New Year, New song....a dISTANT tOWER

First off Happy New Year to all. I hope you all enjoyed the holidays.

Ok. so what do have we here....? Proof that despite what I was always told when growing up, those that ask sometimes do get !

Back story......I wanted to write a love song that was a l'il bit different - bit unexpected, bit quirky and decided upon a title as a nod to the talents of the forum masters of the unexpected.  Anyhoo, I got so far and thought...mmmm not different enough. What would really make it different ? I know.....yeah that's it.......nah he'll never go for it. But he did. And here it is.......

a dISTANT tOWER

Huuuuuuge  thanks to Tom for his work on this. He wrote the lyric and did the vocals 'cept for a lil' bit of me warbling away here and there. Everything else is my fault. ;)

All comments, good or bad, welcome

I like this kind of 'quirky'!!

I hope I'm not to far off track here, but, I hear a 'New Wave' style on this tune. It's the guitar and synth tracks IMO.

I like how the vocals does that drifting downwards part on the end of some of those verses. Very creative.

I gave this a few listens and each time it grew on me.

     Upbeat tune and very refreshing!

Hey Paulo, Tom- Excellent effort here.  I think I'd be saying exactly what Larry said, but he already said it and I don't want to just go +1.  Some of those synth textures that kinda' sneak up on you are really cool.  Vocals are great.  I really enjoyed this.

Scotty - thanks for the ears ad the nice comments. Your name cam up ina conversation I had with Janet recently and we both think it's about time you picked up your guitar again and give us a treat.

Larry - thanks for the listen. I'm glad you had more than one as I think this is definitely a grower amd not necessarily one that catches you first time round.  Wasn't really going for any particular style, other than a bit quirky and upbeat, but I see where you are coming from.

PhilZ - Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. I was going for a shouldn't really work but somehow does kind of thing with the synths, well actually, the whole song was based on that idea. I''m glad you enjoyed it. That makes.........er 1,2, 3, 4... 5 of us so far !

    Hi Paulo,

Cool tune, man.  I personally would have liked to hear more of that sitar-like thingy you use in the intro but that's just my 'always overdo a good thing' philosophy

One of the things I like about it ( and there are lots of things to like ) is that every time I think I know where the melody/chord progression is going...it takes an unexpected turn.

    Very well done.

Yeeee-ikes! Be careful what you ask for. There are so many great guitarists on this board that you don't need to hear my hacking.

Scott?  Are you kidding?  You're one of my favorite guitarists.  Yes, there are several great ones around here, but I still love it when you play the guitar.  :-)

Paul, this is cool!  It's great when collabs work out this well.  :-)

Wow...this brings 'the Jam' to mind.  (Great band)
Fine job all around.  Great harmonies and nice fat power chords (..and all kinds of artsy contrasts peppered throughout).

Had a great time working with Paul on this very neat tune. I very much enjoyed the poppy feel of Pauls tune right out the gate and he's always has a great feel and loads of textures in his tunes....Now if I can just drag him over to the dark-side and have him jump in on a DT tune....

Thanks for having me aboard Paul and thanks for the listen and comments!

Geeare - thanks for the listen and comments - unexpected turns was part of what I intended here, so I'm glad it's catching a few people that way - one reason why the sitar-type sound doesn't make a comeback - there was more in there originally but I dropped it. I'm glad you liked it anyway.

Clifford - thanks for your ears. Yeah, it was fun. Tom is a great guy to work with and so very creative.

Janet - thanks for commenting - cool is good. I'm happy with that :)

BIAB Dude - wow! Quite a speech from you there, lol ;) Thanks for listening and commenting. Glad you liked it.

NoHow - Glad you caught this one as I though it would appeal to you - a little something of the gents about it I thought.

Tom- pleasure was all mine fella - thanks for going with my daft idea and making it work so well. Hopefully I'll join you on the dark side one day !

this is refreshing to listen to - poppy but not pop, tuneful but not hackneyed...yes some 80s vibes but also summer and driving...mix is excellent, nice and open, bright but not heavy on the highs. nice!

Thanks for listening and commenting - poppy but not pop is exactly what I was aiming for with this and Tom was kind enough to trust me with his forum cred and go with it, so top marks to him for that.

I enjoyed listening to this number and got the same feel that Rick did.  It reminded me a bit of the Jam.  A really nice piece of work.  The surpises of the melody and progressions really made this a fun piece to listen to.
    Well done!!!

thanks for the listen and comments Freddy. I'm glad that you enjoyed the little twists and the fun factor as that was exactly the aim with this song. I think the best  twist was having Tom sing a song like this and I'm so glad he agreed.

Awesome lush psychedelia in this, too (IIRC, and/or to my ears) ... a mighty pleasure to listen to the hearts, vibes, backings, and fun going on here.

The words rhythmically charge and make this musicality a GAS!

I thought I had commented on this a few weeks ago.

This is quite an interesting style mash-up...as if Crash Test Dummies got produced by Max Martin.

The break at 2:30 is genius. Did not see that coming (though it does sound vaguely familiar!).

This has definite early ZAPPA vibe, especially the vocals.

I'm listening on my crappy work speakers, so I'm not sure if it needs a little more bottom, or whether it's just me.

I got such a strong Zappa vibe I kept waiting for the band to break out into some kind of weird 7/13 beat bridge or something.

    Catchy too.

Philip - thanks for the ears and comments - I can see from your various posts that you listen carefully to things, which is always a compliment in itself to me. Glad you enjoyed it. It does have a fun feel for a kind of sad song, but that's just one of the twists that I really like about it.

Jamesyoyo - thanks for listening and commenting. I guess whoever that Dumb Bum character is must have copied me somehow ! ;) Perhaps he's one of the forum lurkers !

Daryl - thanks for yout time comments. I'm not really familiar with much FZ, so if it's there then it's accidental. I'd be interested to hear if you think the same of the mix if you get a chance to listen on decent speakers.

Vechung - thanks for listening and commenting. There are some unusual instrument choices here- I'm glad that you think that it somehow works too as that what I set out to do.

Tap - Extra cool huh ? I'll take that - thank you. Tom's vocals really give this it's identity - I was kind of stalling on the whole thing until he stepped in. I don't think there's any intention to be Zappa-esque, but he seems to be regarded as cool in his own way, so that's ok too I guess.
