New X1 Draw Tool Limitations?

Hello all,

Before coming off like a needless complainer -- or filing a feature request -- I want to confirm my understanding that in Sonar X1, the PIANO ROLL DRAW TOOL has the following limitations:

- It is impossible to draw note values smaller than a 32nd note triplet
- It is impossible to draw note values of arbitrary tick duration (vs. rhythmic values)
- It is impossible to use the eyedropper to pick up durations as well as velocities
- It is impossible to draw "unquantized" without holding down a modifier key
- It is impossible to have draw durations/quantization "Follow Snap"

Can anyone get me around any of these limits?

I don't have X1 in front of me, but my recollection is that the snap grid goes to resolutions as low as 1/128th triplet notes. You can set the PRV resolution to follow snap grid settings (PRV -> grid resolution -> follow snap settings)...i would imagine that would work (though i've never gone below 1/32nd triplet notes myself).

Use the default shortcut key 'F12' to deactivate the snap grid, and then you can drop notes into the PRV where ever you want. You can set durations manually by using the smart key to pull highlighted notes to the required length.

I've tested the above suggestions this morning and, yes, if you select a resolution directly from the PRV, you cannot go lower than 32nd notes.

But as mentioned, go into PRV -> View -> Grid Resolution, and select 'Follow Snap Settings.' Then, in the control bar Snap Module, you can select a resolution as low as 128th-triplet notes, and this resolution is what you will end up with in the PRV.

I have't learned how to draw note durations other than the settings offered in the control bar Tools Module 'Event Draw Duration' setting...but turn off the snap grid, and you you can 'pull' PRV notes to length using the Smart Tool -- it's not a great solution, but it works, and you can lasso multiple notes to change all the durations at once.

FWIW with a combination of default and custom key bindings, it's possible to do all these things -- select grid resolutions and note durations, etc -- using shortcut keys, which really speeds things up, compared to using a mouse and menus.

It's worth looking at X1 -> Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts to see what's already there, and then making some custom keybindings for other settings, i.e. the default Sonar key bindings let you set note durations using CTRL+SHIFT+1-4,6,8. In my personal key bindings file, i've assigned SHIFT+1-8 to my most commonly used snap grid resolutions.
