New Users With Old Software

Lately there has been a slew of folks looking for help in the MC and SHS forums. They are self-professed "new users" with software that's 6, 8, even 10-years old.
I try not to be cynical and I help if I can, but at the same time I'm thinking 'don't turn your back on this guy or he'll slit your throat and steal your wallet'.
I know it's possible that they got the software when it was new and never used it until now; maybe they had an actual life and had no time for the DAW box.
Any tips on how to best accuse them of using cracked/second-hand software without initiating a flame war and/or getting sent to my room by the mods?

I've never understood the thinking why if somebody was using pirated software they'd be using anything less than the latest and greatest version of the flag-ship product.

Maybe that's just naivety on my part.

Whatever, if somebody is pleasant, sincere and personable enough I never think it my place to judge and tend to take folk on face value.

From my experience the harshest of sentences ultimately comes from my own conscience anyway.

Really it's down to the vendors responsibility to safeguard their products from theft not mine, although like any good citizen I will report a crime if I can see without doubt that one is occurring, or indeed if there seems to be a trend of suspicious activity.

You could mention your suspicions to those that ought to be interested and leave it at that.

These type of things can occur if say there is a job lot of old keyboards, sound cards or some such that come with bundled software that is being legitimately outed cheaply somewhere.

I don't think they're using 'cracked' versions of MC or SHS.
I mean why would you when you could just as easily download Sonar Producer 8.5 or probably even X1 by now?

Now maybe one of their friends gave them one of the older versions to 'get their feet wet' so to speak.
I'm ok with that and would have no problems helping them learn the program.
Chances are that they will soon out grow it and since they will be familiar and comfortable with Cakewalk and our little helpful community, they will probably purchase the newer Cakewalk product.

I agree with Jon, I wouldn't make any assumptions, I  mixed mud for several years with Guitar Tracks 2.0 before I discovered the forum. I've seen a lot of older software being sold new and in the box on eBay, last year I picked up an old version of Guitar Tracks new and in the box called Guitar Studio, it was the first fully MIDI capable GT product, before Sonar I think. Pretty useless compared to Sonar, but I was curious. I'm a sucker for old software, I still play a few DOS games on occasion.

    Then again maybe not.
Once they log onto these forums and see how much this damn form software sucks they'll probably run to another software provider.
How good can a software company be if they cant even get their forums working?

It ought to equip you with the knowledge of some tattered old end of life products finally entering the distribution channels for peanuts too.

Not that I would imply that Walmart would try to offload such things...

I've noticed that there are some people on Craigs list that sell the older versions of Cakewalk software fairly cheap. I even saw a really inexpensive copy of Sonar Producer 8.5 going for peanuts with the registration code, yet they will tell you that the software is already registered.  I still believe in innocence before proven guilty.

They could just be cheap too... like me... when I finally decided to buy a Vista lappy, I tried to install and run my old CWP8 Deluxe software... after all, I paid over $350 for it. It was the Sonar/X1 of it's day... and I was really disappointed that it didn't work.... so I shelled out $35 for an MC4 download....

I still have the old CWP8 software... just in case I ever build a Win95 machine......

I got into the DAW thing a number of years back when I bought a new-in-box, never-registered copy of Project 5 v.1 on eBay.  One thing led to another... and here I am in the CH getting nothing done (and enjoying it!). I'm glad that person never got around to using the software - I discovered a whole new world of music production, as up to that point I'd only used Audition 1.5 with no midi, synths, etc.

when I see someone with old cracked software and they are asking for help you bet I assume they don't have a legit copy.

In this case I tell them I can be more helpful to them if I had there phone number and would they mind we chat on the phone.

Then when I get them on the phone I go postal. I yell as loud as I can and say......

"Listen you little Mother Fu****** I paid $600 in 2005 for an new interface and sonar IV. Then I upgraded every year to whatever that cost is ....WHAT!!...... about 130 a year. Not to mention 3rd party software I've bought as well as books and videos on how to learn to do this myself. I have thousands of dollars and thousands of hours of time invested in an art that I love and you want this Sh__ for free. FU__ Y__ and the horse you rode in on!!! You HAD BETTER GO RIGHT NOW AND BUY A LEGIT COPY BEFORE I FU****** bash your skull through the wall and report your happy ass to cakewalk and the UN!!! You little Pr** Mother #^#%@#&*#!!!!"

Then I slam the phone down.... wipe the droop from my face pop my eye balls back into my head.

    perfectly legit response IMHO
