Thanks, Jay... I beat me to it.

This is huge news.  I can't believe it is the first audio interface with thunderbolt and from UA, not to mention the processors inside.

I am glad I put off upgrading my system.  Now that thunderbolt is on the seeable horizon, my dream studio is happening sooner than I could hope.

    Huuuuuuuggggeee...........

    Kind regards,

It appears it will only work with Macs and PC's with Windows 7. I have XP, so I'd have to upgrade my operating system. I've already contacted Jim Roseberry and he will be upgrading my computer for me. Apparently, Apollo will not work with certain Firewire 800 cards either.

I just played with one at NAMM. If you are a UAD user this is the DAW interface to have. It allows you to track with plugins inline prior to DA conversion. Similar to Protools. Under $2k with 8 AD/DA capability according to the UA person I spoke with. This will give the Lynx Aurora a run for their money.

This box will be perfect for my needs. I come from the camp of always processing with outboard gear on the way in. I finally joined the DAW world about 5 years ago. Now it is just a fun hobby for me. Now I'll have to try and sell my RME FF400.

I've been in contact with Adam at UA and he confirmed for me that the hardware itself is exactly the same for use with a Mac or PC. The only difference being the driver that is used. I was going to pre-order an Apollo Duo and just wait for the PC Driver to be released, however, Adam advised against this, stating that there is no definite release date for the PC Driver, and development delays could cause quite a delay. So, I'll just wait for the PC Driver's release, and then see just how stable they are.

    Looks very promising!

Would be nice if all Audio Interface manufactures move in this direction (provide built-in effects suite). So far Roland Quad Capture and a few other brands do to some extent of course nowhere near compared to what the Apollo provides, I think this baby could kick some serious butt :)

    What I'm not so clear about the Apollo is the actual flexibility of the FX routing for example;

    (1) Reverb for record monitoring only - the FX does not get printed to SONAR. (2) Whilst the Limiter gets recorded to SONAR. This is just an example setup of (1) and (2) being done 'simultaneously'. I have no idea if the Apollo can do this.

    Just downloaded the manuals now!

    A couple of big IFs.

If they have an RME or Motu sound quality, then this will fall more into an expensive home quality category product. I think what people are hoping for, because of UAs past with their 2192 converter, is that this will be on par with that device's sound or even at par with something like the Lynx Aurora. If they match either one of those two, which will be challenging given the price point, this will be the THE unit to have. If you want this just for the tracking capability, that is valid, but plugin tracking capability with average converter quality would not be compelling for me to pay the $1700 street price.

The other big IF is the ASIO driver implementation which might make it challenging to jump up and down about the product while your waiting for the glitches to be worked out.

I'll check in this summer to see if this matches up to the excitement. I'm hoping they pull this off in a big way, they usually do.

I gave this some big thought Middleman. I've been wanting an RME Fireface UFX and the RME floor guy at NAMM said they were going up in price by $200 (MAP).

But since I already have two UAD Quads in my system, I just ordered the RME Fireface UFX from MF for 15% off with one year payoff, no interest charge. It's just like I saved $500.

It's a tough call. If the reviews are strong after this has been compared to other boxes, I might sell my Lynx and UAD cards and upgrade to the Apollo. If they are so so, I'm fine where I am.

It reminds me of the TCK 48 - basically the same i/o config.  It will be interesting to see how good the conversion is.  I was wondering if they were going to come up w/ something along the lines of the 2192;  I guess not at the price point.  I guess they figure they don't need "color" going in w/ the plugs.  And clean is cheaper to do.

Still, it should be a good box if you need a new convertor and the UA cards.  makes it enticing to many.
