Kev999 .
Drum maps are great when you've got them, but creating them is a pain.
it would be nice if they imported or converted SFZ 's etc... as for drum maps.. here is a fair few for various things>>

http://www.harmoniccycle....13-drum_maps_SONAR.htm

they took a LONG time to do.. I have more done for the emu proteus pack , BUT not for ALL of them.. I was hoping others who had the packs would trade me 1 for 1.. as I've done about errm 50+ prolly .. but no one seems to keen on the idea..  (I don't mind making maps , just the emu pack is a LOT of maps)

anyways.. drum maps are handy for 2 things really..
1) only notes that are ACTUALLY being used are shown + they give meaningful names (i.e. in the step sequencer etc).. after a while c#1 isn't the same as "snare" etc.hehe

2)you can change keys...i.e. say 1 kit has a kick at 36 and another at 48.. you can re-route the output to input a 36.. BUT input a 48.. hopefully that makes sense..

a little OT with regard to Blades..

Not only is he awesome giving these tutorials but he is an excellent drummer and a VERY good singer.
He plays drums and sings on a Queen tune we did about 4 years ago and it blew everybody away!
Click "My tunes at the bottom of this post and find "Seven seas of Rhye" and you'll hear him.

Hope you don't mind this blades.

Just thought I would share this info...as you were

O, darn... That idea of remapping keys (so I can play out of range notes on my keyboard) is really great, but it won't work with 8.5.1 due to the midi input echo bug... Bummer... Anyone knows when the next patch will be released?

EDIT:

guess what? i've run into something else i don't quite understand. ever since i switched to drum maps. my battery 3 plays all my drums. but i can no longer activated some of them with my midi keyboard. which i don't understand. the midi learn funciton in my battery 3 doesn't detect the presence of my midi keyboard either. only on some of the notes already used by other drums.

is there a limit on how many channels you have in your drum map or something? idk. i'm stumped.

Must be that bug I just talked about... As soon as you enable a drum map in 8.5.1 you won't be able to play the drums with the keyboard anymore...

Actually, i think my problem is something different. i'm still only using 8.3.1.

my keyboard plays a certain range, but doesn't play the whole range. i'm totally perplexed by this.

in battery 3 i can play the sounds by clicking on them, so my routing seems to be ok. but only some of the drums i can't play with my midi keyboard. the other ones are fine.

it worked for me fine before as well, before i installed my drum maps.

idk, i'm going to go and investigate further and see if i can find some kind of reason for this.

another thing that's really strange is that when i press said keys i can see the response in my meters in my tracks pane but, if i try to click midi learn on my battery for the pads i want to map to those keys it just doesn't register.

i'll try reloading my drums in battery and see if anything changes.

Personally, I think Drum Maps are great.

They enable you to be able to Solo/Mute each drum, see the velocity in a nice tail view and use friendly names. For my eyes, the note data looks more like drum 'hits' too.
Drum maps are great when you've got them, but creating them is a pain.

ya, it would almost just be easier if they just let you input text fields within piano roll, and switch your midi input data notes to how it is in drum maps and how it is in regular piano roll.

imo the more stuff stays the same, the less views you have, the better. drum maps and piano roll are so similar, they could just be one and the same but with a few added features to combine some useful stuff from both.

maybe for electric drum kits it might be a little different though, but still i don't really see why you'd need something completely different. the piano notes wouldn't make sense anymore but you can keep them there with text fields within them, and allow the ability to save the way you named them.

because naming as you go along is one thing. spending a bunch of time setting stuff up is something completely different. idk, i might be missing something but it seems like something simple is made more complicated than it needs to be.

all music software is this way though. for some reason they like to make drums and other instruments different but it's not that different apart from the way sustain is handled and the relevancy of the piano keyboard.

I think i found the problem, still not really sure.

i had made a drum map using the drums i had already recorded in a midi track.  then i went on further into my timeline where it was blank and recorded more midi on my drum instrument to input the rest of the kit that i had not yet used.

it didn't let me do that, and gave me the problem i had.

when i went to make a new drum map and just played all the notes where my drum isntruments should be all in a row, that worked out and they all mapped and i could play them all again.

a little weird. not sure exactly what was wrong there, but i got it in the end.

can't you add more drums as you go along?

what if i want to ad a new drum in my battery 3 kit at some point, can't i add it to my drum map?

this seems like a requisite for me to get used to drum maps i think. because if i can't do that, then really, i can only make my drum map at the end of the tune i'm making, which kind of defeats the purpose. unless of course i'm using a real electronic drumkit.

i think this is really the only thing drum maps are really intended for.

or i could have been doing something very wrong i guess.
