New Sampletekk Black

I just got a scattergram from Per at Sampletekk. They have released a new piano.

SampleTekk Black.
This is the first in our new serie of pianos powered by Kontakt, meaning that
you can use the free Kontakt Player, no other external sampler needed!
$99 for a Kontakt player instrument is a good price, a not inconsiderable proportion of that will be going to NI for the licensing. From a selfish perspective I would have preferred a cheaper version requiring the full version of Kontakt.

As much as I like the Sampletekk pianos it would be nice to see the interfaces brought up to date. The sheer number of NKI and NKM files on some of them can be a tad confusing.

A couple of open questions

I am wondering if this uses the same samples as the previous Black Grand, both are a Steinway D. If it is, and it includes all three prespectives its cheaper than the original.

Will it work in Kontakt 4? - Kontakt 5 player works but it is not supported on my Vista system.

Sounds like the same sample set w/ some added features, e.g., resonance. Listen to the original BG close demo #2 and the new demo #2... the new one is actually muddy in comparison(!), but you can key off of certain notes to hear that they appear to be the same samples... curious what perspective mix control is available, if any...

There is more info on the site including a picture of the interface and you can now download the manual. - here

    Controls seem to be.

    Velocity Curves
    EQ
    Convolution reverb.
Pedal settings for Sustain, Sostenuto and Una Chorda with half pedaling and Midi Learn
    Shimmer, sympathetic resonance and room.
Level controls for hammer and pedal noise.

IF this uses the same samples, and other Pianos are going to be up dated it would be good if existing owners got a upgrade discount, but having bought the originals so cheaply that could be asking too much.

I got an email from Sampletekk today that's clear these samples are based on the Black Grand. $99 still isn't bad for the three perspectives, but I'm inclined to wait for one of the sales to try it out.

    Hi

    Per from SampleTekk here.
The Black does have some samples from the Black Grand pool. All of those samples have been refined using technology that wasn't available when we recorded the Black Grand.
It also usdes a lot of new samples that we call "True Resonance". We have developed a way of recording, that uses both custom hardwareand software, resonances from the piano without actually having the note that starts the resonances present. This means that we can make things like true pedalling, half pedalling and Sympathetic Resonances in a very natural way.
We have also spent a lot of time building the script software that controls the pianos behaviour. This together with the fact that we have included a license to the Kontakt Player makes this a product that should be looked upon as a new product.

About the demos: Some ofthe demos have a slilght EQ on it, so it might sound a bit more dull. That was a stupid idea, and I'll make new ones. Demos 4-6 are EQ free though!
