New Pugtones Tune "Raindance" Remix 11-25-14

Well, this is our first new song in over a year. Mark sent the music and the name "Raindance".  From there I channeled my inner Cherokee.  It didn't start that way but as the song went on it ended up that way.  It took me forever because I couldn't come up with a straight through theme.  The vocals are pieced together with ideas coming slowly.  So, was I really there with my Grandpa.  No, but I think my Dad probably was.   I hope you enjoy it.  Mark did some nice stuff in this one. Thanks for listening and commenting.

MARK REMIXED THIS AS PER SOME OF THE SUGGESTIONS.  i PUT IT ON BOX SO YOU COULD HEAR THE .WAV FILE

Quality, not quantity, eh?

I am reminded of a joke my Dad used to tell...three guys sitting at the bar, two looking sullen. Bartender says "what's got you down?" First guy: my wife and I have been married for two years now and we only have sex once a week these days. Second guy: fft, I've been married 20 years and we only dance once a month. The third guy just smiles. So how about you, they ask him. He says "Oh, I only get sex once a year". So why are you smiling, they ask. He replies "tonight's the night".

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

dig it.

and i got cherokee in me too, warren...
i dig the atmospheric vibe.....
and i also like the way the lyric happens...

that is a method of writing i use as well, sometimes....
it's funny how it works, when you start out thinking it will go one way,
but ends up exactly where it ends up no matter how hard you try to mess it up!
LOL

at least, that's my story.

mix:
i'd like to hear a little more presence or upper mid on the bass guitar...
it's a nice smooth low end, but is just a touch mushy.

also, i'd like to hear a little more high end across the whole thing....
there needs to be a little sibilence (or at least that area of high end) on the voice,
to make the words a little more intelligible

Mark, Warren I enjoyed that very pleasant listen, Gonzo's makes some good points but I like it as it stands.

Dave- Chuckle on he joke.  Thanks for listening.  I think your comment was a compliment.

Rob- Thanks for the listen.  It's good to know I'm not the only one who gets bogged and sloshes out of it!  I'm sure Mark is taking notes on the production side.  Thanks, buddy.

Really good songwriting balanced with good performances.  The arrangement is nice and allows for the terrific vocal textures and spacing throughout.  I loved the lyrics and mood of this song.  The guitar solo against the thunder was very cool, to say the least.  I, too, think this mix could use just a dab of 5700hz with a wide Q, but that's just like trying to decide whether to add more salt or sugar.  Great job, gentlemen!

All the best,
Lynn

Very good performances. Melody was also splendid. Thunder sounds were a bit disturbing although I understood that it was kind of essential to the song. Mix was good imo. Overall 4.5/5 stars.

"Thunder sounds were a bit disturbing although I understood that it was kind of essential to the song." Not true, it could be used in the intro, to set the stage, and at the very end on the outro. I like sound FX in songs, but people always tell me NOT to use them. I think they may be over used here Warren.

The song is good and seems well produced otherwise. Good job overall.

NO Warren do not do it, you just know you will regret it, besides you would have to make it a regular expense this would limit your GAS impulses.

OK guys - leave my thunder and rain sounds alone - they are off-limits here.  ;-D

I appreciate all the comments - thanks all for taking the time to listen and comments. I actually think the sound effects are important to they theme of this song. We did another version of this tune with a different bridge - normal lead, that kind of thing. It just didn't sound nearly as good as this. So, the thunder and rain stay.

And if I hear anymore negative comments about the sound effects - I might just turn them up a bit.  ;-D

Thanks again, all of you for taking a listen. Take care.

Lynn- I'll take the salt but don't tell my doctor!  Thanks, Lynn.  Very nice comments and we appreciate them.

Kakku- Thanks for listening.  That thunder wasn't in the original and the lead was 8 bars.  Mark added that and 24 more bars of lead.  Really changed the mood.  Thanks for commenting.

Jablow-  Ha, so Mark is leaving the thunder.   i do have to say that the first time I heard it after he added it I was kinda in the same mindset.  After the second listen I realized it subdued my vocals a bit and what could be wrong with that?    Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

I thought this was excellent. As Lynn pointed out, the guitar solo against the background of thunder was perfect. The whole thing gave me a CSNY vibe, but more modern. Well done!

Killer track. Such an awesome mood to this. And that guitar solo part was great. Also, normally I'm kind of anti-soundfx but the thunder really just worked great with everything else... And if it works, it works :-)

Dan comment nailed it for me as well....I felt the CSNY/modern vibe...you guys really put together a haunting beast here. I think the thunder boomers were fine and only added to the tune. The vox performance and mix were great...the guitar work was perfect for the tune in that the tones and long haunting notes seem to call me to the storm. This really painted a full and very cool picture in my mind and told a great story.

only one question...

will we have to wait another ****ing year for awesome Pugtones tune?...I'm gettin old boys...dont leave me hangin!! :)

Great job and sooo glad to see you two working together again!

Warren/Mark:
Wow, this one really goes there.  it has a huge presence and the vocals really shine.  I like how it kinda veers off into strange place before coming back to the theme and vox from the beginning...all good in my book.  Nice guitars, bass and all sits well in the mix on my system.  Nice work and congrats on your first song in a while.  Rock on!

PBear-  Thanks for listening and the comments.  We appreciate it.

DaPogue-  Wow, thanks!  Those are some very kind comments.  The Pugtones are working on a Christmas song that will feature my sister, Eva on vocals.  It's been a long time since she sang one for us.  She's visiting us in Phoenix for Thanksgiving and I hope to get the vocals recorded Tgiving day.  Thanks for asking!!

Reece- Well, we appreciate your comments.  I'm really glad that you liked it!  Thanks.

Tony- I'm glad you listened, Tony.  We really appreciate it and your kind comments.  We're ready for another DT tune!  See if you can get Tom away from the Korean food and back into the studio!

Hey, Warren and Mark,

Great song and excellent songwriting and performances by both of you, as always!

Wonderful, meaningful lyrics, and I love Warren's rich sounding vocals and lush harmonies over the warm guitars and Mark's tasty smooth solos. The song is sort of giving me a mid 70's "Orleans" or "Little River Band" vibe that I remember and really like.

Fantastic work, boys, The Pugtones never disappoint!

Have a good one!

Hey guys, sorry I haven't got chance to listen till now.  Wow, shades of Jefferson Airplane, a little Willie Nelson...maybe too.  Impressive, I love this sort of 60's rock.

Yea mix is a little annoying,  I'm not sure what the problem is, I would need to fire box up and not listen through crappy laptop headphone amp.

But really well job, enjoyed that.

Bass seems muddy and a bit too loud to my ears. Drums are bit lost.
(I didn't read any comments so I'm sorry if I'm doubling up).

I heard a stutter (in the guitar) in the beginning. Not sure if it was intentional.

Over all good tune though.

Ben- I just left your airport and I don't think I'll be the same again.  Thanks for listening and the nice comments!

Ed- Well, I can't hear a stutter and I think that we both have our ideas of how the bass should sound.  The Pugtones on nthis tune are guitar, drums and bass trying to fill a sound canvas using harmonies also.  Our parts would be more present. If you recall I have said in the past that your bass on some tunes was a bit too trebly and quiet so I think it's just what we want to hear which really makes sense, right?.  I appreciate you listening and commenting.

Maybe the stutter was connection related on my side.

Terrific storytelling and I think the tempo adds to the aura, a nice relaxed pace. Mark I've long liked your guitar tones, and, in fact, I was thinking of you when I did the guitars on my most recent tune, Selfie. Good job fellas, a fun tune.

A few guitars, a couple of basses, a MIDI controller, a mandolin, a banjo, a mic, PodFarm2
