New Project - "Earthman"
I am embarking on mixing a piece of music we have been working of for a good while and which was tracked over the winter. It is an amalgam of Rock and Classical of which this is the first layer of the classical part. This is a collection of the orchestral sections, strings only. It was created by combining sampled instalments using NI Kontakt Player with real recordings tracked separately and then combined to create a full orchestral sound. Woodwind and brass will be added next. The score is an original written by Chris Watson. I hope you find it interesting http://soundcloud.com/stuartbroughton/earthman-v7a-strings

Had zero comments on this, feels a bit strange. Has no one anything to say about it????

Hi Stuart, I wonder if the lack of comments are because of the way you've presented it, i.e. just the strings, with the other instruments missing - it makes for an odd listening experience. Having said that, the strings sound excellent, and the score is beautiful. I'd love to hear the full version.

Yeh, that maybe true James. The idea was to post it as a work in progress and hopefully get tips on the way. i had some great help on the songs i previously posted so was hoping for some of the same again. Maybe i hear it differently because i can hear the other parts in my head where obviously no one else has that advantage. I was pleased with the sound i was getting on the strings so i thought i would share it. Edit: Some one needs to let me know if this is not the place for WIP, just finished songs. It says songs and projects on the forum index. Shame if it isn't

Stuart, I don't know how I missed this gem. My computer was down for a few days last week, so maybe then. Anyway, just the strings alone are beautiful. The arrangement is so well done that it would fool a lot of people into thinking this was real. No easy feat. No crits here. Like you said, I hope this forum isn't just for finished songs. Works in progress are some of the most interesting submissions here, at times. There's a lot of room to grow in your piece because your foundation is solid. Please let us hear the final version when you're finished.

Hi Stewart, I agree with James, I think it's a little "different" listening to just the orchestral part, especially with gaps between the sections. the orchestration here is absolutely phenomenol, but it lacks cohesion as it is, which, I'm sure you know since you already know this is just part of the proiject. it's just difficult for me, anyway, to get my head around what it's trying to "tell me" without the rest of it. I'll be really interested in hearing this when it's finished - I'm sure it will be a real "work of art."

A little over 7 minutes of droning strings in several random sections. Lovely.

At least we can agree on this James, dickhead Pete your a disgusting individual. Piss off, Stuarts work is of the highest quality. You obviously didn't hear Alone. One of the best tracks this forum has ever heard IMHO. Hey Stuart, after our private chat, I'm even more impressed, real strings combined with NI strings if I read you correctly. I'm looking forward to hearing the next parts of the track. Ignore dip**** Pete, we as a forum and as a group will find a way to deal with this hillbilly pig ****er. Sorry for the strong language folks. Peace Ben

technically and execution-wise it's excellent. kinda genius in fact. i love it. i imagine the gaps between movements will be developed w/ other instruments so looking forward to hearing this sculpture as it gestates. also don't read into anything people say here more than necessary. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. if you like it, well, that's the only opinion that really matters. i kinda find pistolpete's irreverence rather funny & adds color to the forum. his lack of filter allows him to say things sometimes from a Howard Stern-esque angle, things that most polite people would not type despite thinking the same. i don't agree with him here, but even while trolling he is still listening to musicians' music, so one has succeeded in increasing one's listening audience, which is the goal of any real art. what people think is of no consequence. negative publicity is still attention, and many times it's a masked compliment that belies the envelope delivered in.

Thanks for all you comments. Am happy with a cross section of opinions, even Pistolpete's. Although its a shame he didn't like it, Hillbilly pig****ers was one of our target audiences!! I have added the rest of the orchestral parts now and it is sounding good, but perhaps needs a bit of thinning out to make sure the strings dont loose their impact. I am having an editing session with Chris tomorrow so hopefully will be able to post an update after that.

Hi Stuart! The strings are sounding really good. With the rest of the orchestral parts coming up, the piece should sound cohesive as well. The sound is really big and that is where you have scored. Looking forward to the next step.
