New Song - with - BFD2
After a bit of depression, (my store got robbed a little while back), I am back to what I really love. Music! Here is a song I was mixing tonight, trying to learn BFD2. Just having some fun! This is my first mix using BFD2. I have mostly been using EZ - w/ Nashville, which I love. Sometime, I wish I could dampen a head or tighten the skins a little. In EZ it is the only thing that is not very EZ. I think BFD2 is the monster of tweakability in percussion soft synths today. S2 might be better, but we will have to wait a little longer to see. BFD2 took about a week to figure out how to do what I wanted to do. I think 1 week is a small learning curve for such power. This is a song I used BFD2 on tonight. Took a while to EQ/mix the song and a few hours to Mix and EQ the drums. Let me know what you think. BFD2 http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6592455&q=hi BFD2 remix (drums louder) http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6601414&q=hi EZ mix (15 min to convert the BFD drums to EZ-Nashville - man that was EZ!) http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6196235&q=hi Glad to be back, Max Arwood (Edit added remixes)

Hey Max, Sorry to hear of your misfortune . Glad you're past it. Good song. The drums sound good. I wouldn't mind them a tid bit louder. I like the vocals too;. not too reverby or distant. Please tell me that is a picture of you with the five stacker. Rhyno

Max, Sorry to hear about your troubles .. but glad you overcame. Nice tune, mix sounds pretty good, vocals seem a little separated from the rest of the mix, vox and the cymbals seem a little sibilant in the higher freqs. Actually, for me, the higher freqs in the various parts are kind of fighting for space and working against the gel factor. Nice parts and playing, good arrangement, some real potential here.

Geeezz Max, I know the feeling..my home was broken into twice, years ago and all my guitars were taken, some irreplaceable... You know these things always work out eventually..not in your hands ya know... Anyways, this song is quite a rocker..don't ask me to critique drums man! High energy tune, and the mix sounded fine to me pal.

Hey, max! greetings from your former city of residence!!! nice to hear some stuff from you again! I love the vocals and guitars on this. drums are well done. this is a great song all around. my only nit-pick is the bass is rumbling some and sounds like it might need to be rolled off a little more on the low end, at least at the beginning of the song, it seems to tame out a little after a while.

Its surprising how something like a robbery is still an intensely personal violation. I remember how I felt on those occasions when something had been stolen from me. Great lyrics. The song was very enjoyable. Cheers Shad

I like the song.....I was listening on the computer's speakers, and I thought the bass was rumbling too....but I thought it was my spkrs.....guess not...beagle heard it too. Altogether a good song and mix. I really love the technoligy that allows non drummers like us to create music with realistic sounding drums.

Superb job Max, this mix sounds fantastic. This guy is really good, his vocals remind me of the late Chris Whitley, very nice delivery style. Guitar solo is gut-wrenching! No crits from me, love it.

Thanks for all the responses! Thanks Rhyno, I did do another version with the durms louder. Yea that's me quite a few years back. We were headed out to be the warm up band for the "Guess Who" that weekend. Have to tell you a funny storey about it some time. Bill, thanks for listening. this one still need something, just don't know what. I tried to put the vocals back even with then band. It seems like he is still sticking out some. Thanks for catching that. Larry, I remember you talking about the guitars. Losses are part of life I guess. Thanks for listening. Beagle, I see you go to the Christian Song Writer's forums. How do I get there? It would be nice to look around a bit. I think I need an envelope on the bass to lower the volume till the song gets going a little. Thanks for listening. Shad, thanks for the comments. And thanks for listening. Finally got a mix with EZ. Drums took about 15min on this one. No way I could balance each one of them to the exact same levels of everything, just tried to get close. What are your preferences for these? BFD2 http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6592455&q=hi BFD2 remix (drums louder) http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6601414&q=hi EZ mix (15 min to convert the BFD drums to EZ-Nashville - man that was EZ!) http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=6196235&q=hi Any more ideas? Thanks again, Max Arwood

Guitar Hacker, thanks for the ears on the bass. This song was done with a hollow body "acoustic" styled bass. It should have been done with a Fender PBass! That bass had no punch what so ever. Had to go through hoops to get it where it is. The best thing would be to redo it, but I 'm not sure we can. Just have to see how much time we can squeeze out on this CD! Max Arwood

James, thanks for listening. Still playing with the song a little. After I did the EZ-REmix, I'm liking it better. I guess BFD is so powerful, I can get a good set of drums all out of whack . Still got lots to learn about BFD2. I think I might like S2 more. Have to see when it comes out. I hope it is set up like EZ. I never liked the S1 interface. Rockyrose, thanks for listening. Robby, sure liked your new stuff. Hope you keep getting inspired! These recording are for my friend Brian Sherwood. I met him through the last big project I did. They hired him to lay down a few guitar tracks. Nice gun collection hum......... nah. They will get what they deserve in the end anyway. Hey Tom! Thanks for listening. I though I like the drums too. Till I did a version with EZ-Nashville. The BFD too about 4 hours, the EZ took about 15 min. Still don't know what I'm doing with DBF2. It sure has some bells and whistles, just got to figure it out. No How - Thanks for listening. I wish that was me singing. That's my friend Brian. I'm trying to help him do a CD. Got a couple of songs finished so far. Max Arwood

I like the whole thing, music, production, lyrics, vocals and really like the tasty guitar lead - what distortion effects did you use? The song is well done and catchy. I also liked "Guide Me Home" as well. You've got a great sound. I'm with you, "I know the truth" Great to know we are secure.

Thanks Max. The 'synth' is actually a patch on my Zoom 505II, pedal. It's one of those pretty worthless patches for guitar, but it worked for what I was looking for that song.

Troy thanks for listening. Nice guitar tone on "Last Breath" VERY good! You should try to duplicate this tone in some of the other songs!!! And that Easter Sunday is really nice. Is that you one the piano? Mark, thanks for the comments! I'm going to try to do 1 song each week or 2. Till I finish this CD. I usually try to mix all the songs and fix something on each song till they are ok (notice I did not say finished - I know better than that!). Trying this a little different. I hope I can make the songs match when I get finished. That is the only thing I worry about doing it this way. That photo of my keyboards is really old!!! I have a K200 and a Motif now. I can do more on either of those than that whole stack, well.... except the MS-20 it was kinda special. But, who wants to spend the the whole 15min break between sets turning knobs and moving patch cords just to get 1 new sound for the next set? Max Arwood

Max, I think the BFD2 has more "balls" and also I noticed the acoustic sits differently in that mix than in the EZ mix. I prefer this one for the whole sound, not just the drums. EZ mix is also more mellow of a mix (which is fine if that's what you're after) Great tune!

Great overall sound - everything's nice and clear, top to bottom. I agree the bass sound is unusual, but it doesn't detract and really I think it adds something extra for my ears to hang on to. If I had to offer any criticism it would be that the bass and guitar tracks are pushing ahead of the drums a lot of the time so the groove isn't as settled as it could be. The drums have a nice pocket and the guitar/bass tracks are up on the front edge of the beat which did distract me. I haven't used AudioSnap but it might be interesting to experiment with, if that's the right tool for this situation.

Hi Max, sorry to hear about your store getting robbed , some lowlife vandalized my moto a few weeks after my last song post ..... getting back to feeling the love for people has been hard ..... seems the fella in Dante's basement will attack to keep us honest and try our faith to see if we will stumble it's has been one of those "one set of footprints in the sand" type of few months for me regarding the song , I have to say you are one tallented musician / producer , you always post some real top notch songs and mixes... Brian is a fortunate musician to have you in his corner this song is so well writen and performed , and I love the feel and meter of the vox in the verse gtrs also sound fantastic I listened to all three versions of the song....each seem so different in subtle ways as mentioned before a few places had some dueling hight frequencys with the cymbals and high end .... tough call on what adjustments ..you will need to make ..... you are soo close to being there ..... it would take me a few hundred more listens to be able to give you any thing that would resemble intelegent constructive feedback .... I'm just glad to have had this opportunity to have chatted with you Max Kenny
