New Song - The Devil's In My House (remixed and rearranged - 11/24/14)
Here's a song that I started on Halloween night while waiting for trick or treaters. It's done entirely in Sonar X3e and the first song that I used Addictive Drums 2 all the way through. I'm very open minded about this mix since it's so new, so any constructive criticism is welcome. Thanks in advance for your replies. Attn: updated at 6:35 pm CST on 11/18/14 It can be found here: http://www.soundclick.com...ngid=12968378&q=hi 11/24/14 Joshua Barnes (aka Ruralrocker) dropped by my studio the other day and offered some suggestions about the arrangement and mix. On this new version, the guitar plays between the lead vocal lines in the first two verses, rather than through them. And, he gave me a new idea for the lead-in to the guitar solo after the first bridge. I have grown fond of this version. What do you think? 11/26/14 - taking Bob Oister's suggestion, I bumped up the guitar solo a smidgen. The new mix and arrangement is here: http://www.soundclick.com...hi&songID=12979364

Do I detect a touch of Nectar Elements on the backing vox? The mix appears to translate well here though the lead vox could come up a tad or perhaps a little less reverb, but what would I know about vocals. Thanks for sharing

Hey Lynn, Kick sounds great, vocals are your usual great job. The crash cymbal on the left is distracting. It sounds disjointed, like it isn't part of the kit. I'd also bring the snare up a bit (once everything comes in) and add a tad more snap to it. Sounds like you added some distortion to the toms, which sounds fine, but they are buried in the mix. You may need to pan them more or carve out some space for them from the bass, which is where they are buried, I think. It's hard to tell from the stream @160bit. The rest of the instruments sound very good. I like the slap echo on the lead vocal, but it would be cool to hear that echo go wide, but not too loud. Lastly, that lead guitar is also buried too much. It could use a delay or motion so it stands out more. Of course, all of this is my opinion. I just hear a different, bigger mix in my head for this cool song. Regards, Dan

Wookie, you are right about the Nectar Elements. It's on one clip in the 2nd bridge to give the single backup some body. Great furry ears!

Wow. Nice classic rock vibe Lynn. Your vocals are excellent as always. I like that organ and guitar playing fits into it all well ....a scary kind of theme. I hope he never visits my house ;;;:) Anyho...it's great stuff!!!! I enjoyed the listen!

Lynn, This mix is definitely better. Lead guitar is still quite hard to hear, but the other elements are better placed and clearly audible. Good job! Regards, Dan

Cool tune. I like the groove and the timing in this. Not the "normal" meter..... which is cool. Variation on a blues theme. Yeah turn the guitar UP^^^^ Nice work.

Hey Lynn, this is great stuff! I like the meter and the feel. Guitars and organ are great. Drums are nice and prominent. The only thing I'd suggest is on the vocals. I know you've processed them heavily for the feel of the Song, but they're so muddy they blend with the guitars. I'd suggest a little EQ on them to take out the lower kids to let them punch through a rad more.
Just my opinion! No worries if you disagree!

I'm not professionally qualified to comment on the use of the technology but as a listener to all kinds of music I thought that the backing was a little loud for the vocals, just a tad but enough to make me strain a little to hear them, and that the rhythm appeared to my ears to be slightly jerky (sorry don't know the technical term) maybe a quarter or an eighth beat out, but as I said I am not qualified to judge so I am only saying as I hear.

Nice work Lynn, I would have liked the vocals more up front, and yes, a bit louder. I particularly liked the rhythm, it suited the feel of the song.

I've been out all day, and I just got back to this. I really appreciate your comments and have already incorporated many of your suggestions just moments ago. I raised the vocals and the guitar solo, boosted the lows a tad, and scooped the mids slightly. I realize that the 5/4 time signature is not the norm for this genre, but I hope that it swings regardless. The link is here: http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=12968378 Thanks, personally, to Tim, Warren, Herb, Robert, Reece, Chris, Daryl, Antti, Wayne, John, Freddy, and Tom. I'm able to make changes to this mix so quickly that it's almost like interactive mixing with all of you. If there's anything else I can do, I ready to try.

Yeah this mix is much better. Although I'm not that keen on the overly wet flange type backing vocals. Enjoyed the lead guitar parts and the trills on the chord changes are a great idea. :)

Gus, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I appreciate the comments on the guitar and piano parts. As for the bg vox, I was looking for something texturally different from the usual reverb or delay that I normally use. Kinda like-do I use cumin or chili powder? Sugar or salt? But, now I must try something different! Herbs, more herbs.

Putting those tracks together had to be fun, everything fit good and vol mix was spot on. I can't critique as well as those above because of my slow hearing ( I just made that up) and my lack of expertise. But since I can't sing period, just play the guitar, I'll say I would have liked the guitar lead in there to be a little longer (and maybe more cowbell? kidding) , it was gruffy as was the mood of the song. Very nice capg

Robert, thanks a million for your comment about the Animals. I was/am a big fan! If this song is any better, it's because of your and everyone's ears. CaptG, it's always nicer to hear "more" lead gtr than less. I did, in fact, have a lot of fun doing this song, and it's hard to believe that it's only two weeks and a day old.

Hi Lynn, sorry have been very lazy, I liked the this from the very opening refrain. The way you are able to create these fantastic sounding seventies tracks just with Sonar is amazing. The bottom end is gorgeous. I think it's a pentatonic blues riff if I am not mistaken...I love the riff no matter what. Great, Ben

Thank you very much, Ben. It's always good to hear good things from you because you have discriminating taste. The ProChannel of the X series is seriously vintage. I never had stuff this good even in the 70's. As for the bottom end, I can only thank all of the people who have helped with this for guiding me in the right direction. It is a pentatonic blues riff, I believe, with the occasional ninth.
