I love that organ. I actually love all organs...if I can find a way to work an organ into a mix I always do. :) LYNN! You've proven to me again that I want to write & record a song with you. I want to do a blues stomp...I think it would absolutely kill. as a producer there's too much going on for me to know what to concentrate on; but my ears pick out the organ as one of my favorite instrumental parts. And I love the way you're singing this - your solo is not to be missed but you left me wanting more! I think if you threw some fills in there the monotony of the 5/4 time would not stand out so much and one BIG stop followed by "OH MY LORD" 2, 3,4 1-measure fill - lead. that's what I would do then bring it back to a chorus. How's about getting together this week?

Hey Joshua, I'd love to rendezvous this week. The organ sound is actually Lounge Lizard doing a dirty Wurly kind of sound. I love organs and electric pianos very much, though I'm not a keyboardist by nature. Your arrangement idea is cool sounding and something to put on my list. First, though, I will probably take a swing at your song. It looks like a promising week coming up.

Lynn Thank you very much, Ben. It's always good to hear good things from you because you have discriminating taste. The ProChannel of the X series is seriously vintage. I never had stuff this good even in the 70's. As for the bottom end, I can only thank all of the people who have helped with this for guiding me in the right direction. It is a pentatonic blues riff, I believe, with the occasional ninth.
Yea I am getting better with this aural crap lol, yep could not agree more about Pro Channel stuff...simply amazing. We never had it so good, now if only the young-ins would learn how to use it properly...NO PRESETS, and pressing a button DOES not make you a musician. Ben

Lynn, Wow, I like everything about this one. It really grooves and I was hooked right off the bat (no pun intended). The stereo field on this one is really cool too. I could hear that steady key part that runs through most of the song just slightly to the right of my left speaker and the vox right up in the middle of space. Everything came through loud and clear. The drums sounded good too. Nice treatment on the vox. You got a winner here.

Mark and Tony, your words are very much appreciated. I learned to trust my instincts a bit on this project. It may yet get some guest vocalists in the long run, but for now I'm just looking for a solid foundation.

Great raunchy track! Sounds like the band stayed late drinkin' moonshine after recording "Quarter to Three" with Gary U.S. Bonds, turned all the faders up just a little more and let it roll. Thumbs up.

Last week, my new friend, Joshua Barnes (aka-Ruralrocker) dropped by my studio and gave me some valuable suggestions for this song. I took his advice and rearranged this and here are the results: http://www.soundclick.com...hi&songID=12979364 He suggested that the guitar play between the lead vocal lines rather than all the way through, so I made that change in the first two verses. He also suggested that I drop some instruments going into the guitar solo after the first chorus, and I made that change. I also incorporated some minor changes suggested by others, as well. The original mix can still be found in post #1, but I'm growing fond of this version. What do you think? Thank you all for your great responses.

I love this! I like the sort fun-yet-frantic vibe overall, it feels like there's true desperation, made better with good lyrical contrast.

Very very very cool Lynn. If it were me I'd give the bass a little more bottom or give the kick more bottom. They seem like they are both ducking each other. Just a personal taste thing because the toon is too cool.

Dave, thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you caught the mood of this song. Actually, it's a tongue-in-cheek story of a living situation that I'm currently involved in, not really a spiritual crisis. But, I left it ambiguous for a reason... Ed, I already updated the newer version to incorporate your ideas. Thanks for your golden ears, and I hope this is closer to what you want to hear.

Hi, Lynn, This is a really fantastic and very cool song! Well written and performed, excellent vocals and harmonies, and a tasty guitar solo that's a perfect fit for the vibe of the song. I love the Rhodes in the background and the organ part, too. My only mix suggestion would be to boost the guitar solo volume by about 1 or 2dBs to let it "pop out" of the mix a bit more. The mixing and production on both versions is really, really good, but I think I prefer Mix #2 because the arrangement is a little less busy, and it allows better focus on the vocals and the main theme of the song without too many distractions. Excellent stuff, as always, Lynn, your songs have a really cool "trademark style" that I always look forward to and really enjoy! Really nice work, buddy, have a rockin' week, my friend! Bob

Bob, thank you for taking the time to listen and comment. I think you're right about the 2nd mix and the guitar solo. I'll take care of that on the next pass. John, thank you for your time, as well. I'm happy to hear that it sounds OK on your iPad, as I took some time to make sure it sounded OK on my tablet, too.

I always zero in on the guitar playing, it fits perfect for this song. On Bob's suggestion of bumping up the lead guitar, if one does that, do other tracks have to be compensated (subtract dBs to offset increase of guitar track db), or is just adjusted with the master? Did this question make sense? Anyway, wish I had eight fingers like your guitar player has.

Thanks, Ed, for pointing me in the right direction. CapG, in this case, the guitar solo was on its own track with plenty of headroom so I just turned it up a db or two. I didn't mess with any other tracks. BTW, my guitar player (me) has 10 fingers, actually ;)

i dig it! everything that is quirky about the mix, is what i like. because it's the 'kind' of song that it is (atmospheric, jammy, vibey) all the strange fx and swirly guitars and backup voices all blend together to make a creepy lo fi vibe, totally works for me. nice job.

I dunno, Lynn, this could be my favorite song from you. It just exudes this really cool, slightly swampy vibe. The lyrics are locked in and the vocals sound great, everything is played well and the mix rocks. And who knew - blues rock in 5/4!
