New Song: The City Lights

Here's a recording I finished over the weekend using Sonar 8.5 PE   My primary microphone (for vocals, sax and acoustic guitar) was an APEX 460 Tube Condenser.  I also used True Pianos.

Thanks in advance for any feedback or comments.

You have an excellent written tune but I'm getting some sort of noise artifact on the track, like a bad cable or something.

Is your room your recording in been sound treated?  Studio foam?

I hear something on the vocal track that sounds a little brittle.   Do you have any plugin's on the track?

But aside from some mix issues, this is really a nice tune and arrangement and well worth some tweaking.

Thanks for listening and commenting! I do have my room treated with corner bass traps, sound clouds, and panels.  (Rockwool and OC703)

I used some compression from the vintage channel plug on the vocal.  I was going for a certain type of effect on the vocals - so I am not sure if that's what you're referring to.

Hi Marwood,  interesting song, took me a few times to listen but I'm liking this more and more. On the first listen I thought the pause between the phrases were much to long, maybe have some of that street noise from the intro in the now very silent bits. Vocal effect is a bit strange and distorted listening on my headphones, maybe tone that down a little bit. I don't like the sound of the guitar. It sounds very thin and somehow there is a strange flutter in the sound and it could use a little bit of reverb imho. Like the sound of that sax.

    Greetings, Rik

I like morenoise's suggestion about the pauses...City sounds...Could be interesting...

I second the vocal effects being too dramatic.

    I like the sax...

    Song has potential!

I concur with all comments above.  The vox effects people are referring to -- is it some sort of chorus/phaser?  I'm not sure it suits the sparse nature of the song, certainly at the start.  But, as always, these things are all personal!

Perhaps the guitar 'thinness' Rik refers to might be thickened by recording the guitar twice (or four times) and sending each recording 100% L and R (and perhaps 50% L/R as well if there's four).  You'd need to keep it really tight in such an open, sparse arrangement, but it might work.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!

I will have to play around with the vocals - and guitar in the mix.  The main thing I am trying to do is create a certain "mood" for the piece.

The pauses in the song are also there for the mood ("dramatic effect")  though I am intrigued by the suggestions about adding the street noise -  I will have to play around with that.

    Thanks again!
