New User - Quick Question

I have midi files of songs that I wrote using a VERY old version of Cake.  I bought X1 so that I can get better sounds (VST) than I'm getting from my old synthesizer.  That's all I want to do at the moment, but I don't even know where to start!  (I've checked but this software is FAR from user friendly).

Can anyone tell me how to insert a midi file and go to where the VST sounds are?  I'm only looking for general midi sounds at the moment to simplify things.  I'm going stark raving nuts here!

THANKS!

Open up your Instruments menu in the Browser and then drag and drop in whatever synths you want into the project. From there you can move the MIDI clips to those new tracks, or route the existing tracks with your MIDI on them to those synths from the track's I/O module which will be either in the Track itself, the Console, or the Inspector.

I always recommend new users do the tutorials found by opening the program and pressing F1. This opens the Help window. Make sure that you select the Contents Tab and you'll see that there are 9 tutorials.

I'm not fobbing you off. Its just that you're in the situation where you need to know some stuff to ask questions and you need to know stuff to understand the answers.

Tutorial 4 is the one you're after as it explains how to use software instruments that is DXi or VSTi plugins.

As far as inserting MIDI files you can just drag and drop the file from its location into a MIDI track in SONAR.
All the best.

Thanks for your reply. I think the problem is how X1 was set up.  I don't see synth sounds in the browser except for LE and also a tab that takes you to a page online.

I don't know if calling  tech support would help so I shelved X1 for a while.

Thanks

Thanks for your answer.  I received it tonight so I'm only six months late in getting it. ;-)

I did this exact same thing with some old Sonar 2.2 files.  Opened them in X1, inserted soft synths, and dragged the MIDI notes.  Tip: Hold down Shift and Control while dragging and you will make a copy of the MIDI data that is in exactly the same place time-wise: the Shift key keeps you from dragging a few beats or ticks off.

One thing I forgot to mention that could be important:

When I drag MIDI notes from an old track to a soft synth (virtual instrument), I always select the track (or range) and then go to Edit | Select by Filter and select only the notes (or only the notes and pitch wheel).

Reason:  The patch messages in the old MIDI track could cause unexpected results in the new track.  Also, some controllers (like volume) should be OK, but others may have new meanings to the soft synth.  For example, Controller 1 can be vibrato to one synth and brightness to another.  Even volume may give you different results since the curve may be different and the instrument may play at a different level overall.  The patch messages will always need to be eliminated.  The controllers are more of a problem for synth sounds than for organic things like piano or bass.

Didn't mean to make this harder, but didn't want you to get frustrated.  You can always quickly add the controller messages you want later and make them appropriate in levels to the new sound.
