New LP plugins prevent transport "Stop" btn activating (Side effect of Bug [CWBRN-50523])

This is more or less a random effect. I haven't figured a 100% repeatable recipe, but this is how far I got:

1. Create new project (Blank, no name will do)
2. Add an audio track
3. Record a few seconds - silence will do.
4. Add a master bus and put the new multiband compressor in the effects bin. Add a band or two.
5. Assign the output of the audio track to the master bus.

Here's where the messing around starts.
Close the multiband compressor and re-open it by clicking on the middle of the bar in the FX bin.
Start Play in the transport controls. If the Stop button lights up, the fault hasn't happened, so stop the transport, click around and change some values in the MB compressor, possibly close and re-open it, then start play again.

After some messing around, I find the Stop button stays de-activated. Clicking on it will not stop play. Only closing the MB compressor will activate the stop button, allowing me to stop play.

Anyone able to reproduce this behavior?

Sometimes it happens the first time you try, usually it takes some patience.

I also notice sometimes the Stop button DOES activate, but with a bit of a hesitation.

This happens to me all the time now. In my case, not just since the two new plugins. Since one of the Platinum releases during 2015. I've commented on it previously but until now I've not seen anyone else express this scenario is happening to them.

In my case I can add a VST of just about any flavor and after doing some tweaks on it after a certain amount of actions the Stop on the transport gets grey and the now time just keeps playing.

I can save my file, quit Sonar, reopen my file and everything is fine. Rinse and repeat.

This happens to me so often I've just become accustomed to it as my new norm.

I've happily accepted sending my analytics to the Cakewalk team (with this new release) in the hopes they'll see a ridiculous spike in this error situation from my feed to their analysis.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Really? Interesting.
I did try the old 5-band MB and was unable to reproduce the effect.
Perhaps I didn't try often enough. I'll give it another go.

I am also getting the sluggish effect mentioned in another thread - the Now cursor stumbling along and appearing as double lines. I'll try again with Linear Phase off.

I have a Win7/64bit i7 12GB RAM laptop, dedicated to DAW only (no antivirus, no WiFi, etc) so it's not a slow machine.

Is this machine using ASIO4All instead of a vendor written audio driver? If so, it may not matter how much computing power the machine has.

No.
This is my studio machine and only uses the ASIO drivers supplied with my Cakewalk UA-25EX interface.

I also have an old small Atom-powered XP netbook for recording bands in their rehearsal rooms.
That has Sonar 8.5.3 and uses ASIO4All.

This is to be expected if they're operating in Linear Phase mode. There is an option in the plugin window under the Expert button to switch the precision to non linear.
Try this to improve the latency

It seems you have a lot of "one off" bugs that others have not been able to reproduce. I wonder if this means something in your system is problematic.

The vast majority of bugs I have reported have been confirmed by other users, two of which you confirmed for me, too.

Let's wait for these plugins to see wider usage before jumping to conclusions.

I hate to say it but your interface is not helping you. I had the same model and it's a USB 1.1 design. I had no end of weird and random glitches until I dumped it and bought something modern. The Roland drivers were not good on that device. I know you will say it's only Sonar where you have trouble, and it was the same for me. As illogical as it sounds, life got better once the Cakewalk interface was replaced.

The problem is repeatable on my PreSonus AudioBox 22VSL, Tascam US-1641, US-1800 and US-16x08.

Of all of these, my Cakewalk UA-25EX has given me the least trouble.
The drivers have been updated regularly by Roland.

I should probably take advantage of the sig feature on this forum, save unnecessary repetition.

I'll include links to the bugs and incorrect documentation and the threads in which users confirm and help me build a recipe.

Which audio settings do you have, I mean 44.1/48/96, 16/24, ASIO buffer size?
Which settings under LP "Expert" options do you use?

I have tried with several combinations, but everything works like excepted. But may be other use different from your options.

It could be a virus your virus software missed.  This happened to me, and I went to http://www.eset.com/us/on...nner/?CMP=knc-Google-G|S-US-BR-C-Other|B&gclid=COK-nKbbucwCFcRgfgodAm0Gvg They have a free online scanner and they found and fixed my problem.  I had 3 different virus' on my computer that were all missed by Windows Defender and Hitman Pro.  This online scanner found them and removed them for free.  The scan took several hours on my internet connection to complete, but it was well worth the effort.  Maybe something you want to check out.

In my case the Stop button on the Transport greys out and the song just keeps playing.

It is not related to effects in my case. This happens even on songs I have zero effects added into the song file.

It does happen after I've been playing / recording a soft synth. Any soft synth, not a particular one.

Seems to happen at random.

Happens frequently for me. I'm living with it, still happy with Sonar. But this is a nuisance.

I'm very glad I'm seeing others experiencing this as well. I've had this issue since several releases of Platinum. Not sure when it started, but for at least 4 months now.

Re: New LP plugins prevent the transport "Stop" button from activating 2016/05/02 17:33:35 (permalink)
Just for additional reference: I did as OP instructed in orig post. I added the new LP eq to master bus-no issues. I then added the new LP MB-no issue. I then added Isotope 5 to the master bus-all three active in master bus and still-no issues. I just used various presets from all 3 plugs. Am I doing something wrong to try and reproduce this. Because everything is fine. Tried with recorded audio-just silence, Then tried with recorded guitar track noodling. Still no issues.
I am on latest SP update.
Edit: Should mention both the spacebar stop/start and the stop button work as they should-and no stutters.

Re: New LP plugins prevent the transport "Stop" button from activating 2016/05/02 21:15:31 (permalink)
I'm experiencing similar symptoms to the OP, but not from doing the same actions.   It's happening to me in files that have absolutely no effects in them.  I recognize it's probably just me and specific to my computer.  But it's interesting to see the symptom is happening to others.

For me, unlike the OP, once the Stop button on the transport is greyed out there's no way to get the Stop button active again.  I am able to save the file.  I use Control Alt Delete - Task Manager to get out of Sonar.  I can then open the file again and all is well.

It's very peculiar.  I'll stop mentioning it now, unless I see it happen to someone else again.  I've noted this before, but it seems to not be happening to the general population (one would think it would never happen, so I'm guessing it's something related to my machine).

I was searching for a solution to another issue (freezing while looping) when I ran across this post. I downloaded Eset's trial and it found sixteen instances of malware on my machine that my religiously used Windows Defender did not find. And removing those little buggers fixed my lock up issues with Sonar. Sixteen! Holy moses.

OP, bz2838 gives good advice. Have you tried scanning for malware with a good security tool?

Re: New LP plugins prevent the transport "Stop" button from activating 2016/05/03 13:28:57 (permalink)
Some more information.
I opened the Performance tab in Task Manager and observed the following:

If I open the LP MB or EQ dialog window, one of the cores (usually - but not always - the first core) increases to about 40-50% and cores 3, 5 and 8 show around 5% activity (very spikey, this is average). The bar on the left varies between 9 and 15%.

After two or three seconds, the laptop's cooling fan speeds up.

If I close the LP MB (or LP EQ)'s window (it is still enabled!), activity reduces way down to near 0% and the fan begins to slow down again.

I have also tried other effects, particularly Ozone 7 which is also known to be processor-hungry.
It also shows some activity but these are single spikes when I physically open the window or do something, then when I stop, activity goes down to near 0.

Please note I am only opening and closing the effects windows. I have not hit play yet.
And I am testing with a single audio track containing 10sec of silence with and one master bus, and with only one effect inserted at a time, in the Master bus.

I don't have the feeling this is due to a virus.
It seems these plugins have something with their front-ends that uses quite some processor power, just by being open.

indeed that sounds like classic inefficient gui code, especially closing the window reduces cpu to ~0%

Just to confirm. LP MB, inserted into Master bus, transport stop (but that does not make any difference), in % of CPU used as displayed by resource monitor:
DISABLED - NO GUI - 0%
DISABLED - GUI - 10%
DISABLED - GUI, Expert settings open - 18%
ENABLED - NO GUI - 5%
ENABLED - GUI - 16%
ENABLED - GUI, Expert settings open - 23%

And that is with Analyzer:Fast, Precision:Non Linear.

For comparison, LP-64, enabled, GUI, - ~0%

Conclusions:
a) LP does something once enabled, that "something" is moderately CPU heavy
b) LP GUI is not written by programmers...

EDIT: ProChannel EQ, in FlyOut mode, during play - ~0%. CW knows how to write GUI

To be more detailed about it, under certain conditions the stop button ceases to work with just these LP plugins. I do not have this issue with other plugins which are CPU inventive or do look ahead. Remove these LP plugins and the issue goes away. I have no viruses or malware, and a very good Focusrite Scarlett interface with latest ASIO drivers. I normally have very good performance, my PC specs are pretty good.

I don't know the technical details on how this may be caused, but I know something is up as three of us now have similar issues with the stop button and these plugins.

WOW! You are right! When I opened the Expert window, CPU cores 1, 3 and 5 shot up and are hitting 100%!
And the cooling fan has just increased another notch in speed! Crazy!

When you say 0%, 10% etc... which core are you looking at?

As you can see in my spec, I have just 2 cores ;)
But I am looking at "CPU consumption" for the program, in numbers.

I guess big part of the issue some users have and other do not come from the not extremely real time aware intercommunications within PC. I mean for how long the hardware is blocked during CPU/RAM/GPU depends from near everything inside the computer, motherboard, graphic card and drivers. Since CW say they use OpenGL and we observe huge (for computer) CPU load, probably there is continuous  hammering the system bus. ASIO audio drivers are not build to tolerate any delays, so one single buffer underrun can produce the whole set of strange effects, from drop outs till "hanging" transport.

Just curious, when you see "no stop" effect, if you press "Audio/MIDI reset" button, what happens with audio and the button?

Transport stops and the Now cursor jumps back to the beginning.
Spacebar also works.
In my case, only the Stop button in the Transport fails to light up and react to clicks.

OK, I think we have this one nailed, although this looks more like a case of poor programming rather than a bug as such.
