New To Sonar 8.5

On top of getting new software, I haven't done music for 3 years.  So, I am so rusty.
(don't ever stop, it's hell getting started again).  I just wasn't inspired.  But someone from England found my music and asked me to do some backgrounds, and I started getting into it.  So, hope that continues.

On top of the rustiness, we had a crash awhile back and I had to get a new computer with Windows 7, hence updating to Sonar 8.5.  First I have a really dumb question.  I just can't remember.  In the meters showing your levels, I know clipping is when you hit the top and the light stays on.  But to have a nice hot signal, do you kinda what to stay in the orange (or is it red, whatever) area right under the clipped signal light?  Or should you only occasionally be in that range and mostly stay right under it?

I loved my Waves Bundle that I had.  But it's too old to work in the new system.  Is there a maximizer like Waves L1 and is it as good?   Also, the Renassiance Compressor was very nice.  Again, does Sonar 8.5 have a good substitute?  Are there people here who still opt to use Waves with Sonar 8.5?  I wonder how the newer Waves are.  I sure liked it years ago.  I think it was Waves Gold Bundle 3, so it was pretty old.

Anyway, if  you could answer clipping question, and maximizer and compressor questions that would be awesom.  You would not believe how much you forget after 3 years.

Peace and thanks,
Janet Murphy

Record your audio at a bit depth of 24-bit and sampling rate of 44.1 and then when you record audio tracks, keep the levels at around -12 dB (but they can vary). That will give you a good recording and leave you plenty of headroom when it comes time to mix.

SONAR has a number of fx included. There's the Boost 11 plug-in for maximizing and there are a number of different compressors.

    Thank you, Scott!

Anyone else want to compare the Waves fx to Sonar 8.5

The Producer version has a lot of nice fx (and soft synths).  Cake have their own 64 series - a percussion strip, a vocal strip, linear Eq and multi-band comp.  There is also a channel strip, which is a rebaged golden channel from the now defunk Kjearhous (sp).  All these are good, tho I don't know about being up to Waves quality - which I've heard in session but not used on my own.  I usually just use the Sonitus channel stuff - not a lot of character but it works.

However, I'm very happy w/ Voxengo stuff.  It works and sounds good.  At least give it a demo - esp. the Marquis comp and the Elephant limiter.  Those are outstanding, along w/ the curve EQ.  And if you like it is relatively cheap - unlike Waves, who also want you to re-up every year.

And like Scott sez, you don't need to red line - or even orange line your recordings.  Use 24 bits and the 64 bit mix engine and you should be good to go.

Get your waves plugin up to date. The REN Comp and the L2 is not replaceable in my opinion

The vintage channel "is" really good it has it's own sound, bit like sonalksis it sounds(probably due to being a 64 bit processor, but waves are the best, like the man sais record at 24 bit, you get 6db of head room for every bit of audio, so at 24 bit, you get 144db of head room, -12dbfs  like the man said, that give you 20db spl head room, do the maths lol

No there is nothing like Waves L1 or the Renaissance built into Sonar. You can upgrade your waves bundle and it should work fine. You could opt for a UAD2 card and you can get the precision limiter and the suite of their compressors. They do rival if not exceed the Waves plugins.
