New Original: Meant To Be - humbly submitted for review

Hi everyone,
I post quite infrequently but always return to this wonderful forum for constructive criticism on my songs. I always learn so much from you all and come away with a better product, so please have at it and let me know what to do more of in this mix and what needs to go!

The song is at the top of the list "Meant To Be".

Great bass sound; what patch is that? It works so well (though I might think about humanizing it a bit, adding a little slop).

    Kick could come up some.

I do like the arrangement. Gives some real distinction between verse and chorus.

Distorted guitar needs some more bite. Same with the lead.

A little mastering to widen it out and this puppy's done.

I agree with Tony...very very nice!  Love the tune and the arrangement.  Well, maybe those piano chords get a little repetitive near the end.  But overall, I really like this!

Thank you all so much for posting.

James - Thank you for the critical listen - I will get to these changes this weekend - perhaps some B3 added to intro and final chorus as well.

Tony - I appreciate your encouraging words.

Janet - Thank you as well - I didn't get very imaginative with the piano part - if you have any ideas and are willing to track parts, I'd love to have your performance on the track.

    More opinions welcome!
    Thanks,
    Paul

That's kind of you, Paul, and I'd love to take a crack at it, but don't hold your breath.  I can't seem to get into the studio for the life of me these days.  :(  In the meantime, you could try breaking up the chords with little riffs (or whatever they're called on a piano)...I'm hearing something on the 3 & a 4 & beats, but that probably doesn't make any sense to you and you can't hear me humming it.  :(

    Still a really cool song!

    Thanks Janet!

I wanted to bump this post one time as a "last chance" to collect feedback prior to remix this coming weekend. Thanks again everyone for taking the time to listen!

BTW - If anyone can point me to a keyboard player and/or drummer possibly interested in tracking some of my songs, I'd appreciate it! I have many songs that require such assistance: http://www.youtube.com/pauldevillo
    Thanks again,

I like the song and the performances but there seems to be a "trebly" sound to it.  Now, that's why I don't do a lot of mix critiques.  I hear one thing one time and something else another.  I think it might be the guitar, 12 string?  Either way, I like the song.

Your mix sounds small and thin.  This is NOT a master, but you should be able to get your mix to sound a lot better than my pseudo-mastering: http://tinyurl.com/3hh6joo

I just used EQ and a hint of reverb on your stereo track.  Just imagine what could be done at the track level ;-)

    Peace,

Nice song.  I think you did a good job on the arrangement, you could try varying the verses a lot - the instrumentation seems the pretty much the same in every verse.  You could try experimenting by taking away different instruments in the first verse, add one of them back in on the 2nd, etc., just to add a little more interest.  Nice vocals!

The song works great. I get the same impression as Warren in that it seems to be a bit boosted in the upper-mid frequencies.  That guitar lead at the end adds a lot to this tune... I would back off a tad on the volume, though. Love the keyboard thing as well at the end, nice little bit of spice.

Nice stuff! Cool pop song. I would personally add some effects to the vocals, at least in spots, to add some interest. But it works well as is. Good job!

Very nice song!  A bit of Sixpence None the Richer.  Agreed with the thin mastering.  I use BBE SonicMaximer to add more punch to the track.

Thanks everyone for these thoughtful responses. I see the patterns now and will continue to remix with an ear on a fuller frequency mix.

Jsaras - I was amazed at the difference your EQ and reverb treatment made. I've never really tried "mastering" any of my songs and I see now that it makes quite a profound difference.

Great voice Paul! I like the song very much. The mix as stated is thin. I too need much work in producing a final mix in my songs also. Learning to do that is the fun part for me. Please keep more songs coming!

Great tune, Paul, and really well done.  Love the main riffs that run behind the verses... puts in the mind of Mike and the Mechanics' "All I Need is a Miracle."  Good stuff.  I'm not sure I really have crits, so much as my personal take on how I might want to do this.  So, FWIW, here it is:
    1. Bring the vocal up a bit in the verses.
    2. Add some harmony in the choruses.
    3. See how an organ part would sound on the choruses.
    4. I liked the little outro, and I found myself wondering what it would sound like at the beginning too.

Just some ideas.  I loved it... great stuff.

Thanks Phil for the list of specifics. I've spent the last 2 nights working on harmonies for the 2nd and 3rd choruses.  I'd like to try some B3 in place of the more 80s sounding keys currently in the mix as well. Hope to have something new posted after this weekend!
