New Project
When I open Sonar Platinum, and click new project, I'm getting an empty screen. I can click recent projects and existing projects and they open. I just did an update today ... any advice? I was also moving some files around from windows C to windows D ... not sure if I've messed something up. Suggestions pls

The new project uses the default template. IT may be that Sonar can't find the template if you have moved stuff around without telling Sonar where it has moved to. The templates are stored in ..\Cakewalk Content\ by default. If you moved that directory that could be the issue.
Splat, Win 10 64bit and all sorts of musical odds and sods collected over the years, but still missing a lot of my old analogue stuff I sold off years ago.

Either put your templates back where you found them, or open SONAR, press "P" on your keyboard to open Preferences, go to File|Folder Locations, and type in or navigate to the new path to your templates.

Adding to this same question, how can you have Sonar replace or recompile the templates?

I don't understand templates and how to put them back where I found them as suggested. There's no Cakewalk call centre to get assistance so I'm thinking about re-installing sonar plat. Is that easy to do? Basically I moved the cakewalk content from windows "C" to windows "D" data because windows C was almost full now can't open a new project. So I copied and pasted from D back to C hoping that would put things back to the way it was and still can't open a new project. So now I think my best option is to just re-install and start over. Hoping that's not too much hassle ... damn ...

Don't forget, you can make your own templates.. I never use the defualts. I've always rollwed my own. So instead of wasting time trying to sort out where it went.. make a template and save it as such and where you want it to be.

In Sonar start a new project. Add what you want to it as far as audio tracks or Midi trks. Set all your options the way you want or leave them as is. Go to File/Save As and it will bring you to a new window. There you can choose what to save you project as in the 'Save As Type" feild under the name you will give it. Template should be the second choice. Then choose where you will save the file. I would do as Larry suggests and direct Sonar to find this file you just made in the 'Templates' field

Use the Command Center Settings Path tab to move "Cakewalk Content" or create a directory junction on the C: drive pointing to the new location (I prefer to use junctions). Assuming the new location is "D:\Cakewalk Content" to create the junction on Win8.1 and older open a command window as administrator and type: mklink /j "C:\Cakewalk Content" "D:\Cakewalk Content" on Win10 open a powershell window as administrator and type: New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:\Cakewalk Content" -Value "D:\Cakewalk Content" Note: with either command "C:\Cakewalk Content" must NOT exist and "D:\Cakewalk Content" must exist BEFORE creating the junction.

Scook ... I've opened the command centre path settings .... there's 2 choices ... download path and content path ... I've changed the content path to D:/Cakewalk Content ... and left the download path as is ... I'm somewhat lost at how to do the next part ... How to "open a powershell window as admin ... unclear at how to do that ... and creating a junction ... don't know how to do that either ...

If you changed "Cakewalk Content" using the Command Center there is no need to create a directory junction. The Command Center should make all the appropriate changes to your setup. You can verify this by looking in SONAR Preferences > File > Folder Locations.

Jeff - I wrote the post below while you and scook were chatting, so it's probably no longer relevant. Hope you got it working. I still think you should have gone into Preferences and told SONAR the new location of the templates. I get it that you're not familiar with Windows file structure, but that's the most straightforward solution, so let me know if you still want to try that route. I don't know for sure, but while reinstalling might solve your problem, it also might not if you don't completely remove SONAR first, because the installer might look for existing locations. Someone more knowledgeable than I can advise you on that. It's OK to move files around, but when you do you have to let SONAR know where you put them. That's why I suggested you open Preferences, go to File|Folder Locations, and tell SONAR where the files are. If all you did was drag the "Content" folder from the C: drive to the D: drive, this might have been as easy as changing that single drive letter in the Folder Locations dialog. But wherever your templates are now, it's possible to find them, and once you do, make the change in Folder Locations and you're good to go. Another cheap shortcut you could try, if you can still open existing projects, would be to open one, preferably one you like and that used one of the "lost" templates, delete all the data -- not the tracks themselves, but the stuff in them -- and then save that as a template. Give it a name, and it will show up in your Start Menu when you open SONAR, and you can use it to create new projects.

I tried the changes suggested by Scook ... and thanks Scook. Still stumped because can't open a new project. Larry Jones ... I have gone to File/Folder locations and did change the default folder locations as well as in the Cakewalk Command Center Content Path so they are the same. They are now showing D:Cakewalk Content for folder locations. I might try the cheap shortcut idea ... might try that tomorrow and give you an update ... o/o for now ... gonna give it a rest ... lol ... thanks

I thought you moved your files back to the C: drive. Need to be sure where they are, then correct the path.

I did move the files back to the C drive ... from D (after originally moving C to D). Actually the files are now both in C and D. Not sure if that matters or not. What you mean by "correct the path" and how to do that?

Go to Preferences by pressing " P" while in Sonar. Or while in Sonar go to the top right below the Title Bar and select Edit/Preferences. Once in Preferences, look to the left and you will see Audio, Midi, File Select File/Folder Locations. Then look to the right and the second one down is called ' Templates' that's where Sonar is looking for the Templates. If they are not in the location shown, press that button with the ... on the right of the path location and browse for the folder where you put the Template files. Good luck!

Jeff - As you can see in this image, the path to your templates might be more than just "Cakewalk Content." Try "D:\Cakewalk Content\SONAR Platinum\Project Templates" (without the quotes). Then see if you can open a new project. You might have to close and restart SONAR. If that didn't work, you have to find those templates. Go back to Preferences|File|Folder Locations and on the right side of the Templates line click the "Browse" button (note: it's the button with "..." on it). You'll see standard Windows file dialog, and your job is to search for the correct "Project Templates" folder and select it, then click "OK." Let us know if this gets you back up. Note that you might have to go down that whole list of locations in "Preferences" and repeat this process.
