Cakewalk have little control over. I've read positive reviews of the new(ish) RME interfaces running on USB. I seem to recall good experiences with Sonar and the Edirol interfaces. No idea about anything else...

The Vstudio-100 should be something they have control over.

(Maybe some part of me wants the firewire to not work, so I can justify a Vstudio-100 investment )

I would personally look into the RME because they seem to have a solid reputation with their non-USB products. The Fireface UC costs a fair amount more than the V-Studio 100 though I'm sure its a much higher quality product.

I don't immediately see any mention of the AudioFire not being compatible with a VIA chipset. I know the feeling of wanting to justify an upgrade or lateral move to a new product but I doubt you'll notice much, if any, difference if you switch to the V-Studio. That's just a guess and not based on real world experience with either product.

Buy the VS-100! you will love it.  Especially if you are mobile.  Great for on the road recording.

If my ECHO interface don't like the VIA chipset, then the VS-100 would be my first choice.
I really like moving faders, and one is much better than zero.
