New build. Opinions?

I need a new computer.
Is this IT?
See anything wrong?

Not sure about video card (I have 2 monitors). I just picked this one sort of at random.
Ram ? is the right kind?
SSD?  Is the SSD overkill. I know Scott and Jim don't like them, but, for like $120 more than a disc drive......?
I can wait for windows to boot, but will Sonar and associated files load faster?
I'm just tired of waiting for everything.

Is 'true Image' a good Imaging software?

Thanks for any and all advice.

Vertex 3 is twice as fast. Sonar boots in less than 4 seconds (not loading vsts) . Sonar pulls up orchestra piece with 4 vsts's 80 lines all with envelopes in 5 seconds. Windows boots in 14-15 seconds. I think vertex 2 was more than double that.

I think 8g memory will be fine. You could go for 2000 but probably little difference. I have one puter with 1600, another with 1333 and notice no difference at all (except price).

How is it cooled? (Maybe I missed that)

    HI Timidi,

you need a good cooler the stock cooler from intel is not good enough for the 2600 even @ stock speeds
Noctua would be my choice also noctua case fans

SSD? thats up to you you will gain nothing from it as far as audio maybe a little from having dim pro installed there but you wont notice much.
Acronis true image is good stuff we prefer Paragon
looks like that ram has funky timings could not find it on kingstons site?
but guessing 9-9-9-27.. really should be 9-9-9-24
    hopefully it will work

I would have picked the same chip if I were buiding a PC right now. IMO Intel chipsets are the way to go on the MOBO.
The vid card only offers one of each type of output. You could get a card with dual HDMI out on it to feed both monitors.
I'm not sure I agree that the stock cpu cooler is inadequate for the i7 but to protect a substantial investment  for a few more bucks, why not?
Gamers are not as concerned about how quiet a fan or a case is but most of us are,so if I were to do it again I would buy based on how quiet these were.

    Thanks guys.

I ditched the SSD. (at least for now:)

So I put this cpu cooler in my cart:
    is this OK?

           Noctua NH-U9B SE2 92mm SSO CPU Cooler

scott, I see what you mean about the timings. I looked at a bunch of the other Kingston sticks and they all refer to 27 and not 24. The blurb speaks of the SB 2600k though. I guess it is Newegg's own brand from Kingston.
    Got a better idea?

Starise Thanks. Ok, so pick me a video card. What is "HDMI"?  I'm clueless...

    Also,
    I noticed the MB has:
    2 xSATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (gray) by P67
2 xSATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (navy blue) by Marvell 9120

I chose the 6.0Gbs 64 meg cache drives simply because I figured more (gps and cache) was better. I don't know what it means though.

Anyway, I've read something about the Marvel controller being funky.
So, needing 3 drives, should I replace one of the '6.0gps and 64 cache' drives with a 3gbs drive (for C:\) because there are 4 3gbs slots? Sure seems like a lot of slots on this board. I count 15? That can't be right ???

    What is "HDMI"?
It's now the standard connection for TVs and settop boxes, having replaced SCART.

So, why would I want that for a computer video card?

You probably don't, but some users need to connect their computer to a large plasma screen or a projector for use in demonstrations or PowerPoint presentations.

I built an i5 last year.... video card was an after thought. I didn't realize the MB didn't have video on it until I was ready to hook things up.

I went to the store and bought a $12 video card. It works well.  The clerk said "Dude, you want a better card than that for games"  I said "No. I;m not a gamer"   ...strange look of confusion from the clerk...

It works great and has 2 outputs for a dual monitor setup. I use one currently. I might consider a dual upgrade... but where to set the second one?

My only thought on a video card is that I want fanless, and be able to hook up at least 2 monitors.
    $12 would be nice.

Could someone say, "Hey Tim, here's a good one......... (newegg link)

dont worry about which sata ports the sata 600 are no faster than sata 300 other than the very newest SSD drives.
i would probably stay off the marvel

buy a fanless ati 5450 dont worry about what connections most have 1 vga, 1 DVI and 1 HDMI the HDMI can be converted to DVI

Both of my Acer monitors had HDMI. They also had VGA. I decided to go with a card that had those connects on it for dual monitors.Maybe you don't need them to be the same.  Who knows, you may want to add that 50" monitor to your rig someday;)

$12.00 man who is building this stuff so cheap? It probably cost the vendor $6.00. I bought a geoforce board for around 60.00 but it was a few steps up from bottom end.

I am building my new one right now....!!  I mounted all the components last night and tonight I am going to wire.....

I have two suggestions .... 1 really think about that ram you picked......really think about it...

    2. on your data drives.....for $60 ($4 dollars cheaper than what you picked) you could upgrade to a Samsung 1 TB same 7200 speed....more storage...

    Just my 2 cents

On your RAM choices.....find your moBo and then find the approved vendor list which will have all the choices for RAM that will work with your board listed.....this way it helps you pick RAM That is known to work....Follow suggestions by Scott and Jim.....I do not believe they will send you astray....

    but do the comparison....it helps

you would be shocked at how they (manufacturers) actually test, their QA is a joke.
for that matter the ram manufacturers are not much better
no one and i mean no one tests with a ful house (all slots filled)
lucky if they test with more than a single stick
i have had to send numerous motherboards to Mushkin (for keeps) just so i could get the XMP profiles and Eeprom tatoo's i wanted and to make them test with a full boat.
at least they are willing, same for Super Talent at least i dont have to send them boards....

    Question:
Can I use the 3.0gbs controller for one of my 6.0 gbs WD drives?

I'm curious as to whether there are any considerable differences between the ASUS MB versions, e.i. LE, Standard, & Pro as it applies to a DAW.  MicroCenter has an LE version for only $94.

I made a close comparison of the ASUS P67 boards before choosing the P8P67Pro. The only difference between the standard and the pro version is the LAN chipset; the pro version has the Intel chipset, the others have Realtek. I doubt that for the LAN chipset will make much difference for DAW work, and fwiw, my new build with the Intel LAN mat actually be a little slower than my eight year-old Dell P4. If I recall correctly, the LE version has fewer PCI / PCIe slots, and they share more resources between them than the more expensive boards. The pro version has USB 3.0 capabilities, but I'm not sure about the others; I'm pretty sure the LE version has no USB 3.0. My advice is to get a 3.1 ASUS board if you can, they don't update them for no reason. My new build is rock solid so far with the exception of a bad motherboard right out of the box.
