New UAD2 software update - Warning for old UAD1 users.

Looks like UA was feeling pressure from Waves CLA 1176 package. They updated their 1176 plugin to include 3 of the models from the past including the bluestripe. Just checked them out and the bluestripe is amazing. Version 6.2 is out, go get it.

UNLESS YOU ARE A UAD1 USER OR A MIXED UAD2 AND UAD1 USER...THEN DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS SOFTWARE UNLESS YOU ARE READY TO HAVE YOUR UAD1 HARDWARE DISABLED.

THERE IS A GENEROUS TRADE IN PROGRAM BUT ONCE YOU DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS UPGRADE YOUR UAD1 WILL NO LONGER FUNCTION.

Just a word to the wise.

Good add. I just sold my two UAD1 cards last week. If I have know the promo was coming I would have traded them in.

Looks like all you get is $200 towards a UAD-2 (per UAD-1 traded in).

Hope Middleman got $201 each for his.

Well, not exactly. $150 and $135 for PCIe and PCI versions. I'm good moving away from plugins and going to hardware right now. I will keep the UAD2 solo just to stay in the game.

I jumped on the trade-in deal yesterday. Traded my two UAD-1 PCI cards in for a Quad Flexi pack. On top of the $400 trade-in, the local Sam Ash had one in stock for $150 cheaper than any place I saw online. I'm pretty happy with the deal, but now I have something that will run all of the new, expensive DSP hogging plug-ins that UAD is releasing these days. Was itching to spend my $500 voucher, but waiting for a good deal. When the new 1176 was released today I made the mistake of demoing it for about a half hour. I already had 1176LN, so at least it only got me for $149. Now I'm trying to wait for another sale before I blow the rest of my voucher money. No more demoing the plugs until they go on sale... then I can get hooked and buy with less guilt.

They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing.

I've got one UAD-1 left and am trading it for a Solo. That will give me a Quad and a Solo. I'm trading with Sweetwater and I have to send the Trade in voucher AND the actual card to them to make the deal happen.

I've got one UAD-1 left and am trading it for a Solo.

I now have a compelling reason to finally ditch my last remaining UAD-1e card once and for all! I had a (4) UAD-1 card system back in the day (2008), but quickly sold (3) of the cards on ebay soon after the UAD-2 was released when I got my QUAD. I sold the three cards separately and actually made $750 total on ebay. Used those funds to offset the cost of the new QUAD card. Made out like a bandit! I kept my last UAD-1 card installed for those times when I needed extra DSP, but I rarely used it. In fact, it has been years since I have even needed to use it for anything.

These cards are typically going for $80-$100 on ebay, so UA giving me $200 is a no-brainer. I'll trade up my last UAD-1e for a UAD-2 SOLO (about $140 after trade-in) and turn around and sell it on ebay and more than double my money! I'll use those proceeds to pay towards the forthcoming Thunderbolt card for my brand new Apollo!

As for the new 1176 Limiter Collection, I have been wanting UA to update some
of their older plug-ins for years. They always seemed disinterested in the past. So this has taken me totally by surprise. I am hoping that UA updates several other plug-ins as well (LA-2A, Pultec, Fairchild, LA-3A). I suppose they may wait until they see how successful these are, before they take the time and investment to go back and do other plug-ins.

These new plug-ins do sound awesome and very hardware like (with modeled transformers, FET and bipolar transistor amplifiers, input/output distortion, etc.). I really like the choice of the three modeled 1176's as well. I am really digging UA 's own "AE" version with it's hot rod mods (2:1 ratio & "SLO" attack modes) I'll be getting these for sure. I can't wait to hear how these babies sound tracking live through my Apollo QUAD once it arrives (currently on backorder)!

    Cheers,

    Billy Buck

I'm afraid AM soooo 20th century AND sooooo unwise!! But, this trade in seems like a good deal....and glad I saw this Fred before trying to update. The trade in deal is good until June, so I'll keep on the lookout for any additional discounts these othere retailers might have.
I was even thinking of selling my UAD1e, but it looks like I'm going to get sucked in to the UAD scheme and start this all over again.......deja vu!!

I just checked the instance chart at UAD support to see how many instances of the new 1176 UAD2 plugins a card will run.  WOW.  These new plugins are hogs.

I'm happy with my LN which just as well as I'm running a Solo.

The UAD1 trade in @ $200 a pop looks fair enough if you've owned one for a few years too, that's good to see.

The new install seems much better now without the reboot required as on earlier versions the update seemed really smooth.

Now all we need is the 64 bit update...YAY!!!

They are CPU hogs but they sound stellar. I would suggest printing the track once you get it dialed in, archive the original pre compression track and move along.

I am glad to hear the new 1176 plugins sound steller.  What supprised me was that the newly released 1176 Rev A will run only 8 instances of mono and 6 of stereo on a Solo card; whereas the previous 1176 version (that comes stock with the UAD2 cards) will run 22 mono instances and 20 stereo on a Solo.  This is a major drain on that DSP and the number of UAD plugins one can run.  This means that not much else can run simultaneously, but the trick will be to freeze or print a track once it is dialed in, and then free up the UAD DSP to do other tasks.

Freeing up resources by freezing has never been a turn off to me since I still remember when I started recording only having a limited number of compressors, period.   And freezing gives you plenty of room to make a change if you need to come back to it.

Yup...it is my ol humble opinion that all succeeding UAD2 plugs will be "CPU" or card hoggers which, while possibly offering much more accurate modeling, will also demand that everyone buy more and bigger cards to run them.  Not saying I'm giving up on UAD...but ol FabFilter has the right idea and, at least in my estimation, "has their mind right".

Yup, I couldn't agree more with that sentiment, it's those types of vendors that will rise to the top by getting past the short term goals to make a quick return and actually looking at what's required and supplying it with that right mind.

Also if it's good now it's still gonna be good in 5 years time and the use I get out of what I currently have ain't gonna diminish.

What comes next therefore has to be stellar and it can only get better from here on out because I'm already good to go.

Ghengis - Get the Studer A800. Thank me later.

Yeah, that one is on my list, but I'm gonna try to wait for a sale price.... even though I've got enough left on the voucher.
You like that one better than the other tape sim?

And of course I've been reading about the Fatso, so really it's more or less between those 3 at this point.  Must wait and see what comes up on sale in the next month or two.  I hate paying full price for UAD plugins, so I'm always looking for a bargain.
