New Song - Drumatic Duo
My newest song project with Poly. It started out as an experiment having real acoustic drums for the first half and switching to digital drums for the back half, so listen close for the switch! The song is titled "Drumatic Duo" for both the half acoustic half digital drums aspect, and that it's Poly and I making all this noise. https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13694701

Thanks James. Initially it was a test to see how close I could match up the sound of my acoustic drums with Superior Drummer and V-Drums. I recorded the acoustic drums to a click, and then jumped right on the V-Drums and recorded that track. I wanted to have recordings that were played with the same force and feel but on two different drum kits so I could try to get them sounding alike. After playing around with it, and getting the switch of drums to be pretty subtle, I started adding other parts and it morphed into this song.

eph221 Drums sounded cool.
Thanks David. I just started using acoustic drums again after close to thirty years of using digital drums exclusively for recording. Thought it would be fun to hear both playing back to back, and maybe get me to improve both by hearing the differences.

Thanks Markus. Playing is what it's all about for me. Recording is just another reason to play, and I get to switch instruments when recording.

Thanks Bill. I'm getting both the acoustic and digital drums more dialed in from this musical experiment. I've already found a snare in Superior that I think sounds closer to my real acoustic snare, and have made several tweaks on the acoustic drums setup based on some differences I noticed by having both in this project.

Thanks Hugh! Yeah, the real drums beat the digital drums big time. That was one of the things I wanted to do this song for. To hear both in the same song, where it would be real obvious what the strengths and weaknesses are with both kits of drums. This song made me realize that I don't like that Ludwig Black Beauty snare I was using in Superior Drummer 2 as much as I thought I liked it. Because of this song, I went searching through all the 30 or more different snare drums I have in all the expansion libraries for Superior, and found this one that I like better. It's a 1964 Ludwig wooden snare from the "Roots" expansion pack for Superior Drummer 2. https://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13695373

Have you tried getting a sampler and sampling your own drums?

Glenn, this is a terrific piece, and I really like that progression. The mix sounds good on both my speakers and headphones. Can't wait for more.

It has crossed my mind. I used to own a cocktail drum kit, and I sampled it several years ago, but I only did simple one shot samples for it. If I were to try and sample my Ludwig kit, I would want to do it up right with multi-samples of varying velocity, and setup round-robins so the samples get rotated and not play the same one repeatedly. I recently bought the full version of Kontakt, so I now have something I could use to create a pretty cool set of samples for. Finding the time to invest in doing it is the biggest issue I really have.

Thanks Lynn! I learned a lot from doing this song, and hopefully it will improve the sound of both the acoustic and digital drums I use in the future.
