New Tonight Show mic, what is it ?
Jay has a new mic on his desk for the Tonight Show. It looks like a Shure KSM313 with a custom color grille (not red). Can anyone confirm what it is ? Here is the best link I could find.. http://www.nbc.com/the-to...os/gallery#item=117520

Definitely a ribbon mic of some kind - my other thought would be an sE2000 or sE2200. I always wonder though - why do they have desk mics when everyone is mic'd with a laveliere mic? When Glenn Beck was on CNN/HLN he had a custom Blue mic (twas a Blue Bottle with either a gold or silver case), Larry King has one of those old RCA big ribbon mics and they are never used because you never see a mic cable running from them (and there's no wireles module hung off the xlr).

My guess is it's for looks and a backup or "room" mic to make everything sound more natural. A ribbon would be perfect since it picks up from both sides. There is some history here also, Johnny Carson used a Shure 300 series ribbon mic on that show for many years, kinda cool that Shure has a ribbon mic again and there is one back on the tonight show desk. I think the old Tonight Show mic was a SM 330 like this one... http://www.coutant.org/sm33/index.html Ooops ! Looks like it might have been an SM33... check this out. http://mixonline.com/news...Shure-Auction-0427054/

It's just a prop.. made by Disney.... Actually, it looks like an Audio Technica.

any chance there is an actual close up? I looked at your link and it's all so small... I have long believed that Jay's desk mic is used on occasions... I think there must be many occasions where a lav mic may have extra clothing noise or other tech issues. I've also assumed that there were several full on sound stage boom cranes that were just out of frame for the sit down discussions. It seems like someone here must have been at one of the shows at some point in their travels... anyone?

Jay only uses the Lav.... Johnny used the SM33 as mentioned above.

Fifty grand for a 40-year-old ribbon mic! With 40-year-old spit! That new one sure looks like an AT. However, given that previous Tonight Show mics (including the lavelier mics) have mostly been Shure products (55S, SM33, KSM32, KSM27), it would seem likely that the new one is, too. My guess is it's one of the new ribbons from Shure, probably the KSM353.

The KSM353 it larger and looks different (split ring at top edge), and it can't be an AT because the grille portion of an AT is lager and covers almost half the mic body. The one Jay uses has a smaller grille and looks almost exactly like the KSM313 except for the color. It even has the textured ring around the bottom. I can't find any other mic case that looks like it. I wonder if it was a KSM313 prototype or if the crew maybe painted the grille and shell to give it a "TV" finish and keep it from standing out too much in the shot.

Most of the talk-show mics have been customized. Carson's was especially built for him and carried a personalized inscription put there by Shure. Leno also used a Neumann at one time, and it had a black matte finish that I'd not seen on any Neumann product until just recently. My guess is the manufacturers are only too happy to customize a mic for such a high-profile application. The mystery to me is that those desk mics typically are not even used for audio, just as a prop and maybe an emergency backup. I doubt they're live - maybe powered but turned down - because there could be phase issues with the lavalier mics. So why bother updating them at all? My guess is they are product placements.

I think it's for the talk show "look" many of us old folks are used to. Yes, it is a prop or maybe a backup in case the lav and or boom fail. The "mic on a desk" is a standard format for talk shows. Leno tried the "no desk" look and it really didn't work. Folks just want to see that setup for some reason.

Bit: If you notice those desk mics are not hooked up - there's no cable out the back end of these things. Now I never went to see a talk show taped but I did make it to a few tapings of game shows back in the early 70's to the NBC studios in NYC and in additional to any mic a host had there was also overhead boom mics onstage. Was never able to get in to see Carson taped because there was never any empty seats - you really had to know somebody to get tickets and even at that it was months in advance - that's how popular he was, particularly when he came back from visiting the West Coast. Anybody remember when Carson used to be based out of NYC with only making occasional trips to Burbank? It was only later on that he moved permanently out there.

I already said it was a prop... that's pretty obvious to even a casual observer like me, but then I'm not writing a thesis on it like ohhey!

I guess it is just a prop. I'd still like to know what it is. I have this thing about unidentified mics...

I have assumed that the lack of obvious XLR cable on the desk was associated with the fact that many upper end mics don't have XLR connections but rather hard wiring... which can come out from a variety of places.

All modern mics have an XLR and these does seem to be a cable connected in the photo. They may have a hole in the desk and a way to route the cable through the stand and into that hole to make it look neat.
