New XLR microphone making "wind" noise during silence...any ideas?
Hey guys, so I got the following package recently and appreciate your advice when I made my decision!  But my microphone is making a weird "wind" type sound during silent parts when I do not speak into the microphone. It is an XLR microphone and it is called the MLX 550. You can hear a sample of my problem here: soundcloud.com/ryan-thomas-music/microphone-noise Any ideas why that would be doing that? I have no fan on in my room, no air conditioning is on and there is no wind blowing yet it sounds like there is wind blowing into the microphone. I also have a pop filter installed to make sure it is not picking up any plosives or breathing. The XLR microphone is plugged into the external audio interface Focusrite 2i4, which in turn is plugged into my computer via a USB 2.0 cable. Any ideas on the problem? Thanks for your help.

Are these noises registering on your meter? It almost sounds like interference of some sort. Maybe a shoddy cable.

I used MXL mic's when I first started. They all tended to emphasize the high frequencies. I dumped them in favor of better mic's.
Because of the high frequency emphasis, or the gain you have set, as noted its probably picking up some noise such as the PC noise. Try to isolate the mix in a quiet area and see what happens.

That really does sound like you're outside on a windy day.
To me there's too much bass for it to be just a matter of picking up sounds in the room. The high frequency hiss maybe, but that low stuff sounds like you have you mic under an air conditioning vent.

So it's not interference but noise? Have you tried different XLR cables? Did you try a different microphone? If it's not that, then it sounds like you may need to return or exchange it. That sounds like more than just a noise floor.

Sorry I didn't see the soundcloud link the first time. Yeah, sounds like air is moving accross it, as Paull suggest, rather than a fan as I did.
Is it connected to a laptop or a PC, if the former, have you tried another room. If that fixes it, and there is no air vent in problematic room, it' probably worth getting it exorcised.

I don't suppose you have the gain up really high and are picking up the sound of your breath. That happened to me once. A little tweaking and a wind screen and I was good to go.

I am on my phone so cannot navigate well. I have a large diameter MXL condenser mic and it cannot be used without a wind screen (popper stopper). It is so sensitive that I have to stand like a statue to use it. I did not listen to the link, but if your MXL is similar to mine, I can see it picking up your breath easily (especially with no wind screen and if you get closer than 6" to it).

I have an MXL that turned out to be a dud. Noisy and distorted too. But- it might not be the mike- Scarllets 2i2 and 2i4 are bus powered and many people have reported noisy systems. That sound could very well be system noise, It's more like a static to me than wind. A bad cable that you are moving? Question- does it happen if you move the mouse around or change anything video related. There are a few threads reporting this and all are scarlett users. Even on gearslutz. I have a 6i6 and I now get a very similar static sound when I move my mouse. I did not get this on other systems. The 6i6 in not buss powered but it's seems to be a USB/ video system issue. The recommendation given is to try a ferrite USB cable. In my case it might even be inside the computer. USB systems are not shielded and it should not matter for digital, but who knows.

I finally got to a computer and the first part of that sounds like it might be breathing (since it pauses), but the end part is too long and consistent to be breath, but it definitely sounds like air flow across the mic (or possibly a bad connection).
Do you get the same issue with the other mic in that package (i.e. just swapping one mic for the other)? This would help you better pinpoint the cause between the diaphragm picking up something (it goes away), or an issue with the signal path (it is still there).

Condenser mics pick up everything. It's probably just low-level room noise. A gate/expander plugin will take care of this if it's undesirable.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but I’m getting very similar sounds from my Peavey 6505 tube guitar amp...it’s plugged into a power conditioner and same thing with two different guitars.
Did you ever diagnose and/fix the problem?

The usual answer.....bad cable or ground issue. It doesn't have to be the Mike or audio input itself, it may be a diff cable connected in the same overall system.
In one example I had a bad HDMI cable conn to one component that gave the same issue or hum, and when I disconnected that cable my entire audio set up lost its extra hum...
