New Pro Audio 9 User - unable to get sound

I am unable to get sound output on the Cakewalk Programme having tried all compatibility options. System is XP Pro and sound is Sigma Tel HD Audio CODEC. On cakewalk options/Audio/General, Playback Timing Master and Record Timing Master options show "None". Can anyone help please?
