New Song: Higher Power (The continuing degredation of Leonard)
Hey, I've got a new tune. Please suggest at will and any comments on how to improve direct guitars would be appreciated. I'm still working on a better vocal tone as well.... suggestions? The song is about Leonard, formerly abducted by aliens, who finds himself getting attracted to using religion as an excuse to embrace insanity. He finds an abandoned bible and struggles with it's contents. Weird, I know, but I drank too much cough syrup the night I wrote it. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=805324&songID=10795073 Al

This seems to work quite well, I listened to the end which is always a good sign. I am sure some others will comment on anything they notice. Thanks for sharing.

Wook, Thanks man. I know I've cut some things short when listening so I consider it a compliment that you took it all the way. Gonna try to jazz it up some other time when time isn't an issue.

I really enjoyed the feel of it.Wonderful vocals.I think though, that the rhythm guitar needs to be pulled to the front a little more. Its just a little to far away for me. I think that would give it a little more fullness.Other than that I love it :)

I have no taste, less talent and cloth ears, so don't take this as high praise. I loved the concept, the performance, and the production. I think that the sound of the crash symbols has a problem from about 1:47-2:09 and again at 4:12-4:32. Just not clear enough and kindof flat sounding. I think that the drums could have a little more punch, but that could just be the speakers I'm listening on.

Ah, like a child of Neil Young ... everything about this is really good – lyrics, groove and performance. I find it a bit bass heavy – everything else seems in balance. Very pro-sound as well– the lyrics, melody and chords are very well put together. One of the nicest things I’ve heard on the site and I’ve been around for a while.

Hi Al. This is a great groove. I personally would treat the vocals differently but that's me. Nice mix.

Ur- I know what you're saying about the guitars. I've posted a request, in the techinques section, for suggestions on how to get the guitar to sound better. I think I've pulled back the guit because I don't like it. If I get a good bit of advice I'll re-record the rythm and push it up. Gcolbert - I actually pulled back the highs on those crashes.... maybe a bit too much but I did the drums with Reason and couldn't, for the life of me, find a short crash. I had to make one and didn't get it quite right. I'll dial it up a bit and see what happens. Manny - Thanks for the props. I'm mixing on a set of smaller Studiophile monitors that are a bit weak on the low end. This is causing a bit of low end push. I thought the same thing so I'm going to try to clarify it and bring it back a bit. Paul - Thanks. Do you have any suggestions for vox treatment? I've always struggled with this and any thoughts would be welcome. I have a lead track with two cloned. One clone is pitch shifted up .08 percent and the other is .08 down. These are pulled back in the mix and just used to smooth out the sound a bit. These are bussed and compressed fairly heavy with delay and room verb after compression. Like I said..... I struggle with trying to find the "sound" al

EXCELLENT tune! I like the tones of the guitar kind of a classic GOLDEN EARRING vibe. Mix sounds great on my end. I'm with GCOLBERT, the crash cymbals during the chrous could be pushed back in the mix a smidge. Your vocals/harmonies and chops on the guitar are killer. You really have a very well written and performed piece. KUDOS! Kev

Really great. The groove is infectious. I must tell you though, something happened to my interest level at around 3:09 so i stopped listening. I might be that the breakdown a little before hand disconnected me. I liked the break but, just saying. I also thought the vocs could come up a bit.

Timidi: Thanks and I know what you're talking about after the breakdown. This was kind of copy/paste and should include more interest. I've had some advice on amp sims so I'll try to put in something interesting after playing a bit with Acme Bar Gig. As for the vox, this is pretty typical for me and I find that I have to bring them up after the first mix. Could be my smaller monitor accentuating the mids? Kev: Thanks dude. I'm going to work on the cymbals to mix them in better. Golden Earring huh? Haven't heard that one in a while but a great band back in the day!
