New Song: The Book of Regret

OK, I finally got another one out. This one is a HUGE step forward for me in terms of sonics, and vibe, and energy, though it's never anything like perfect. I decided this time to go for a straightforward pop-rocky song, instead of my more Floydian type of thing. Though, I couldn't resist putting fairly wrist cutting lyrics to it.

As always with my stuff, judge it on what it is, which is non-modern. There's nothing on the master bus. The only compression in the mix is on the snare and toms, everything else was committed during tracking. There's no pitch correction, no timing correction, no sample replacement. A little volume and f/x send level automation is used. Mostly the mix is just EQ where I didn't quite foresee where it was going to go so I tracked some of the first stuff non-optimally frequency-wise. The only ambience added was some reverb on the main vocal, and a chorus/delay bus that a few things are sent to, but mostly it was also committed during tracking.

Also, as always, it's not mixed to sound loud, it's mixed to sound good played loud, or that's the goal anyway. So crank it up nice and loud and let me know if I got it right. There's a pretty slammin bass/guitar/kick mixture during the choruses, and particularly the outro chorus.

The Soundcloud processing didn't do it any favors but it's not completely horrible. I may post the lossless WMA, because this one really benefits from full resolution.
[EDIT: Based on fedback, this is a V2 version, so the first 12 posts are about the old one]

    Hi Droddey,
I like the sound and mix alot.  Good job on the tune overall.  I also like the very simplistic recording approach you took.  Keep it up.

Great tune, nice mix. My only comment FWIW is I had to strain a little to hear the vocals. Thought they could come up a pube.

On the vocals I was kind of trying to emulate a Smashing Pumpkins type of vibe, where often the vocals are struggling to stay above water a bit, particularly in the heavier parts. And also as you crank it up louder, the vocals always become more prominent, and since it's designed to be played loud, I wanted to be sure that they wouldn't end up a mile out front at a nice, manly volume.

I like the mix/feel on the whole but agree that the vox could come up a little and still be where you're aiming for.

Pop rock...? no..... I don't think so.

I still hear more Floyd in there, but I like it.

Nice job on the song.... the production is good.

+1 on bump the vox a db or two.

    Thumbs up from me.

OK, yeh, I guess by most folk's standard that wouldn't be pop rock necessarily :-) It kind of is by mine. Anything less than 6 minutes long, ya know?

Nice to hear you post another tune Dean!. What I really liked was that creative guitar solo. It had that good kind of 'different' that was refreshing to hear. Fit this song. Thanks for describing your mixing process as well.  I'll have to give this another listen fairly cranked up when I'm allowed.....

Nice work Dean. Love the intro. And what Larry said about the solo thing. I agree. I think the voc sits uust fine.
My only nit would be that the timbre of the voc was a little irratating. Very spiky in the high-mids. I am listening on a laptop so take that into consideration. But, I think a gentle slope cut in the 3-4k region might improve it.
All in all though, real nice tune and performances.

I'm a sucker for vibrato on guitar, and this has a nice one on it. Vocals bloom nicely at volume. Drums are placed nicely, and give nice spread on the fills. The rhythm guitar competes a little with the vocal in spots, but not too bad.  Nice work Dean.

OK, so based on feedback, I updated the first post with a V2 version. Is this one working better? Vocals are up, snare is up, some adjustment of the EQ on various parts, changed the intro to not limit the level of the rest of the song quite as much, and a few other tweaks.

    Intro was great.

Vocals had both a difficult time getting thru, and TBH kinda never went anywhere, not a lot of dynamics to really key the listener in on the verse vs the chorus.

This is really good. I think the vocals sit fine in the mix for the style song it is. Guitars sound great.

    Thanks!

Now of course I'm in post-partum depression period. You work on these things so hard for so long, and then it's done and you are back at the bottom of the big mountain, and the mountain never gets any smaller (because there's no actual top, so no matter how much you might work your base camp up the side, the top is still basically the same distance away.) The distance from where you started to where you are is always a small faction of the distance between where you are and where you want to be.

Nice production.  The guitar solo wasn't predictable which appeals to me.  The vocal was loud enough for my taste, but the off pitch notes bothered me.  You can get by with a few notes off the mark, but if I were your producer, I would have the vocalist resing it or use a pitch correction program to finesse it.  I rarely advocate pitch correction, but V-Vocal could easily handle this.  Other than that, it's fun to listen to, and I'll give it another spin.

    All the best,
