New Mix: Broken

Hey all,

Decided to re-do this one which I wrote and recorded back in 2000 with my new equipment and knowledge. as usual, i spent the whole day with my cans so now my ears are a little shot. i replaced the mp3 file on the site so that's why the plays are over a hundred but no one's heard this latest mix yet. appreciate any feedback on mix / arrangement etc. once again, thanks in advance for listening!

Alawn, You could add a little more presence to the vox. Also, the vocals seemed off pitch throughout, flat.

Like the song. I agree with Tom that the vox needs to 'come out' a little more from the rest of the mix. The freq's are conflicting a little. I know it's not fun, especially after spending days on a mix...

Mark - thanks for listening! one of my better tunes i guess but it needs a lot more work. eeeks.

Tom - is it really off throughout the whole song? that's pretty scary. after listening again, perhaps the chorus needs some fine tuning, and the bridge.

Ihansen - thanks for listening. well if it's not quite there, i guess i better work on it some more! it's a 1st draft so glad i got me some extra ears to point me in the right direction. thanks again folks.

Not my kind of music, but the vox seemed fine to me. Overall I think it is a very good mix

    Alawn,

Good song. i do agree about vox dipping into the flat zone in a couple spots. otherwise mix sounds good to me and i really like the lyrics.

Alawn - I liked the mix, almost a Jeremy Camp feel. I noticed a few vocal pitch issues also. Good arrangement.

"All you've gone" is good song - pretty rock'n (my cup of tea!). Good lyrics!

The lead vocals are fine. It's the harmonies during the chorus that have some off notes. Their either flat, or the harmonies are conflicting...can't tell for sure. Overall mix could use some sparkle, it sounds a bit muted. Otherwise, a really good tune and worth working on further.

it's a great song, I think what they are hearing is the doubling on the lead vox, there are a couple of small spots where they're a little off, but again, I think mainly it's the doubling. it can tend to make it sound sharp/flat because it's almost impossible to do it the same both times.

I think you have a nice voice, why not try the verse without the doubling effect? Also, if you have vvocal, it will show you if you're sharp/flat. However, Melodyne is the shizite ;-)

    fibredrive,
I agree with the others on the pitch problems. The verses sound pretty good to me, but could be more up front. The bridge is where I noticed the most problems with pitch. The mix sounds pretty good to me overall. Love the guitars! You've got a good recording going here if you sort out the pitch problems. Nice arrangement and melody.

    Alawn,

I like this song! Great hook, nice arrangement and production. As some others have pointed out, there are pitch issues with the vox which distract a bit from the otherwise good production.

A few suggestions on vocal pitch:
    1) I assume you're tracking vocals while wearing headphones. If your vocal is too hot in the headphone mix, you'll tend to sing flat. (I know from experience). Try tracking with the vocal a little lower in the phones.
    2) It sounds a little like you're producing the sound too far in the back of your throat, which produces a darker sound and will tend to distort your sense of pitch. Try thinking of producing the sound from the front of your mouth. This will brighten the tone and make the pitch easier to track.
    3) Be sure to take the headphones off 1 ear when tracking. It'll be easier to hear any pitch problems.
    4) It's a real skill to sing well with phones on. It takes practice to get good at it, so don't get discouraged.

oh wow, first up, really want to thank everyone for taking time to listen. didn't know so many replies here as my yahoo email would usually inform me when someone has replied to the post. but it didn't this time. Noted everyone's comments on my vocal problems and also thanks for all the helpful advice on techniques. As such, I've plonked a sum of money on a singing program which i truly hope will help me somehow. perhaps i will record this song again once I am done with the singing program and see if there's any difference! :) will do a before and after....heh.

, thanks for the tips as well. will play around with the doubling effect and see what can be done. in the meantime, i am toying with the idea of recording it at a lower key to accomodate my range. i am literally screaming at the bridge in this one. hehe.

Gary, it's interesting what you've mentioned. I usually track with my headphones on all the time and the signal is normally quite hot. will try out what you've suggested. thanks a bunch!

Hey Alawn, the reason I know about the headphone level affecting the pitch perception is because I struggled for the longest time trying to figure out why I couldn't seem to sing better in tune on recordings. Finally I read a post from a pro I really respect about this and figured I'd give it a try. It has *really* helped me. I'm not a great singer, but at least the headphone pitch skewing issue isn't compounding my natural vocal problems so much any more.

hi all, i decided to re-do the entire song, starting from scratch again. redid the arrangements and all, gave it a bit more acoustic and kept the solo at the end which i felt i really wanted to put back in since my friend spent an awful lot of time coming up with it! i tried singing with one headphone off so hopefully this track has less pitch problems. plus i lowered the key a bit. hehe. grateful for fresh ears and a new perspective. thanks folks!!

fibredrive, I like this version much better. Most of the pitch problems are very minor compared to the last version too. The first line sounds a bit off-key to me, but for the most part, everything else is really good to my ears. The improvement is very significant. I thought that overall the vocal could be a tad more up-front. Man, you have some really nice harmonies going on in this. Nice arrangement and playing and the mix sounds pretty good. Your extra effort has payed off nicely!
