New To This Forum

Hi All,
This is the first time I've been to the "Songs" forum and after reading some of the posts, it seems like a great place to be. Anyway, I've been a drummer/guitarist/keyboardist for most of my career and only recently stated singing lead vocals. My voice isn't the best but I would love to read some constructive criticism and/or positive feedback regarding the following song I've put up here. I'd like to get a general opinion before I let a lot of people hear some of this stuff.

Thanks in advance!
Born Before

I enjoyed the song. The gtr work is very well done. I think the vocals show promise.

Overall, it seems to me the mix is somewhat dark or muffled. I don't know if you have too much of one effect or what, but brightening the mix would work for me.

Look forward to more of your work.

Thanks, Jeff. I agree with you about the mix. It's not finalized yet in that regard, but I appreciate your comments. I guess what I want to know, especially since I'm a beginning vocalist, is are the vocals annoying? From an objective listener's standpoint, what negative qualities about the vocal performance do you think I should be aware of? What was your immediate impression of the performance, if you can remember? Sorry to ask all of these in depth questions, but I'm trying to find my "voice" so to speak as a beginning singer and I'd like to get just a bit more feedback.

Thanks again, man. I really appreciate it.

    Sincerely,
    TuTwelve

Ok. Since I am more of a listener and a gtr player than a sound engineer I can help on that.

I enjoyed the vocals. I thought you sounded good. Much better than me! There were some points were you went slightly off key in the chorus parts, and towards the end one could tell you were stretching the voice.

Your voice has a good texture (I'm listening again), and good softness. It reminds me of someone like Crowded House or Michael Penn and other "smart" songwriters.

I would cut the amount of "born before"'s in the chorus or add a deeper meaning (born before what?, or scat something after saying "born before" once or twice at the most.

But, as I said, I think there is much promise in your performance. With some training (even if it is just looking online for vocal exercises) you can polish up those spots.

    Jeff.

Thanks, Jeff. That additional info helps a lot. It's difficult to get good critiques from objective listeners who are musicians.

    Much appreciated,

    Hi TuTwelve!

I like the song a lot! Especially the guitar is great, I've had this classical guitar in my room's corner for a long time, but still haven't learned to play it :) I love guitars though, and it's alway fun to listen someone playing them well.

The vocals sound good to me too. You have a good voice and you know how to use it, also.

    Good job!

    great guitar work!

I give you a lot of credit. You say you recently started singing lead vocals. Most people in this sittuation bury the vocals in effects and hide them in the mix. You mix is very clean and your vocals are right on the mark.

    cool track!
