New Instrumental - "Written in Stone" - UPDATED

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=9315285

Here's my newest tune.  Comments welcome.

EDIT:  I have reworked the song.  There should no longer be any timing issues.  I've reworked the drums and brought up the bass guitar.

Like it.  Mellow with a nice beat.  The drum fills need work and the lead gtr could be touched up a bit.  Reminds me a little of Beck.  With some touchups, this could be a great instrumental.

great playing Mark, as we expect. At times the lead sounds a little off timing wise, but you have been going for that. i like the unusual scale you have going on for the main riff, it's a nice Satriani-esque moment. the piece is well-constructed to keep the attention. if you cold tighten a few timing issues up then it'd be perfect!

    Thanks Pluto, mgh, Herb, Frank.

My timing is always suspect.  It sounds good in the room but after i burn it and listen elsewhere I can hear the flubs too.  do they make room treatment for that?

Great tone my friend, especially on the low notes.  It's got that nice tube sag.

I agree, it does have a bit of Santriani vibe.  Put it on you Surfin' With the Texan CD

Cool harmonics too.  Drifty, but very melodic.

That's lovely stuff Mark. I like the lift at 1:05-ish. As always your phrasing reminds me a lot of Steve Rothery from Marillion (intended as a big compliment)

I hear the timing issues that Mark (mgh) mentioned, but they disappear as the track goes on - I wonder if you have some latency in the first minute or so? Sounds like the file could be nudged back a smidge and it would sit perfectly.

Some very creative touches at the end - what the heck was that you did at 3:06?? Really cool.

Hey Daryl, thanks.  I used the strat for the leads and the les paul for the rhythms.

Thanks James, It's not latency, I just have bad timing.  The thing at 3:06 is me double picking fast on the D string while lightly touching the string with a finger on my left hand, as I sweep it towards the bridge and back over the pickups.  Just harmonics really.

How ironic - I mostly use my Strat for rhythm and my humbuckers for lead.  Go figure

For me, I like the LP for the crunchy, chunky chord strikes, and it has a nice full bottom for clean arpeggios.  The strat is at home in the midrange where I get my lead tones.  Of course it all depends on the song, but the LP wouldn't have been able to pull off the lead on this one.

I should collab with you cause I don't hear the timing issues.    Oh, we did once, didn't we?  :-)  Anyway, great tune.  I love hearing you play and this was no exception.  Always nice to hear something new from you.  Since Daryl mentioned the cool thing at 3:06, I listened for it especially.  Great stuff! I have absolutely no idea what you're doing there, but I was hoping to hear it again.  But it all gets really cool after 3:00 anyway--I love the cool reverb and echoes.

    Great job!

    Mark,

I really like your guitar playing. Its very expressive. However I too heard timing issues with the track. You are going to have to work on that part of your game. To end on a positive note your style of playing is very listenable.Sometimes long guitar workouts can leave the listener behind but this wasnt the case with this track.

I'm liking the drum sound.  Like the lead tone, too.  Seems like there's very little bass guitar on this, though.  You could very subtly address the relative volumes, I think.  Lead and arpeggio guitar could be pulled back slightly (relative to the drums) and bass could come up, IMHO.

I like the overall vibe of this, though.  Nice!

Yo Mark! I love that mezermizing apreggiated part that drives the song. It really sets the mood. After about 3:00 some of those leads parts are insane - there were a couple of "WTF was that??" moments (in a good way!). I loved how you mixed in some big note bends with the shredding in such a fluid way.

Yeah the timing of the first minute or so was distracting but after that there wasn't anything that felt too out of the pocket. Mix-wise, I would bring down that hi-hat.

    Nice composition and awesome tones.

Nice song and great playing, Mark.

Tons of really cool licks throughout...

You might want to patent the lick that occurs around 3:06

    I like this a lot!

I din't get a chance to hear your previous version, but I can confirm that this one is nice and tight. That steady and strong rythym supports the song very well and showcases your guitar skills very very well. Familiar with the "Cirque du Soleil"? I can easily imagine this instrumental part of an act, very easily. That's a big compliment from my POV. A good dose of emotional/edgy/catchy/raunchy energy without going over the top. I have no nits with the mix at all, quite the contrary. It's excellent. Bravo Mark!

Mark, excellent compostion bud. Some really sick runs just before the hihat gets busy. Love the tone of the lead. Bass guitar "blooms" just tiny bit too much. This might be some of your most emotive playing yet. Great to hear you back here. When's the Cd coming out. Put me down for the first one.

I dig this a lot and it seems tighter on this take.  I echo Randy's sentiments on the bass, maybe roll off the bottom end a little more.

This is nice composition.  It reminds me of Neal Schoen thing, which won't offend you I'm sure.   You are the rock guitar messiah!  You melodic phrasing is always spot on.  You have such a great feel for what should be played next.

Thanks Scott, it's my Blues Sr.

Thanks Alegria.  I always liked the tunes Cirque du Soleil uses.

Thanks Randy.  Iagree about the bass.  "Bloom" is a perfect description too.  Still working on the CD, but hope to do something before summer is out.

Thanks mgh.  Appreciate you checking back.

Thanks Daryl.  Agree about the bass.  I recorded the bass using an octave pedal, so I'm not used to mixing it yet.

    Thanks Crg.
