New X3 clip behavior - Quick help please

All,
 
I've been using Sonar since 1.0 XL, so I'm pretty familiar. I just started using X3 (from x2) and something odd is happening.
 
When I snip an audio clip (alt+click), instead of splitting the clip and doing nothing more, nothing less, the cli that I snip is becoming gray and I can no longer make another snip unless I first shift+click the clip (which turns it back to it's normal colors).
 
Is this intended behavior? It's slowing down my editing like crazy. I'm using the smart tool, like I always have.
 
I can upload a video if that would help explain the issue.

    Okay... I narrowed it down some more. Whenever I alt+click snip a clip, it's changing the focus to my Kontakt automation... ugh... what?
     
    Weird... I went to my contact automation track and shift clicked it to get off the focus of the automation lane and now snipping my completely unrelated audio track (guitars) works exactly as it has for years.  Go figure.
