New Nettlesmith song - 'The Lifetime He Had'
Hi all, Been a while...here's a new song by Tim Wilkinson and I. In my mind's ear, I can hear the bass and drums, so I'm okay with this bare-naked version. Beautiful song, wonderful lyric and melody.

Its always good to hear a new collaboration from you and Tim.
Tim's lyrics are spare and speak from the heart. The arrangement is as spare as the lyrics with a pleasing, droning accordian-like keyboard part. The percussion is an interesting choice with a part that (by itself) sounds like a part for an up-beat pop number. I would consider a simple, soft bass part with sustained notes, but this is a good song that is well sung, and it sounds just fine as it is.
Strong work as usual.

wow I love that keyboard! What a beautiful sparse mix and tribute! Tim is the best singer I've heard. So is the guitar. very nice!

I like it sparse, but that busy brush hi hat and wood block on the four seem to indicate it's going full drums and bass kick ass any moment now. As a listener I feel punk'd. Did I spell that right?

Hi, James, Very moving and emotional song with heartfelt vocals and meaningful lyrics! Tim's voice sounds wonderful as always, the vintage keys sound nice, your guitar solos are tastefully done and the guitar tone is rich sounding and perfect for the song. My only suggestion would be to slightly raise the level of the instrument part that comes into the left channel at around the :45 second mark because the keys sort of overwhelm it throughout. It almost sounds like a nylon string guitar or other string instrument, but I can't quite make it out. But, then again, maybe my ears are shot after a couple hours of mixing. Anyway, it's always great to hear something new from you and Tim, and this is another winner! Please convey my sincere condolences to Tim on the loss of his Grandfather. Best Wishes, James! Bob

Nice one, like the bare bones approach. Really well-written song.
Personally, I would like to hear something bassy take the edge off the keyboard by the 2nd verse. When the guitar comes in, for example, that creates a nice balance with the keyboard and takes the focus off just the keyboard alone.
The first guitar solo sounds a bit like Brian May:) Both solo's are really quite excellent, and of course, the vocals are awesome as well.

Wow, this is a really sweet song and a touching tribute to the man. I'm sorry for his loss, and I'm grateful for this wonderful music that came from it. The mix itself is just great, thanks for sharing this.

Sorry to hear about Tim's loss... Like the song though! The GB percussion I could take or leave, but the arrangement and flea market keyboard do give it a lonely/isolated vibe that works well. Nice solo at the end BTW.

It is both fortunate and unfortunate that this song came about as the result of a loss. I think that this is some amazing music by you two and I believe it's a great tribute song. We are fortunate to have heard it.
Do you plan to keep it as is which is fine or do you plan to add to the arrangement? I could hear some light synth parts in the background, but ok without too. You two make a great team!

Hello Sirs,
I love the use of the cheesy keyboard thing. The presentation is very much like a dirge, I used to have a similar one and it came in handy for the style of music I make.
The lyrics are heartfelt. Death is such a paradigm shift that anyone who can make heads or tails out of it, or even render a person’s life into a song is amazing.
It sounds like a bass is sneaking in there around 1:15, but then it fades off, so maybe that is an overtone or something.
Really like what happens at 2:15. It sounds like the keys through an amp sim or something? and then again at 3;33. But that sounds like a guitar there, so maybe my ears are playing tricks on me.? On another listen the sound at 2:15 seems to be a little of both. Regardless, great way to match the two sounds if that is what you did.
I like the simple quality of it, and I mean that in a good way. What’s wrong with simple?
After a third listen, I have developed a few more opinions. If I were your producer, and if you had intentions of revisiting this, I would say boost the vocals, pull off the reverb ,if you used any, and experiment with some different percussion sounds. I think that maybe there is a better choice, and then I would maybe only play them on quarter notes,(I’m not sure if that is what I mean) but the percussion is a little busy.
