New Song, " All We Need"..Rock,Classic Rock

I put this song together in the studio over that last few weeks here and there as I had the time to do it.

The song is called, "We All Need", I would be interested to hear how it comes across on your systems and any other comments are welcome. Thanks for listening!!

Updated mix..... 3.23

http://soundcloud.com/starise/we-all-need    I thinned out the drums mix and made more space for the bass and drums.

Can't really comment in the mix (lappy speakers) but  fwiw  on here the percussion sounds a little weak/flimsy . I like the song though. Had a few listens and I found myself wanting you to deliver the "no man is an island line aound the 2:00 mark with a little more oomph - like you reeeaaallllllllllyyyy mean it, if that makes sense.

Thanks Paulo! Yeah , lappy speakers this mix probably looses some umph, I'll look into the range and try to spice it up a bit there in those freqs.

I have another vocal  for that chorus, but it seemed to be coming across as too aggressive lol. Maybe I can find a happy medium.

     Thanks for listening.

I really like the space in this mix. There's not much there with the drums,  but I really like how the guitar sits out there. I'd love to talk with you about how you did that...

I personally hear timing issues with the guitar.

I like the vocal. It certainly has that smokey woods feel.

I like this song, and I think it has a lot of potential.  The vocal is quite good, and I like the clean guitar sound.  As for the drums, I hear the cymbals very well, but I heard no bass nor snare.  Perhaps this is intentional?  I think this will shine with the right mix because it's pretty good now.

    All the best,

Josh- Thanks for commenting! I'm guess you mean the guitar solo? I would not be surprised if there was a timing issue there. My guitar sound was a combination of hardware and software. I used a variax feeding into an HD500 and then it went into GR for further processing.

Lynn- I'll look into the bass and drums. I fed a strong bass part into the system using Amplitube SVX on a real bass turned up all the way
up and my drums are actually doubled on the bass. I am open to any suggestions on how to pull more out of those tracks. My EQ has a boost at around 100khz for the upper bass and I'm boosting my low end at around 50hz.....so I'm not sure why it isn't coming through.

Your comments have confirmed my suspicions. I thought it was just my setup here.......back to the drawing board. Thanks to you both for the help. I may be over compressing and sucking the life from the track.

    Tim,

    Vox seem over compressed.

Drums feel to low in the mix (to me) or to far removed (like they are in another room).

Pretty good song and your vox are sung well.

I think there might be a decent tune in there, but this mix is just awful and incoherent. I have no idea what you are going for here, Tim.  Sorry.

It feels really heavy in the low mids and those guitars seem to be stepping a bit on the vox. And it feels a little distorted? I'm with Jim here, I would consider a redo? There are timing issues between the guitars as well. Did you enjoy a homemade mushroom pizza before tracking this per chance?

All you need is love, just ask the Beatles?

Bapu- Thanks for your take on the track. I think there are likely some phasing issues with my drums since I am using two drum tracks.Wanna play bass on this one? I should have asked you before. Thanks for the comments.

Josh- You can do a lot of things with the podxt too as I'm sure you already know. I'm not the least bit sorry I got the variax. A veteran player might not be totally happy with some of the tones, just like a tube purist might not be happy with Amplitube 3,but the emulations are pretty darned close.

James- Thanks for your take on this tune. I think I am getting thicker skin, don't hold back on me lol. I should have listened better to my monitors. With ARC correction they were sucking the bass out of my space, however the mix sounded good on headphones. I should have trusted my ARCed monitors more. This and some phasing issues seem to be robbing the mix.

Bandontherun- I intentionally distorted the vocal backup under the pre-chorus if that is what you mean by distorted.I'm not sure. No mushroom pizza here lol......I double tracked one guitar and maybe there are some issues there. The solo could have been a little more on I suppose. Thanks for listening.

Hopefully by the end of this week I'll pull the entire mix back and redo it. I'll repost that mix and hopefully I will be more in the ballpark then.....Thanks for listening to this!

I hear a lot of technical distortion.  I do like the directness of the sound but overall, I can't listen more than once until its cleaned up.  I like the song and vocalist.  Try your mix again.

    Hey, Tim,

Very cool classic rock song with a lot of really good potential!  Great songwriting, I really like your vocals, the guitar parts, and the nice arrangement.  I think it will definitely be worth a little extra time on the mix to make it really shine.  I'll keep my eyes open for the remix.

    Great song, nice work, Tim!

I did a lot of work on this mix. Hopefully it comes across better. I changed the chorus completely.

Rimshot- I completely removed all effects and started this back again from scratch. It's really a new mix, hopefully I'm closer to the goal now. Thanks for your comments.

Bon- Thanks for giving the mix a listen! And for your comments.

I listened to the new version very carefully because I like this tune a lot.  I like the raw quality of your voice in this.  Yet, I feel it's lacking drums and bass on my speakers.  They really need to kick in during the chorus to drive this song.  The backup vocals that come in on the word "lovin" are too loud by a hair or two.  I'm not loving the guitar part in the middle of the song so much, but if you turn the bass gtr and drums up, it would probably work better for me.  Take all this with a grain of salt, as it's just a matter of personal taste.  All in all, this song is good, and I suspect with the right mix it will be better than good.

    All the best,

Thanks Lynn and Grant.  I plan to take this up yet again from a fresh start hopefully later in the week. Don't really like the accompany vocals and I agree about the guitar....I am peaking the drums and bass at the important frequencies, but I agree it still seems to be lost in places in this mix.Better, but not there yet. Hopefully a little rest and I'll have a fresh take on it.

Not sure if others have experienced this- the mixdown track sounds different than the pre mix...some instruments come out well in the premix and are lost at mixdown??

Indeed I have. My old P4 3.2 is unreliable for to many softsynths unless I freeze them.

    hey Tim,
this is exactly what I'm feelin' here.

but I also hear the distortion on the backing vocals that someone mentioned above, too.  you've got them too hot or too much "tube distortion" on them or something.  something is distorting them.

good effort, great song, good vocal performance, mix still needs some work, IMO.
