New Song - Fall in the Air

My latest song. This one features the 1934 Gibson acoustic guitar my dad and uncle played in the 30s as kids. I also exclusively used my cocktail drum kit for the drums. Yesterday was the day that you could tell Fall was right around the corner, so while I was in a mood, I wrote this song. It's titled "Fall in the Air" at: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11020835

Edit: this forum software is total trash!

Maybe some freeking html stuff will do something???

Thanks Tom! :-) I'm on the third mix now, and made a CD for the ride to work in the morning. My car stereo is like my ultra sound lab, coz when stuff sounds good in the car, you know the mix is right! ;)

WOW - where did you get that B3 sound? Beyond that fantastic sound, I must say I'm impressed with the depth of field you have in this mix. All the instruments seem so full-bodied and they come through clear. I haven't yet figured out how to preserve the full EQ spectrum on instruments in a busy mix without everything stepping on everything else. Well done - I could learn a lot from your mixes. - Paul

I'll say it again. THIS FORUM SOFTWARE SUCKS!!! I'm having to insert my own HTML commands, like to get the messages to format and having to do my own quoting, coz that's totally broken. Ok, enough rant about the Micky Mouse forum software.

    Thanks Paul! :)

The B3 sound on this is the first generation Native Instruments B4 Organ, which is a pretty good simulation IMO. I'm still tweaking out the mix, and will probably do a final by the weekend.

Definitely a Big B3 there :-) The only thing that really stuck out to me was that the hihat/cymbals seemed a little overly crispy. Or maybe just mixed a little hot. Down lowere that would probably keep them cutting through but more balanced out perhaps. It might just be these speakers though.

It's a nice song and would have not been out of place on a 70s album I would think.

The drums on this are my acoustic cocktail drum kit, which has the hihat right over the snare mic, which is where I think the extra hihat volume is coming from.

Here's a pic of the kit that was used on this song.

That's a funky looking kit. So it's just three toms?

Two toms, the larger of which is also the bass drum being kicked from below.
The smallest drum is an 8" snare, which has the SM58 on it below the hihat.

Thanks Tom! I've been tweaking that drumset a lot lately. Just a week ago I converted one of my DW5000 kick pedals to work backward and kick upward so I could use it with this kit. Matches the hihat now too! :)

    Thanks Grant! :)

I normally use a pad kit of V-Drums with Superior Drummer 2, but I've been recently tweaking my cocktail kit and decided to put four mics on it and use it on this song.

That old Native Instruments B4 Organ does a really good job of emulating a B3 and Leslie, and it's not even sampled, but a computer model of the real thing.
