New Folk Metal song...i think my catchiest one yet
http://soundcloud.com/markhaigh/of-fire-and-flame Kinda epic folk metal thing, really really tried to get the drums better for you peeps, it has a weird structure, with an intro, then an interlude, then a verse/chorus kinda bit, then another interlude, then a final fast verse and chorus kinda thing, but without any of it being the same, other than related cos it's in the key of Am.....lol. Anyhow, some quite catchy bits i think in the second half, so stick with it, and as ever let me know where i done wrong...oh it does feature black metal vocals i'm afraid, but also some clean singing too. http://soundcloud.com/markhaigh/of-fire-and-flame

Hi Mark, folk music sure has evolved . Sorry that I don't know anything about "black metal" so I won't comment on your vocals but the guitar playing is very tight and controlled and the song is interesting to say the least. It's slightly louder than the music I normally listen to , but that might be on purpose. Greetings, Rik

love the break out around 1:10ish.....and the following bass line works so nicely. I'd like that bass tone a lil less bloated....gezzzzz great lead there after...maybe a touch of verb on that would open it up a bit? the 3:10 bvox are great...I'd push them far left and right to split the seam so to speak....love the 4:20 lil gutiar lead-lick sneaking 'tween the vox...very nicely done. Right at the 5:10 mark that section made me grin. I'd try to reinforce that bopping-mood there....i loved it. 7:10 I'd gradually double and triple the bvox...nudge some and spread them all over the map and make that sound as if the whole nation is singin there... great song!!

Well you definitely have many subgenres of metal under your belt! I don't think I've seen any Viking Metal from you, so put that on your to-do list. I liked the clean tone and the nice moods established during those parts (esp around 5:00). It creates a nice contrast. Based on my limited familiarity of black/death metal, it reminded me of Opeth in parts. Pretty epic stuff here!

Holy Smokes. Definitley something for the campfire... and sacrafice. You know Mark I'm on the go here so I'm listening on buds so I can't really crit the mix but it sounds really good in general on buds loud which is a really good thing. The song sounds cohesive the whole way through. What I mean is with all the different changes, solos, vox etc. nothing really sounds surgically implanted it all sounds like one epic tune. The evil guitars during the verse that are snarling in the backround are a great choice. Nice sweeps at the end and the outro vox sound cool too. I'll listen to this at home kranked. I really liked this. Maybe my favorite from you.

I was trying to listen on a portable mp3 player at the airport? And unfortunately, it set off the metal detector :-( I liked the normal vocal parts, you should consider doing a whole song that's in that style? Just for S's and G's?

I really like this song. I am hearing Cm and Fm but I don't hear the Am. No matter, it is a nice piece of rock opera.

Rik - well folk may be pushing it, although it's a big sub-genre in metal now, lots of accordian and such! Tom - well many thanks for the in-depth critique bro! i am gonna try and broaden the clean vox out at the end, the catchy bits will have to stay short though i think! and therefore more catchy! i will alter the bass tone in the clean bits too though...

A really interesting, epic kind of piece you put together there, Mark, with lots of interesting crossplays and counters. My favorite was the interplay between the strings and the guitar on the outro. I think Tom hit a winner with that idea of building the BG Vox up at the end... what a build that would give you into the outro. Enjoyed hearing you actually singing, and I thought it sounded really good. Could our favorite metal head be mellowing with age ???? Seriously- I always enjoy listening to your material, as it's invariably interesting and innovative.

Mark, i reckon that Dream of Gerontius project honed your skills to a high degree- this is epic!! I got a hint of Yes in the noodling clean guitar section, some It Bites in the 'straight vocal' chorus bits, a chunk of Maiden in the opening riffage..man there's a lot to take in here. I gots to listun agin.. James btw..love 'The Inbetweeners', I know I shouldn't, but it cracks me up.

Dave - Viking/Folk pretty much the same to my mind! Bathory remains the principle influence for both! Anyhow you have some good reference points there with Opeth, another band i like a lot and who influence this sorta song is Primordial. Mark - Cheers! Cranked is always good. Well you know i have to put in all these different moods, i get bored with the same volume/tempo/instrumentation...i am also less averse to getting a bit tuneful....maybe next song will be hummable?! Robby - i have done a few songs with just clean vocals; Remember on Soundcloud has quite a bit of clean stuff, Come on Home is totally clean vox, and on Soundclick Parts 2, 4, 10, 11, 12 feature just clean vox....when you hear them you'll know why i don't do it more!

Daisy -a ritual huh? glad it engenders some emotions, nothing worse than boring! Scott - great ears! As i tune to C standard, you are entirely right, the piece is pretty much in Fm...but playing it on the guitar it is 'played' in Am. Todd (Juvonte?) - ooh yeah get your distortion pedal back out dude! Phil - many thanks for your considered opinions...mellowing?! Hah i will be altering the finale on Monday hopefully... James - wow, many thanks sir. Certainly quite a bit of twin guitar stuff in this one, as i say quite tuneful for me! John -

Wow, this is interesting. I must say I enjoyed listening, even though the goth type of vox is not normally for me. I think it's the contrast in the arrangement and it kept my interest to see what happens next. Sounds like it's mixed well. I like the synth sound and how it lays in there. Nice metal riffage. Nice work.

You've been honest with me all along so I will be honest with you here, there's just not anything that appeals to me musically in this. The drums sound unnatural and robotic to me. I don't really like much growling so I really can't enjoy most of the vocals on this, I didn't like the clean guitar tone for the clean solo. The shredding was OK but to be honest not to my tastes either. You are a talented musician Mark but alas I'm afraid we must have opposite tastes. Edit: I don't dislike you in any way, you have a great sense of humor, you have better team in football than Phil, and I agree with much of your politics, but I wouldn't ever ask you to borrow a CD and I don't think you'd want to borrow any of mine. Sorry if too honest

Only the intro is folk. The interlude is progressive rock kind like "Yes". Rest is metal. I'll take it the way it is. As other had said, it is quite an epic song and it builds up very dramatic at the end. Great job!

I quite like this, though the genre isn't really my thing, and it's inventively put together. I would guess I'm hearing something of a Cradle of Filth influence (??). Vocals sound a bit like Danni Filth (a la Her Ghost In The Fog) to these ears anyway.
