New Wavlore Pedal Steel tutorials and 50% sale
I just saw over on the NI forums that Wavelore have put up some more tutorials for their pedal steel Kontakt instrument. http://www.wavelore.com/wlps_videos.shtml I got it way back when it was on sale to rase money for a charatable cause. I use it occasionaly for alternative lead guitar type sound rather than trying fully emulate a pedal steel. Hopefully these videos will help me get deeper into it.

I just listened to some of the tutorial videos.....I don't think the pedal steel sound is that convincing.....when they sampled this, who was the steel player?

really??? I think it is a lovely sounding steel. Horses for courses I guess. One suggestion - the tutorial videos are intended to show techniques, not show off the instrument. If you are looking for a virtual pedal steel you might want to go back and listen to some of the demos.

Being a Pedal Steel Guitar player, I haven't heard anything that will take the place of the real thing. Band in a Box has some pedal steel tracks, that were done by Nashville "A Team" (recording team) Pedal Steel Guitar player Paul Franklin. They are nice but only to insert one of his small licks and nothing else. They are no good for an intro, break or outro. The only thing I hear on those demos is typical no pedals to the A&B pedals down lick - e.g. going from a I to an IV chord. There is more to pedal steel than just that one type of lick. I tracked Pedal Steel for a studio in New Zealand last year. They were trying to get some pedal steel into a song and nothing they tried satisfied them. I sent them a "real" Pedal Steel track and they were elated.

I think fireberd's experience is interesting - I wonder if it's the sort of thing that's largely noticeable only to pedal steel players, though. I'm NOT one, and thought the Wavelore stuff sounded great. BTW, my favorite Paul Franklin stuff (not that I've heard all that much) is his contribution on Dire Straits' "On the night" live record from the 90s...just amazing playing IMO.

As a pedal steeler of 30 years, I agree wholeheartedly with fireberd. It's an instrument that can't be faked. Part of the reason is, with a pedal steel you can pick a three note triad and move one of the notes up while moving a different one down using pedals. And also, the tone cannot be replicated. Oh, and you must be willing to sacrifice your soul to learn how to play it correctly. No steel player is better than a bad steel player...

That's exactly what's bugging me about this program......the tone doesn't impress me and I'm not hearing the "pedal" slides and bends....I also have the Paul Franklin tracks from BIAB and it seems to be more efficient just getting a steel player to play on my tunes.
