New Jersey

Hello. I haven't posted a song for almost 2 years. Here is the first "mostly-done" song from my new project. I am not from New Jersey. I have never lived in New Jersey. I am quite frightened of New Jersey. But I keep dreaming about it as if its where I grew up and where I will live out the rest of my life. So I wrote a song to try to STOP these dreams. It hasn't worked... Anyway, any and all feedback/criticism is welcome, as its been so long I have probably lost whatever skills I had... Thanks...

New Jersey!!!

Very nice track and production and the mix sounds good apart from the drums sounding a bit dull and limp. The whole would probably benifit from a touch of air and some mastering steroids but it's essentially there. Great tune.

Hi there, the link is working now...... Good sound, I really nice the use of the electronic samples half way trough the song and also the "nuances" in the song witch make it dynamic.
Another thing that I noticed is the Bass, in some parts is going trough the roof, it might be a good thing to re-mix the bass track.

    Cheers,
    Pedro.

Great guitar tone and playing. Strange lyrics man. I like the out-of-norm stuff.

It's about time you got off the forum long enough to make some music, man. (Like I can talk!)

I enjoyed the tune, Greg. Personally, I can't muster much enthusiasm about New Jersey - but then, I've only been to Newark.

Technical criticism: there's a nasty buzz going on throughout much of the song, and the drums need to be brightened up. I'd go in with Audition or Sound Forge and take out a few lip smacks, always a problem with this kind of close intimate vocal.

Now get back to work, and try not to wait another 2 years before making another appearance here!

Cool song! I've never been to NJ either, but for some reason this song makes me feel like I should avoid going there at all cost, for whatever that's worth . I agree with Nick that it could benefit from some sonic polishing (esp. on the drums). I love the guitars. And your voice (I assume) is excellent - it sounds similar to Tom Hooper's (Grapes of Wrath, Ginger, now solo) voice, one of my all-time favorite musicians. Nice use of effects overall.

Hey like this. I lived in South Jersey for a while, the garden part of the Garden State.

As Nick mentioned, the drums need some beefing up and some eq in general to brighten it up. I liked the vocals.

OK. Thanks for the feedback. Now how the HECK do I give the drums more life? I played the track on a Roland TD-6V and used the EZDrummer Vintage Rock drumset. The only effects are a mild send to a plate verb in Perfect Space and...well, that's it. Maybe VC-64? Or some EQ? Or....any ideas appreciated. And as far as an overall, mastering-type sheen, yeah, I usually do that in SoundForge after exporting from Sonar (ParPL EQ, Waves MB and/or L2 or Elephant), so I guess I'll try that as soon as I cut some of the lip-smacks and make the drums fuller and even out the bass track. Any techie tips are welcome....Thanks again...

Do you have Ozone? The harmonic exciter module works great for brightening up drums, especially cymbals.

Yes, I do! But I mostly just use the CD case to prop up my monitor. I haven't installed it since Sonar 5. I just never got the hang of it. Well, I'm gonna give it a go tonight, even though my monitor will be tilted towards my knees...

Surely you have other suitable CD titles that could substitute as a monitor leveler.

I usually only use the top two bands of the exciter, one set to 1KHz, the other to 6-8KHz. I put the lower band up to between 2 and 3, the upper band to between 3 and 4. The lower band affects the snare primarily, the upper band gives a nice ring to ride cymbals.

Another thing I like to do for beefier drums is to clone the kick track and route it to the TTS-1. It has a nice deep kick sound that's too electronic-sounding by itself but lends a satisfying thump when doubled with an acoustic sample. Sometimes the same trick works with the toms, too.

Awesome!!! This is the stuff that gets me excited!!! (uhh...well, musically, at least...)
