I think the padding at the bottom of posts and between quotes  is a bit large... and it isn't helping the over all "too much real estate" problem.  But I *could* upload a new avatar today!  That's something...  :)

Hi Jack,

jackn2mpu

Forum down for almost 2 days for this? What a crock. Too much wasted vertical space with duplicate info (change page thingy for example). Not to mention all the white - have to turn down the brightness on my monitor (and there goes the calibration for when I do Photoshop).

Sorry to hear you hate our forum so much  In the coming days we will be improving some of this.  RE: the delayed outage, behind the scenes was a pretty massive change that took longer than anticipated and the size of our forum (1.5 million+ posts, 54,000 + users also contributed).  Hopefully if you can bear with us through a little growing pain you'll like it.

And what's this whole supermember/superuser thing about anyway? Where does one see this?

It's fixed now

Best,

I hope it works out, but right now it's giving me a headache to even look at it. I used to like hanging out here but until things get fixed that's not going to happen. I dropped another forum I used to hang out in (for model trains) when they changed the whole look and feel and made it visually difficult to work with. It'd be a shame for that to happen here because I really like the community and being able to help people.

Well generally I can adopt easily to forums' looks no matter how drastically they change....but can anyone PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE make it so that a user can search also for new THREADS since last visit and NOT only posts? Its such a basic function to see what went on in the forums while you werent here and clicking the "posts since last visit" or even "today's posts" returns ALL single posts in every thread which is sometimes NOT the user's goal.By finding a NEW thread you re gonna read all the new posts in there anyways.

I can't figure out why it's just big enough that I have to scroll a little right to catch the whole page...is there an option to fix this somewhere. ...

What I've noted (using Firefox 3.0.11) is that the horizontal scroll bar is there no matter how large you make the window.
But typically there is nothing to see if you scroll it.  The text seems to wrap itself as you make the window smaller up to a certain point.  If you make the window width too small the text just start running off the right side of the window.

Same for me with Firefox but I get a little chopped off with IE8

Susan, thank you.  :-)

I also miss being able to click on someone's profile (to check their name or something) while I'm writing a post.  If I do, my post is gone.  Hopefully that will be remedied before long too!

I admire what they're doing... clearly a major forum software upgrade, moving from ASP to ASP.NET technology.

But I can't get over the Vista-style transparent popup windows! I'm running Ubuntu/Gnome/Firefox here, and it just looks so crappy to have "me too!" vista visual UI bulls**t on my screen.

...Sorry, I really hate the direction Microsoft's UI has gone in recent years.

One problem I find is that the "in reply to xxxxx" no longer seems to be appended to a reply when you click on reply to message. Makes following the thread much more difficult when there are interposed replies.

Re:New forum look... 2009/07/22 20:17:16 (permalink)
First of all, the new look is not very sophisticated.  The color scheme is not appealing, but it does have a clean look.  It's a pretty big change for the CW homepage to forums.  Next, I noticed that the last poster and date of last post in the far right column is gone. (It's there, guess it takes a little while for all columns to show up or I just didn't have my window wide enough.)  But the most unappealing is that the columns do not contract or expand with the window resizing.  I guess these have been mentioned, but that's my gripe.

I am for a light color scheme, but this is too simple... actually is pretty generic.  The Message Options are cool (which includes the post number, I may have missed that in the old forum).  Also the reply/post options/tools in message window are cool, e.g., ability to attach files to message, paragraph formatting, superscript and subscript, even spell check!   The other good thing that I have noticed in this new format is the CJ has a new 'avatar'.  That is probably the most welcome change.  (Can't say much for my own, but then again, I rarely post).

Kind regards,

tecknot

julibee Look!  Seriously... waaay too much padding under my sig!!! ^

The avatar's are 30% too big... not that we don't enjoy looking at your face, Juliana... the picture's are just too damn big.

As far as padding under the sig... How ironic is it that we have these fancy flyouts and dropdowns, but the mostly useless "personal stats" text block chunkity chunk is sitting, statically, under the avatar? You know, the one where everyone puts in something cutesy for the "Location" field?

Helloooo? How 'bout we make that a mouseover on the avavtar or combine with the dropdown over the user name? That right there is contributing to wasted real estate, except for those that have oversized... um... sigs.

While we're in **** mode, the posting mechanism sucks. OK, so I'm on IE6, so sue me... but as far as I can tell you have two options -- a.) a floating div "window" (which essentially makes the post window modal) or b.) a full screen job, where you TOTALLY lose the context of the thread. What's wrong with an actual browser child window like the old system? Don't have to deal with modality there, and the user is free to navigate wherever they please without having to "synch" the post with the main thread window... totally independent...

Oh... and the color scheme... it's not terrible, but everything blends into the next... Light blue icons blending into light grey backgrounds blending into light blue links... So I look in my user options, and there's currently one option: the "Classic" theme. Oh, it's "classic" alright!

I still see those here. Firefox 3.0.12.

EDIT: Actually, the "Last Update" column is wider than it used to be.

Another strange thing I'm seeing here is that posts I get via e-mail are all truncated. I used to be able to see the complete posts in my subscribed threads.

-Susan

Maybe you emailed short posts. Long posts always were truncated with a link to the thread under the old system.

No, not here. I have lots of long posts that I've kept, and I never had a post truncated before the forum revamp.

BTW, I'm talking about using the e-mail notification of a reply in the User options. I always got the full message before.

I'm not getting a message at all if I forward something, just the link and #body# in the "body" of the message. So both of these features have changed and no longer work correctly.

It's useful (or at least used to be!) if you come across a helpful post. You can just forward it to your address instead of copying/pasting. I have a couple filters in my email client so those were sent automatically to relevant folders when received.

What do you think of the new look.....

and.... it looks like no more "color" ratings ....we're all SUPER MEMBERS to boot.

It's interesting, I have a "INVISIONFREE" message base myself on my website, but nobody ever uses it because I ain't on the google list yet.  Maybe soon, maybe someday. I've got other things to work on long before that day "IF" it ever happens.

I like it honestly, a few more options, and as ALWAYS best of all "IT'S FREE".....

I can't complain about one thing and that's "Even with a Google search, and even using my former bookmarks" it would give me the error 404, it wasn't until I went to the Cakewalk products site and then selected FORUMS that it would let me access the forums. I thought they were gone/down/I was banned for something.... I didn't know. I would say "I wish they would fix that" but I'm on here now and don't wan't to go back.

I think they should send out a message to all users of the forum letting them know that "The forums are up and here is the new link".

Does this new format mean we get more then 3 PM's?
And is there still an option for changing the color of the text?

EDIT: Just checked. There's a new limit of 25 for the PM's.
